I spent the anniversary of Marys passing surrounded by family, and that was comforting. We looked at old pictures and talked about Mary, and somehow I got thru the weekend without too many tears. We all think about her every day and we all wish we had had more time with her . Unfortunately everyone gets so buisy with life and we all tend to think we will have time to get together later. Sometimes, there is no later. I only wish we had all made a better effort. Mary was a good soul and we all miss her. I do however, feel peace these days, knowing we will all see her again one day, and knowing shes in a perfect place. Now she can rest. She worked so hard all her life, and now she doesnt need to.

It has been a little more than a year since Mary's passing but rarely does a day go by that I don't think of her and what a terrible loss for so many people that knew and loved Mary for being such a very special lady!

Mark - Just wanted to let you know that Ashley and I are still thinking about you and the kids. Thoughts of Mare pop into my head everytime Corina wants us to read "Zoe's Goodbye".
I'll never forget the look on people's faces when they saw Mare's picture on the tshirt I wore for the Northshore Inline Marathon. It shows how many lives Mare touched.
Take care.

Mark,
This is Dawn (John's ex-girlfriend from a little ways back). I am so glad I ran into Nancy yesterday because I had heard some terrible news about the family and could not get ahold of Nancy (turns out she moved for a bit). I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Mary was truly a special person and I'm glad I got to meet both of you and be part of the family for a while. It was a special time in my life and I won't forget the Palm's and Mary and extended family. Your family is in my prayers. Take care.

To Mark, Kaija & Eli,
Merry Christmas from Duluth. I truly enjoy reading your inspirational messages. The children are in the best of hands with their loving Dad. You three are in my thoughts this holiday season. Dr. Mary left such beautiful memories and her ongoing love will help you through this blessed season. Enjoy the beauty of all the love that surrounds you.
Merry Christmas

It is the week before Christmas - although Halloween was Mare's "favorite" holiday due to the costumes, she was known to start the Christmas music in July at times. It is amazing to me how much I learned from her about the giving of the Christmas season. One of her favorite quotes was from Dr. Seuss "Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.". I hope that I can instill some of her wonderful giving ways in Kaija and Eli. Our tree is up and Christmas music is playing.
Happy Holidays and thanks again to everyone for all of the support.

I heard the horrific news only this morning. I am still in shock. I went to high school with Mary and since we were next to each other in the alphabet, we sat next to each other in nearly every class for all four years. We shared a lot of great laughs over that time. She was so warm-hearted, with a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. As is often the case in life, regrettably we lost touch and moved on our own life paths. I last saw her at the ten year reunion, smitten with baby pictures and we shared a big hug and bits of nostalgia. That was over seven long years ago. Mary, I will miss you very much for all the years to come. You were truly a remarkable spirit. Your legacy lives in your children forever.

Dear Mary,
We really missed you at Thanksgiving. When we were setting up our tree we found several ornaments you made for us. Little painted gingerbread men. It made me smile, but then it made me realize that Christmas will feel so different. I will be expecting to see you at mom and dads. I know you are with God, but all of us down here really loved you and miss you. Fly with the angels...Love Susan

I just found out about Mary's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
I had brought my Retriever Mix to her since he was a puppy (now he's 3)and was hoping that she would get to meet my new puppy, a Terrier Mix.
She was an amazing vet. You could see it in her eyes that she loved what she did and really cared about the animals.
She will be missed!!

Mare - Thank you, so much, for your friendship as we went through Veterinary School. You listened when I needed to talk and always knew what to say to bring a smile to my face. We had some fun times - the vet conference in Portland where you ran into the Pacific surf, making and selling photo bookmarks to raise money for the Holistic Veterinary Medicine Club which you founded, coming up with ways to save money in those lean times. Though many miles and even an ocean separated us over the years since then, we somehow managed to keep in touch. You always had such a love of life and the wonderful ability to live in the moment. As we went through vet school, your love of animals and compassion were so evident - I knew you would be a great vet. Though our letters may have been fewer in the recent years, the bond we forged years ago was deep. I will miss your letters and the pictures you would send. I've reread them since the news reached me and they still bring a smile to my face and joy to my heart. Thank you for the gift of your friendship and the beauty of your smile. I will always remember you with joy and love.

