Repost of Obituary
Kenneth R. Evans, 81, a former vice president of Microwave Associates of Burlington, and a longtime gentleman farmer in Carlisle, died Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer.
Kenneth R. Evans, 81, a former vice president of Microwave Associates of Burlington, and a longtime gentleman farmer in Carlisle, died Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer.
He was born in Chicago, Ill., and graduated from Ithaca High School in New York in 1945. As a teenager he built his own radio sets, earned his ham radio license, and worked from 1944 to 1949 as a radio communications technician for Mohawk Airlines in Ithaca.
After graduating high school, Mr. Evans immediately joined the U.S. Navy, where he became a seaman first class and served in both World War II and the Korean War. As a member of the Naval Reserve he attained the rank of aviation electronics technician, second class.
He was a dedicated Ferrari enthusiast and a very capable mechanic with the vehicles he collected. During the 1970s he joined two Carlisle friends to form KTR Engineering, a company dedicated to the restoration of exotic sports cars.
An avid sailor, Mr. Evans owned for many years a 32-foot Westsail on the Chesapeake and later at a slip on Narragansett Bay. He also owned a 44-foot CSY that he sailed on its maiden voyage from Tampa, Fla. to Marsh Harbor, Bahamas where it was put into charter.
Mr. Evans was also a talented classical guitarist and a member of the New England Classical Guitar Society.
In 1949, Mr. Evans married Jane Ogle of Ithaca, N.Y. He proceeded to earn a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1951 and a Master of Science in 1956. He initially worked for Varian Corporation in Palo Alto, Calif., where he entered the PhD program for Engineering at Stanford University.
Mr. Evans moved his family to Concord in 1961 when he began working for Microwave Associates, and settled six years later in Carlisle. Occupying an antique farmhouse in Carlisle, he established a small farm and by necessity learned to hay, rope beef cattle, hog tie pigs, and shear sheep.
A world traveler, he enjoyed trips with his wife to China, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt and the UK. After selling their 60-acre farm in Carlisle in 1995, Mr. Evans and his wife moved to Groton for six years before settling in West Newton and Palm Coast, Fla.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by six children, Marie Lane of Groton, Laura Evans of Newton, Scott Evans of Carlisle, Kari Evans of Newton, Stephen Evans of Westford, and Mia O'Connell of Ipswich; 13 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
A private family burial was held at Groton Cemetery.
For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Evans' memory may be made to American Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Mass. Chapter, 715 Albany St., C329, Boston, MA 02118.

Dear Evans family,
We were so sorry to hear about Uncle Ken's passing. Luckily we were able to see him at the Ogle family reunion in Boston even though we knew he was ill even then. He will be missed by all of us - our sympathies to the family.

My tribute to dad at his services 10/05/08.
Dad,
I’m gonna miss you. I’m gonna miss our long talks, even though they were on the way to your doctors appointments or in the Emergency room. Funny, I got to know your medical history better than I knew the rest of you.
Now that I reflect back, I see that you were quite a fascinating person. I can really appreciate the broad range of things you did that made you unique; from your inventions and your satellite communications skills to your love for sailing, classical guitar and antique Ferrari’s. I know if it weren’t for you and your hard work (and yes, long work hours) I wouldn’t have been so lucky to have shared some of these things with you. So I thank you for that. It’s something that can never be taken away.
Some of my favorite things we did together was when the family would pile into the station wagon and go to the fireworks, the beach, camping or drive around the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights. I liked hanging out in the garage at the ready to hand you the right wrench. It was fun to sit in the cockpit of the Westsail at anchor and relax over cocktails. I remember being wide-eyed with fascination as you’d guide me through the antique auto or air museum. Then of course, wrangling the sheep, pitching hay and picking ripe tomatoes, which we’d devour in a matter of minutes. But especially, I admire your intelligence, determination to overcome obstacles and your ability to keep a good sense of humor.
It was a sad day when you were diagnosed. All your life, you were rarely ever sick and then that devastating news. I wish I could’ve taken that day back. I never would have been able to cope the way you did, and still, trying to please others to the end. I thank you for the extra time that allowed us to be together because you had chosen to suffer rather than surrender.
I am glad your struggle is over now and you can rest. I’ll be visiting you often, and who knows, I may even bring you some fresh garden tomatoes with mayo and salt.
I’m gonna miss that silly Grinch grin of yours too. I can just picture it now; as you speed off ahead, the wind in your silver hair, “leaving us in the dust”.
This is how I will remember you. Goodbye for now and
Love you,
Kar’.
