James Arthur "Jim" McGrath

James McGrath Obituary

A lifelong and well-known resident of Whitman was struck by a motor vehicle Wednesday and died that morning from injuries he sustained. He was the husband of Margaret (Mosher) McGrath, with whom he shared 21 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Kathleen and Gregory. Jim was very involved and supportive of his children's community, educational and athletic endeavors. Jim was pre-deceased by his oldest son, Benjamin and his parents, Eleanor and Thomas McGrath. Surviving family members, sisters Ellen Vogel and her husband Jay of Bridgewater, Mary Lou Kelly and her husband Jim of South Yarmouth, Beth McGrath of Scituate and Jeanne Engel and her husband Steve of Johnson, Vermont. He is also survived by his brother "TL" and his wife Deborah of Boston. He is also survived by his in-laws, Faith and Tom Mosher of Hanson, Steven and Renee Mosher of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Jonathan and Sallie Mosher of Whitman. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Jim McGrath and his brother-in-law, Jimmy Kelly had continued the family business, the T.L. McGrath Company, a Whitman institution, for many years. Jim, an indefatigable entrepreneur, also founded Suburban Service Center and Whitman Equipment. A 1978 graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School, Jim was well known to all the sisters at the school. An avid sailor, he enjoyed life most when he was on the sea. He and his family spent five years sailing up and down the East Coast in their ketch "Sable", wintering over in the Caribbean. He also enjoyed competitive sail racing on weekends. Jim was also involved in Troop 22 Boy Scouts, the planning committee for Old Colony railroad service through Whitman, and member of the founding committee for Christmas Lights in Whitman. His ever present smile, and easy going attitude helped him make many friends, and he will be missed by everyone he knew and touched during the course of his life. His services will be held Monday, July 7 at 10:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St., (Route 58 at the rotary), WHITMAN, followed by a Mass celebrating his life, at 11 am in the Holy Ghost Church, School Street, Whitman. Visiting hours are Sunday, July 6 from 3 PM to 7 PM. Memorial donations can be sent to the Children's Floating Hospital, Pediatric/Oncology Clinic, 800 Washington St., Boston, MA 02111, or donations may be made to an educational fund for the McGrath children and sent to: Jim McGrath Family Fund at the Mutual Bank, 570 Washington St., Whitman, MA 02382. Dear McGrath Family,
I was saddened to hear of the tragedy that took Jim much to early. He was a class ahead of me at Spellman and in reading all the articles surrounding his death, it is apparent that the same lovable Jim from High School grew into a remarkable person with all the same qualities that made him so special and unforgettable in school. I can truly relate to the comments made about him in the papers. As I read about his death in complete denial, it soon became apparent that this was definately the "Big Jim" I knew from Spellman just by all the descriptions of him. This is definately is legacy. My heart goes out to his wife and children. I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers for a very long time.

To the entire McGrath Family,

I would like to send our deepest sympathies to your family. Jim was a wonderful man & I will never forget him. He was a customer of ours when we owned Franklin Small Engines in Brockton. He always made me smile even when things got rough in business & we were forced to close a 3rd Generation business. He took the time to sit & talk with me, trying to come up with a soloution that would help us out in our best interests. He was a man who helped alot of people & will be missed by everyone who met him. He once fixed my old turntable & would not let me pay, he said I always helped him & really appreciated my help. May you find peace knowing what a wonderful person that Jim was & will always be.

Dearest Margaret and all the Family; So sorry I couldn't make it to the services to hug you, so this is the next-best thing. We are all in a state of shock at the loss of such an incredibly good human being in such a random and tragic way. Peggy, so you will always be to us (tho it annoys you), I called my brother Tom (Hooker) in NC and he was heartsick at the news. He and Julie, Dan and Kevin send their condolences and their love. My mom (Mary Lou Hill) also sends her love and prayers, to you and the kids and a special prayer for Mary Lou- Mom was one of her best customers at the Christmas shop. The Winterfest was my daughter Althea's favorite event of the year, and that's just a single page of Jim's legacy. Margaret, unfortunately I know how brave and strong you are in the face of tragic loss, but I don't understand why you had to be tested like this. I'm just thankful for the years you were able to cherish your life with Jim. I will never, ever forget when Ben was sick and you and Jim brought him down to Wyman's to choose his plants for his garden. Against all "advice", you chose life for Ben while he had it, and I was privileged to see him enjoying it. I know that your strength, faith, and that attitude will carry you through this unfathomable loss. I hope that the tears, thoughts, and prayers of myself, my family, and the whole community will help in some small way to lift and support you in such a terrible time. All our love, Ruthellen (Hooker) and John Lumkin, and Althea Tetrault.

Dear Margaret,
Aunt Janice and I have you and the kids in our prayers. It is sometimes hard to understand the ways of the Lord, but we can never give up. I learned a long time ago that God has a plan for our lives even when we don't want to accept the events that happen along the way. Hang in there, we love you.

Dear Margaret, Kathleen and Gregory,
Few have touched my heart as Jim did. He epitomized all that is good in our little town. No one could leave a chance meeting without an extra bounce in our step and a smile on our face. I am heartbroken for you.. and us all. He was a very special gift.
Please know you are being closely held in the thoughts and prayers by those who have been touched by Jim's gentle and joyfully spirit.
With love and sweet memories,

With shock, my prayers are with you as well as Margret and your children.
They are now denied the incredible love of this husband and father.
You are now, however, re-united with Ben so we take solice in that.
As Ben has been all these years, you will now be made a part of my daily prayers.
Save me a spot at Heaven's tavern. If I manage to make it there, I'll buy.
Rest in peace my friend.