Halloween - oh how Mare loved to get dressed up for the occasion. The kids loved all of the excitement that she brought to the day and it just isn't the same without her. She was the guru of creating a great costume on the fly and was known for getting people that normally don't wear a costume to wear some pretty crazy things. What an original woman!

If only I could capture in writing a fraction of the emotion and grief our family has felt over these 2 months. I can’t begin to express how truly sorry we are Mark, Kaija, Eli and the rest of Mary’s family. A vibrant and wonderful person was taken away from you much too soon.
At book club this spring, one of our books led us to a discussion on choosing one word that best describes us. In her humble way, Mary could not come up with one. TALENTED was quickly decided as most fitting. We are all in awe of her many abilities.
Kaija, this summer, when you and Carina were having your picture taken at a photo booth, the two of you posed giving the peace sign. You said your mom always liked when you did this in photos. As your soccer coach, I had the great pleasure of celebrating your soccer goal the night before the accident with your parents. Your mom was so proud of you!
Eli, I continue to have an image of you tucked behind and hugging your mom’s leg each time I stopped at your house or you came to ours to pick up Kaija. So many times when Kaija was at dance, you and your mom went grocery shopping. You were always so excited to go and get the shopping cart shaped like a car. I know that those trips were just as much of a highlight of your mom’s Fridays as they were your’s.
Mark, Mary always had a bit more of a sparkle in her eye when you were around or if she spoke of you. When you two gave me a tour of the Vet Clinic, I couldn’t tell who was more excited: Mary, as she saw yet one more of her dreams coming true, or you, as you were building it for her. The reaction and compassion I have seen as a result of Mary’s death speaks volumes on who she was as a person and who the two of you were as a couple.

October 10th is the 2nd month of Mary's passing. For most of us, life has gone back to a basic routine but for Mark, Marys two children and other family members, like Marys mother Cathy and Marys father, George and her sieblings, life will never be routine again. Mary was such a wonderful, caring person, loved and respected by so many, its amazing how many lives she has touched in just 35 years. Mark and the children made her life complete. It is comforting to know that she was very happy with her life and that she accomplished so much in her short life that she wanted to do. As her aunt, I regret not getting to know her better and telling her how proud I am of her.
Blessing to Mark, children and all of Mary's family and friends.

Dear Mark,
You may or may not recall that you & Mary were married at St. Mike's the day after Jim & me. In fact, we shared flowers & church decorations to save a few bucks for all of us. Attending your wedding & reception was our first official engagement as husband and wife. I remember how nice your reception was out at Mary's parents' house. I don't think we've seen you since that day, though we've seen Nancy at church through the years, and I run into Tyler at school every day. I teach at Tyler's school. HE was the brave soul who decided to approach me in a crowded gym full of hundreds of noisy kids waiting for their buses, to ask me if I'd heard about Mary. I'm so sorry. I can not even imagine the pain & sorrow that fills your every moment. May God grant you the strength to smile through tear-filled moments of remembering Mary. Jim & I will keep you, your children, and all of Mary's family in our thoughts & prayers. She sounds as though she's a truly amazing woman to remember.

