Gail Weinberg Obituary

With great sadness Dr. Weinberg's friends note her passing. Dr. Weinberg died in Cambridge{M1} August 10th, 2007 of cardiovascular illness and was laid to rest in the family plot on Long Island. Born in Brooklyn in 1937, she was the daughter of Abraham and Sylvia (Weinstock) Weinberg. Gail graduated from Scarsdale High School and Barnard College and later earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University's English Department. As an independent scholar, Dr. Weinberg became an acknowledged authority on the Pre-Raphaelites, publishing numerous articles in such important scholarly journals as the Burlington Magazine and curating a show at the Fogg Art Museum on the drawings of John Ruskin. She frequently lectured on art at various museums and conferences and for many years served as a docent at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. She was also a long-time member of the Boston Browning Society, serving for several years as its president. Her lectures and museum tours consistently drew an enthusiastic following. She was a woman of deep knowledge in a wide range of areas. She is remembered and held dear by a multitude of friends and acquaintances for her sparkling wit, her personal charm and her erudition. All will miss the pleasure of her company. A celebration of her life will be held on September 21st. For information on this event please call (617) 628-2371 or (781) 646-2727.

I only just caught up with this but want to say that Gail was an awesome friend, mentor, and voice of wisdom for me throughout our journey as Ph.D. students in English at Harvard. I remember her with great fondness for her compassion, unerring insight, tact, and kindness.

"Tiny woggle, soft and sweet," you are always remembered. [This was one of Gail's favorite phrases.]

Gail hired me to help organize her files in 1980 when I was a grad student at the Fogg. We became lifelong friends. Funny, wise, humane, tolerant - a lovely human being. Robert Baldwin (860) 739-7728
