Jonathan R. Pfender Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2006.
Jonathan R. Pfender believed he had reached a point in his young life where he had gotten "lazy." He quit his job at Pizza Hut and went in another direction _ the military. "Everything that had to do with the Army, he was on the computer learning," said his mother, Peggy Jo Hammond. "He studied whatever he needed to." Pfender, 22, of Evansville, Ind., was killed Dec. 30 in Beiji by a roadside bomb. He was a 2001 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Campbell. Pfender was well-liked by his Pizza Hut co-workers. "They were crazy about him. Everybody was," Hammond said, "you couldn''t not fall in love with him." Hammond said she tried to be strong emotionally in their telephone conversations, including the one in October when Jonathan told her a bomb had exploded near his vehicle. Their last talk came on Christmas Day. She ended the conversation the same way she always told her son good night, since he was little: "Night night, sweet dreams, I love you." He also is survived by his father and stepmother, Randy and Jackie Pfender, and stepfather, Jeff Hammond.

My name is Christine Pfender in Greenwood, Indiana. My youngest son is Jonathan Pfender as well, he is 7 almost 8 in July. We will never forget hearing about your Jonathan Pfender passing. We had several people call who heard something from the other room about Jonathan Pfender passing. When we watched the news our other children thought it was a great honor that someone else had our Jon's name. They have since prayed for your family here and there and it is something that they have not forgotten. I do not doubt that some how we are related. Our grandfather (Kenneth Pfender) passes away a few years ago and he was from Evansville. He and his wife Ester would travel down their to visit and eat in a restraunt almost every Thursday.
Please know that our prayers are with you and your family.
Thank you for supporting your son in fighting for our country.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jonathan, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

"Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you: Jesus Christ and the American G. I.

One died for your soul; the other for your freedom."

The death of Johnny Blaze was an incredible heart-shock to those who knew him. We are sad, proud, and grateful, for he gave the ultimate sacrifice, standing for something that he truly believed in. It's still hard to accept the loss of someone I've known nearly my entire life; gradeschool through post-high school. But the memories of Jonathan will never die, whether it be getting in trouble on the school bus or the crazy stories he told the night of our graduation.

To the Family of Pvt. Jonathan R. Pfender:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly. We lost our son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. They will never be forgotten, never able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your memories will sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

THANK YOU!!! Only those who have experienced such an unfortunate loss can truly understand how you feel. On behalf of my family and millions of Americans we wish you God's Best as you reflect, as time goes by, of the wonderful times you, and friends, shared with Jonathan.

America has many strengths, and one of the best has always been those who are so ready to serve in the military. Jonathan was another fine example of the zealousness of youth to help others, even those in another country, despite the risk of losing their own life, so that others may have a life that provides freedom and opportunity to be all that God wants them to be.

May your memories of him sustain all of your family members & friends, for your lifetime, as you remember his desire to serve others. Know that there are others out here that know what you are going thru! And we are here for you! You are in my thoughts and prayers!