Today, Dick and I (along with Rocco, our Schnauzer) rode from Duluth to attend the Pancake Breakfast for Dr. Mary. Although it was raining and foggy, there was a beautiful and sunny atmosphere when we saw the line of people young and old, so many eating a great breakfast, sharing memories, and observing so many wonderful people pulling together to make the event such a huge success. Dick is a retired Duluth Firefighter and sure gleamed when he saw so many firefighters and volunteers working together and enjoying what they were doing. Even Rocco was wagging his tiny tail from the car as he saw so many people passing by. When I got home,I put my little Zoe keychain near my signed book and will take it along as I continue to read to young and old. We will never forget our wonderful Vet. It is such a pleasure to read about all that she accomplished in such a short life. Kaija and Eli, it is so difficult to lose a Mom at such a young age, but never forget her love and all that that special person did to make a difference in this world. Always remember... that when God takes a loved one away from us, he leaves the best part in our hearts. You had a wonderful Mother who is now watching you from above and you both will make her proud as you grow in your own lives. We keep you and your Dad in our daily prayers. Mark, we heard so many wonderful things about you today....what a wonderful family man and community servant. God Bless You!

We feel so blessed to have had Mark and Mary as our closest friends for the last several years. We have so many fun memories together. Mary was by far the most genuine, true friend a person could want. Always smiling and having fun and would be game for anything. Some of the best memories.......our trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico with Mark and Mary. They were in the "perfect couple" contest at our resort and won! They truly were the perfect couple. A trip of a life time! Mary is and will be sadly missed forever!

Mark, from what I've seen of you, the kids are blessed to have you. I know you'll carry on her memory for them and quide them the way she would have wanted.

As Mary's parents, what can we say? Mary was a joy to us throughout her entire life. She was always very thoughtful, generous, and kind. Mary made many friends and she treasured each friendship, with several of them lasting from her very young years in grammar school.
Mary left us with many wonderful memories. We thank God for the 35 years we were able to love Mary on this earthly journey and we will continue to love her in Mark, Kaija, and Eli, her precious family. Requiescat in pace, dulcis Maria. May you rejoice with the angels and the saints.

This last month I have had so many memories of Mare come to mind and I have so wanted to email her and say "remember when...". My heart broke when I got the call of the accident. Mare was such a wonderful person, I have been blessed to have her as my cousin. She was so full of energy and enthusiasm, as kids she was always thinking of some great game to play or adventure to take. She was quick to smile, quick to give encouragement, and quick to give of herself. She adored her family, Mark is such a wonderful guy- they made such a great pair, and her kids are so beautiful, they were so important to her. Mark, Kaija, Eli, I am so sorry for your loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

What can I say? Words seem so inadequate a way to describe an amazing person like Mare, a free spirit. Although I knew Mare for only 6 short years, she was the closest thing I have ever had to a sister. She was my movie-going buddy, shopping partner, photography pal, true friend and so much more. Most importantly she was a kindred spirit and one of my very best friends. We shared so many of the same interests and hobbies and had the same sort of hopscotch mentality when pursuing them; bouncing from one to the next trying to learn and do everything. Mare's enthusiasm and creativity were constantly inspiring . She was the kind of person everyone wanted to be around. Mare's spirit lives on in the many beautiful things she created during her life. And in her children; the mischievous glint in Kaija's eyes, the way Eli crinkles his nose when he laughs, just like Mare's did. I will miss her always and feel blessed to have known her. She is, after all, the Dancing Queen.
Love always, Martha

Our paths have never crossed but our children were in Kids & Co. together this summer. When my daughter heard the news, her thoughts turned to Kaija and Eli, wondering how they were doing.
I was not fortunate enough to have met Mary. But after hearing and reading all the memories and stories being shared, I feel that I have been given a tiny glimpse into the wonderful life she led. It’s crystal clear that she was an amazing mother and friend to all and I am deeply saddened I never had the chance to get to know her.
May God’s strength carry you through this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mark & family,
I just found out about Mare and am beyond words. I am so sorry for your loss, she is such an amazing, talented person.
I met Mare through being a volunteer veterinarian for the Beargrease sled dog race. She was a great doctor and wonderful to work with. She was great to make us all laugh when it was dark and cold and we needed to giggle.
I am sure she is missed dearly every moment. We were all lucky to have known her. Please take care and you are in our thoughts.

