Maureen and Jake,
My husband Dave and I want to express our heartfelt sympathy to you on the loss of someone who I understand was a wonderful husband and amazing father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both as well as the rest of your extended family. We didn't have the privilege of meeting Steve and count that as our loss as well. Please know that we send wishes for comfort and peace during this time of grief.
Sincerely,

Family and Strength
On Saturday afternoon May 31 I lay down to take a nap. The sun and warmth of the day had built up a level of Washington, DC humidity that could only signal one thing—the dog days of summer would soon be here. Nonetheless, I put my head down and closed my eyes and reviewed that all to familiar pre-sleep checklist of life's priority items beginning with thoughts of family and the daily dosage of strength our loved ones provide to us all.
My rest did not last long that afternoon. A thunderstorm came up quickly and rolled through my neighborhood in Washington and I remember stopping to note this exclamation point of nature which had punctuated an otherwise ordinary last day of May. Later that day, I fully understood the message of that afternoon's storm. From many miles away, my dear beloved brother-in-law Steven James was completing his own checklist of family and strength and was saying his goodbyes to me.

I used to drive Steve to school in High School. Those were good times at RCBHS. I'm absolutely shocked. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this very difficult time. May the good memories last forever.
Steve was a good friend.

I am a neighbor to your property on Whitehaven Road and had met Steve (and Jim) on occasion while the property was being cleared out. I am very sorry for your loss and will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Mrs. Athoe & Jacob
We live down the street from you on Stony Point (3568). I only knew Steve to say hi to him at school/town events and when he would walk the dog. I was always impressed at how he would be involved in the things that involved his son especially at the schools over the years. It was nice to see other fathers getting involved and interested in their kids. My daughter Natalie is the same age as Jacob and they ride the bus together. She is very upset at the news and has been praying for you and Jacob every nite since and even before Steve passed. I hope she can be a compassionate friend for your son in the days to come. If you find yourself needing anything from someone to keep an eye on Jacob or help around the house with something please consider us available to help at a moments notice. Though we have never met my family will make ourselves available. We will continue to pray for a peace that passes understanding for your family.
Best regards,
Tom, Linda, Natalie, Maggie Schultz

One the last times I spoke with Steve, I thanked him for the Fly fishing pole and kit he bought for me. We talked about how we would both learn how to fly fish, and then he would come to Virginia and see who was better at it. I am going to miss Steve for I knew he had a special place in his heart for me, and I had one for him.
