Allan Rosenfield Obituary

ROSENFIELD, Allan G., M.D. Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health mourns the passing of their beloved friend, colleague, mentor, and Dean Emeritus, Dr. Allan Rosenfield. A world-renowned leader in public health, he brought his considerable intellect, passion, courage, and persistence to addressing the public health concerns of vulnerable populations around the globe. His 22 year tenure as Dean marked a period of unprecedented growth and recognition for the School. His pioneering work on women's reproductive health and human rights, innovative family planning studies, strategies to address the tragedy of maternal deaths in poor countries, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic had an impact on millions of lives globally. The Mailman School community extends their deepest sympathy to his wife Clare, son Paul and his wife Rachel, daughter Jill and her husband Marc Baker, brother Jim, his five grandchildren, and the entire family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Allan Rosenfield Fund, Mailman School of Public Health, 722 W. 168th St., 14th Fl, NY, NY 10032. Linda P. Fried, Dean

As a Dean and colleague to the faculty who worked with him, Allan Rosenfield was both inspiring and loved. Even those of us who moved on to other institutions were greeted like friends when we met Allan. His courage in the face of his illness was particularly moving. We will miss him.

The Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children is deeply saddened to lose a valued friend and colleague. Allan was a true champion of women and girls and called attention to the particular needs of populations displaced by war and natural disasters. He was at the forefront of efforts to advance reproductive health and human rights for women and girls worldwide.