Mark & children: We were so sorry to hear about Mary. Our boys both loved having Mark for a teacher and we were all sad to hear that something so tragic had happened to him and his children. Mary was a wonderful wife, mom, friend and vet. Everyone was so excited that she was opening her own vet clinic here in town. She will be missed by so many people but mostly by her devoted and loving husband and beautiful children! Please know that you have an entire community and even more who have you in their thoughts and prayers.

Where do I begin? I met Mary at the Anderson's Greenhouse open house one year at Christmas. She was signing her new book, and we bought one for our children. Two days after Mary died, I woke up in the middle of the night recalling the words from her book. I got up and read the entire book the next morning through my tears.
I later had another chance to visit with her at a photo club meeting. My husband, Steve, had met Mary there for the first time.
In January, Mary became our Katie's vet. She had a heart murmur as a puppy, and when we called the breeder, their vet had told them they should give us a new dog. We were heartbroken. When we brought her to Mary, she told us that they typically grow out of that and to just wait to see what happened. She was right, of course. Katie did grow out of it. We were so thankful for her wisdom. We were so looking forward to her starting her clinic here in town. She was a wonderful doctor.
In May, Mary and I went on a hike on the Superior Hiking Trail with some mutual friends. It was a cold, wet, and dreary day. The fog was so thick that many of the vistas were hidden from us. We all talked a lot along the way, enjoying stories that we shared with one another about our lives. After the hike, we all headed over to the Americinn in Silver Bay to soak our tired legs in the hot tub. We talked about taking another hike this fall. I will be taking her rose petals to the hiking trail. I know she loved it there.
In early July, our photo club participated in an art show at the courthouse. Mary was there the entire evening. I remember talking to her about a print that she had of her dog. She had such enthusiasm for photography, and it showed in her work. We sat and talked with Mary for a long time that evening. She was so easy to talk to.
I will always remember her smile. She reminded me of sunshine because of the way she lit up a room with her smile.
She was an amazing lady, and I only knew a fraction of who she was. I am glad I had the chance to know her.

With tears running down, I just heard the heartbreaking news. I send my love, strength and prayers to all. Dr. Mary was my vet when I lived in Alexandria. Even when I moved to St. Cloud, I continued to make the trip there for a few years. When 'Secret' passed away, I called to let Dr. Mary know. It was the words she wrote in the card she sent me that helped me through that time. Amazingly talented, wonderfully caring woman....greatly missed.

Mark, Kaija & Eli-
You have so many people supporting you during this difficult time in your lives. You have wonderful friends and an amazing family that will share with you all their memories of Mary. Those memories will keep her in your hearts forever!
Our family was so blessed to have you as neighbors in Forada (near Alexandria). We were able to share with you the excitement of Kaija’s birth, and the news of expecting Eli. It was hard to see you move to Two Harbors, but you followed your dreams. It was where you were meant to be. What a great place to raise a family and to enjoy the outdoors.
Mary was such an amazing Mom. I was always so impressed how she would explain things to Kaija. She was so patient, energetic, and full of fun. She would have done anything she could to protect all of you; she was such a brave person. Mary wouldn’t have been afraid to go on this new journey she has taken.
Mare touched so many lives in her 35 years. We all are better people having loved and known her.

Im signing again, but have to. The wake was yesterday, funeral today. I was so moved by the love and support by so many wonderful people. I now know why Mary loved the shore up there... you feel the freedom of endless love and life. We sat on the rocks and looked across Lake Superior in awe. Its an artists dream. Today was a day of great sorrow, but beauty and love as well. We are all ok and Mary is definately where she needs to be now. Her beauty will live on forever. Love, her sister Susan

To hear of Mary's passing is sad to say the least. My family and I send our heartfelt prayers to ALL who knew her. I just recently came to know Mary as she began to treat one of my Boxer dogs. Mary took so much time and care to treat and diagnose a condition with my dog, Caine, that other vet's had over-looked and misdiagnosed. If it hadn't been for Mary's persistance in finding the underlying problem, we would be without our beloved dog today. She had become the ONLY vet that we intrusted with our animals because of her kindness and obvious love for the animals that she came to treat. She will be so greatly missed by not only the people that knew her, but by her animal patients as well. Rest in peace Mary...Prayers to your family and loved ones.

