Stan epitomized courage and persistence in the face of pain and hardship. He was an inspiration to all of us. We spent many precious hours reminiscing about our days at Ravinia School and laughing over faded photos of our younger selves. He was one of my dearest Ravinia pals and I will miss him terribly. My best to Ellen and the family at this difficult time.

To Ellen and the rest of the family--
My sister said that Stan, who loved me since High School, would be my last husband. We talked about meeting in Tierra del Fuego. I guess I waited too long. Stan--I called him Tanky--was a great friend who always kept track of me no matter where I was and what I was doing. I will miss him every day as I know you will. My heart is with you all today and always.

So very saddened to hear this news. As another kindergarten friend of Stan's, I have nothing but great memories..... very early memories. One long ago recollection (too long!) was enjoying going to the Katz's house and playing with Dad's radio.... felt like I was tuning into Mars.... Seeing him again at our 2007 reunion, I found the same kind and sweet person that I'd known so many years before....a person genuinely interested in and curious about others... Sending love and condolences to you all....

Stan was a wonderful person and he will be sorely missed by all his bridge friends. I am only sorry that his accident deprived me of the privilege of workng with him longer.

I am so saddened to learn about Stan passing away. He showed such courage in a hard-fought battle after his horrendous accident. I have attached a picture of him taken at the 60th birthday celebration for the 1967 HPHS graduating class; you can see how he was happy to be with his fellow classmates.
My deepest condolences go out to Ellen and his entire family.

Dear Ellen, family and friends, although I didn't know Stan in his adult years, I grew up with him from kindergarten through High School. We were in the same cub scout group when your father was the group leader. :)
I always respected him as a very intelligent individual with great musical abilities as well. I am very sorry for your loss!

I offer my sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Stan Katz.
I enjoyed playing bridge with "Steamer" for many years, and he was a great friend both at and away from the bridge table. Stan enjoyed life and had a great sense of humor. I'll provide one brief story that bridge players may find funny (and unfortunately will make virtually no sense to anyone else). While teaching me the free-wheeling bridge bidding system called RATZ, which he co-invented, Steamer offered the following piece of wisdom: "Mere possession of a 4-card major and 10 high card points is not enough to open the bidding. With minimum high card points, the major should be headed by an honor or have some interior texture." When I pressed him for more details, he said, "With only 10 HCP, the suit should be headed by a jack; however, a ten with interior spots, e.g., 10-7-6-2, is good enough!"
I miss you, Steamer.
