Leslie Johnston Obituary

Leslie Buckler "Bucky" Johnston, 52, died at home on Thursday, February 14, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A "Memorial Gathering" for family and friends will be held March 8, 2008, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Bucky was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on August 16, 1955, to Eleanor Forsyth Johnston and the late Dr. Eugene Rhodes Johnston.

Bucky loved the outdoors, hiking, camping, and riding motorcycles throughout his life. He earned a degree in agronomy from the University of Wyoming and worked as an historical gardener and grounds foreman at Monticello, Albemarle County Schools, and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Most recently he was the grounds manager at Tannenbaum Historic Park in Greensboro.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Francine Rexrode Johnston; three daughters, Ellie and Kaitlyn Johnston, and Meg Elise Troutman and Earl, of Lake Stevens, Washington; his mother, Eleanor Johnston of Birmingham, Alabama; three brothers, Rhodes Johnston of Cincinatti, Ohio, George Johnston of Birmingham, Alabama, and Hardee Johnston and Sarah, of Scottsville, Virginia; one sister, Jeanie Johnston of Fort Payne, Alabama; many nieces, nephews and in-laws; his cat, Pippin; and his faithful Jack Russell terrier, Dana.

Tim and I remember with fondness the several opportunities that we had to spend time together with Francine & Bucky and their children. Bucky was a great story teller, always a new story on the tip of his tongue. He was full of life and we are certain that he has left that gift for those who remember him well.

Whitney and I had the fortunate pleasure of knowing Bucky in Charlottesville VA. His joy in life, his knowledge, and so many experiences made him a great person to have as a work partner and friend. I enjoyed fishing the Fluvanna River and canoeing the James River with him. Our condolences and love go out to Francine, and to all of Bucky's children, relatives and loved ones.

My thoughts and prayers are with Buck's family and friends. I was honored to have had Buck in my life, though it was for a short time. And blessed with the gift he gave of our daughter, Meg Elise. To Meg, Francine, Kaitlyn, Ellie, and Bun my special thanks and prayers to you all. I'm so sorry he had to leave so soon, and grateful he has been released from illness and pain.
He was a good man.

Sincere sympathy to Bucky's girls and wife and his extended family members. Bucky was a talented and knowledgeable steward of the earth. He brought beauty and use to the Tannenbaum historical gardens. He graciously shared by educating adults and children about the plants in the gardens. Everyone who met him, including me, received more from him, than we ever gave back. I know that you are proud of his accomplishments. I feel honored to be among his acquaintenances and his student learning about the Tannenbaum garden. God be with you. -Gail Fleagle