My heart sank to hear the news of Mary's passing. Every day since, I have thought of her and Mark and the beautiful legacy they built by the way they've lived their lives. They have given so much to their community and shared a powerful love for each other and for their family. Each day since the news, Mary's memory has inspired me to try and live in a more deliberate way. She is helping me remember to step up and do my share to make the world a better place. I hope her memory continues to inspire me this way every day. The thoughts and love of many are with Mary, Mark and their family.

I will always remember the silly little cousin, Mary, playing with my silly little sister, Rachel, when we were all kids in Southern California. Rachel has kept me up-to-date on the Adventures of Mary over the years, and I have always been so excited for her and her little family! Now she is off to another (although so deeply painfully unplanned) great adventure. She will be sorely missed here; however, I believe she will be checking in on all her loved ones, human and mammalian! What a fantastic contribution she made to this plane of existence...I am sure she will do the same on this new adventure. Mare, say 'hi' to Buddy for me!

Dear Mark, Mary and Frank,
Mark, I have not met you, but have heard alot about you and Mary. I am so very grieved for your loss. From what I understand you and Mary were true soul mates. My heart truly goes out to you and your children.
Mary Bauer and Frank Bauer, while I can't possibly understand the feelings you must be feeling, Jonah and Cassondra give me a perspective I never had before. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you now. I love you both and wish I could be there for you in the coming days. Unfortunately, circumstances forbid me from attending Mary's wake or funeral. Please know that I am here if there is anything I can do to ease your sorrow.

How unusual, I thought, that I was reading about Mary's passing in my local newspaper. How horrible I felt when I realized that it truly was Mary Palm. I had the opportunity to spend 5 wonderful, fun filled months abroad, studying in Sweden with Mary during College. I will always remember her smile, the memories we shared and the exact day she cut off that long hair while we were in Sweden. (Some things you just don't forget.) Knowing Mary, I'm sure that she touched many lives in the short time she was with us. I will pray for you Mark, that you will find the strength you need to continue on. She will be missed by many, as she was loved by many as well.

Dear Mare, who I choose to believe can still hear me, I want to thank you for your incredibly astute intuition and your accessibility with my new girl, Kizo, a mere year ago. I don't quite know how to live without you on this physical plane, can only imagine how it must be for Mark, Kaija, Eli, John, Martha, and your other family. Bless you, Sweet Angel. You have given so much in so short a stay.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mary through ECFE and I will always remember what a kind, gentle, and sweet person she was. She had the biggest heart and always a smile for everyone. I had the opportunity to have her as our vet recently and her work and love for animals was amazing and she will always be remembered and missed. May God Bless you Mark, Eli and Kaija.

To Dr. Mary's family and
her Grand Av. Vet Clinic family,
Dr. Mary led a far too short life, but what a full life! Her well balanced lifestyle, talents and the compassion and caring she had for our pets was admired by all who came in contact with her. I was fortunate to become even more acquainted with Dr. Mary while she was writing Zoe's Goodbye and will cherish memories of time we spent at her book signing. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Dr. Mary's spirit and kind smile will surround us when we bring our pets to the Grand Av. Clinic.
Our sincere condolences to her loving husband, children, family and extended family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mary only recently when she became my vet. She went out of her way to be compassionate, helpful and had a joyful spirit about her that warmed you. I was so looking forward to the new clinic in Two Harbors and having Mary so close. I can't imagine the loss her family is feeling, and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting her.
