I just found out Steve died. I was so sorry to hear of your loss.
He was my friend. I've missed him.

I have known Steve as a member of Gretel and Peter’s family since I became a member of the family marrying Gretel’s sister Janell. Through the years I saw ‘Uncle’ Steve at many of the family holiday gatherings. He was always in high spirits – a pleasure to talk with. Janell was especially fond of Steve and through the years they shared many family stories and laughs together.
Since my daughter Sarah has been a grad student at Harvard, Steve has made it a point to invite her to the Harvard Club for lunch. She talked of those lunches often and felt special warmth for him. She is coming to the memorial service from the middle of a summer holiday to honor him.
Last November, I sent Steve a notice of a lecture on bobolinks at the Arnold Arboretum and he responded in a positive philosophical way:
Thanks for the heads-up. I corresponded with him the first year they were noticed trying to nest and cheered. I am so glad that apparently they have been successful and have some new site fidelity. From such small victories is peace and harmony achieved. Oh, would that it were so.
