Steven Hutchison Obituary

Army Maj. Steven Hutchison, a senior soldier who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, wanted badly to defend his country after the Sept. 11 attacks, but his wife, Kandy, did not want him to re-up.

When breast cancer claimed Kandy Rohde's life in 2006, Hutchison, then 57, jumped at the chance to return to service, according to his brother, Richard.

Hutchison, 60, of Scottsdale, got his wish - but it ended tragically this week when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Al Farr, Iraq. He died Sunday in Basra, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Hutchison, who would have turned 61 on June 5, was the oldest soldier to be killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to Defense officials. He was there through a military Retiree Recall program that permits older, experienced warriors to return to action.

Here I go again Steve, I have more to say. Its been the hardest year of my life. You were a great man. I knew you needed to go back in the army after watching the military channel with you often. When you would talk of Viet Nam you had more life in you. You were born a soldier. You died a Soldier. I miss you so much. I always wondered if I begged you not to go back, would you have. I never once begged you to stay. I now know you were meant to go even if it is the worst hurt my heart has ever taken.. Sorry I can send Wildflower Cafe Sandwiches to you in heaven. I cant eat there anymore without thinking of you so I dont go so my sandwich doesnt get soggy.

Thank you for the fatherly advice, friendship and support.

Hello Soldier,
We are well
I hear you made it to Heaven
From the gates of Hell.

I don't have enough words to thank you
For the high price you paid.
Sadly the road before you was already paved.

Thank You so much.
You gave it your all.
You made us so proud
When you answered the call.

I am sorry you will never again see
The land that you helped keep FREE,
But since you were so BRAVE and BOLD
You will now walk Heaven’s streets of GOLD.

May GODS hands embrace you.
Your job here is done.
We will never forget YOU.
You are our native son.

God Bless you for your sacrifice
And may you rest in peace.

My God Bless you and your family,
A proud American Citizen in IL that just wanted to say thank you for my freedom.

I had the privilege and honor of working with Maj Hutchison when he worked as a civilian contractor with HSAG. We watched him go through the ordeal of watching his wife, Kandy, succumb to breast cancer. Steve was a devoted husband and an honorable man. The world is a sadder place with his loss, but even in death, Steve gave one more of God's creatures a better chance in life, his dog Laia, found in Iraq. God bless you, Steve!

I admired his drive, spirit, humor, flexibility and most of all his wanting to do what was right with excellence. Few people would think of doing this during the years that most others would be sailing toward a more sedentary life. But Major Hutchison's actions show us that living a purposeful life is not only good, it's right. As the wife of one of the other "old guys" in the Armed Forces, my hat is off to this fine man. May he be sipping cocktails in heaven and watch down on us with his late wife Kandy.

Forever My Hero!

Steven, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation. Like so many others you have volunteered to serve our country and protect the vary freedom America was built on. Please know Steven that you like so many other fallen brother and sisters in arms that you will never be forgotten and you are heroes to us all. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also paid the ultimate price on 5/6/08 while on a routine patrol in Al Anbar Province as an MP. His unit was ambushed and came under small arms fire and he was taken from us. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him and all our brave heroes serving in our armed services. I stand tall and salute you Steven and will forever honor the memory of you along with my nephew. To the Hutchison family words cannot express enough the pain both our families now must endure and my prayer is that the memory of your brave hero carry you through each day as you cope with this tragic loss. Since the loss of my nephew I have written on every single legacy page of every fallen soldier and included a photo of my nephew. I encourage you to do the same to Aaron's page. I have done this to honor my nephew but to let you know your loved one is not alone and my nephew is with him and they are now in God's gracious hands waiting for us to join them one day. From the bottom of my heart please except my sincere condolences and may the memories of your Hero carry you through each day for he will never be forgotten!

Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Sir, I still remember the natural leadership you had when you first came to Mosul to do the pre-deployment site survey in order to take over the 1-6-2 MiTT. I remember all of the briefings we prepared for you. Then to have them change your mission completely. You led your team in... we handed over our gear and materials and you moved to the complete other end of the country down to the Basra and Um Qasr area. I only knew for the several weeks of the August visit and the Nov and Dec transfer of equipment... but I admired your down to earth, common-sense, logical experienced and mature leadership. I would have wanted to stay another tour under your leadership if I hadn't had a family to look after. Your towering height is but a reminder of the towering soul within. Thanks for the tips and pointers you gave me at our last meeting. May happiness greet you as you come into heaven.

Final Roll Call

Did you hear the sad news today?
Maj. Steven Hutchinson, a brave American Soldier has passed away.
Called by the Supreme Commander over all.
Today he has made his final roll call.

Come Brothers-In-Arms; let us reverently bow and pray
For our valiant comrade, who has fallen this day.
We’ll drape his casket with a banner of beautiful hues,
Those glorious American colors: red, white and blue.

That star spangled banner he gallantly fought to defend,
Unyielding and undaunted, he fought to win.
He fought bravely and he fought his very best.
Now the Supreme Commander grants him, “eternal rest.

With dignity and honor, we’ll commit his body to the ground,
The bugler will sound “Taps” and we’ll fire the volley rounds.
The final military honors we’ll render somberly and ever so sadly;
“Old Glory” we’ll solemnly precisely fold and reverently give to his family.

Each Memorial Day we will recall Steve’ name,
And attest that his supreme sacrifice was not in vain;
For this lasting legacy he gave to all generations;
“It’s honorable to respect our flag and to defend our great nation.”

So close ranks fellow warriors, for our ranks are thinning.
We must keep on fighting and keep on winning.
With pride and honor we’ll march and stand tall,
And we’ll proudly - proudly - salute “Old Glory”
‘til we join Steve at our final roll call.

I am in tears realizing what this man did for his country! Never have I heard of a HERO such as this.Vietnam and now Iraq! Lord how much we need more men like this on earth and what a beautiful country America would be if we had more of Steven Hutchisons. Words cannot express how touched I am by this mans service and love of country. If ever there was a hero, he is Steven. God Bless all of Steven's family and God Bless Steven on his next journey.What a human being we have lost today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The famous philosopher, John Stewart Mill, said it best, "The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

May God bless Steve and the Hutchinson family.
