Robert Schimmel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2010.
PHOENIX (AP) — Standup comic Robert Schimmel, a frequent guest on Howard Stern's radio show, has died after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. He was 60.

Schimmel's spokesman, Howard Bragman, says Schimmel died Friday evening in a Phoenix hospital.

Schimmel was a passenger Thursday in a car driven by his 19-year-old daughter Aliyah. Bragman says Aliyah Schimmel swerved to avoid another car and the vehicle she was driving rolled to the side of the freeway. Bragman says she is hospitalized in stable condition.

Robert Schimmel lived in Scottsdale. The 60-year-old comedian has been a frequent guest on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and on Howard Stern's radio show. His 2008 memoir, "Cancer on $5 a Day," chronicles his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Thanks for all the laughs, Mr. Schimmel. I would rate your show "Unprotected" as one of the top ten standup comedy performances of all time! Your bit about getting a sigmoidoscopy literally had me laughing so hard I was in tears the first time I heard it.

So sorry about all the health problems you had to endure, and of course, your untimely passing. I have great respect for the bravery that you showed in the face of your multiple hardships. You are an inspiration to so many people.

May you rest in peace. You will not be forgotten.

My candle for you Bob, always thinking of you. Times for me are hard right now as I find myself going through some emotions unknown to me and they scare me. I'm working on emulating the courage you had during your darkest times and know that mine don't even pale in comparison to yours but you inspire me to make the best of my situation and to move forward with gusto. I refuse to go down and be a victim, I'm a fighter and a protector. The strength you had keeps me going, allowing others to know your experience has brought so much fighter-spirit into my life and it will never let me falter. You're still my hero. "There goes my hero, watch him as he goes".

I saw an HBO special with Robert Schimmel about 7 years ago...I laughed until I cried. I became a fan then. As funny as his show was...it was also so very heart felt. His outlook on life with so much tragedy under his belt; he spoke of it with such grace and dignity. I thought he was a very funny and talented man but what I really liked was him as a person. It makes me so sad that his life had to end in such a tragic way when he fought so hard to stay here. Robert Schimmel will be greatly missed by so many but not more then by his family. It's amazing the affect one man can have on so many lives. My deepest sympathy to his family. Most of all to his children...his legacy

My wife and I initially saw Bob on an HBO special and immediately became sincere fans of his humor and presentation. We later were thrilled to see him in person in Boston. We also saw the television performance where he detailed his battle with cancer and made a statement which is now indelibly etched in my mind, being a cancer survivor myself. He said "I refuse to let this cancer control my life." Great words to live by. God Bless you, Bob!

I have Bob to thank for a lot of wonderful, wild, crazy, and fun times in my life. First he taught me how to rebel and sneak. Man, how my boring world changed. Our speeding down Hungry Hollow Road in the MG & up to the forbidden Three Fold Farms. Staring at clouds and laughing at how YOU saw them. One of my favorite memories was the day we were up in your bedroom; my back was to you checking out your stuff on your dresser. I turned around cuz you were cracking me up to find your back was to me; you were facing the wall standing on your bed performing on your “air-stage” in front of an audience. Then reality set in when your mom yelled “open the door and come down for dinner”. DINNER - at your house. Your mom was an excellent cook. There we were, Sandy sitting at the table like the well mannered young girl; yet Jeff was not as fortunate a sibling. Against your dads warnings you continued cracking jokes at the table and poor Jeff couldn’t stop laughing and got in trouble. Bob finally admitting to me last month that a specific joke you tell on stage IS OUR SECRET. You will always have that special place in my heart. A belated apology to Betty and Otto for when Bob broke into your room (not to look for keys like with Harry); we were innocently looking to steal a kiss in the wrong place and got busted. Bob, you said to me a few weeks ago “It was nice talking to you too. Right now, our talks our like a vacation for me mentally and emotionally, and I never take them for granted. I'm glad we reconnected. Talk to you later. Love, Robert”. Robert, I want you to heal soon, not just for my selfish reasons, but the world is waiting for your humor on this chapter in your life, which will bring more, much needed laughter to all of those who love you. My best to the Schimmel family for this special person to make a speedy recovery. 9/2/10

My condolences to The Schimmel family. My prayers are with you all. May the love you have for Robert carry you and guide you during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed. I've attached a poem by Author, Mary Frye written in 1932. I know it by heart and read it anytime someone passes. I hope it brings a smile to some of your faces as it does mine when I've experienced a loss. Hold onto one another and take care.

"Do Not Stand by My Grave and Weep"

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

I saw you first when you learned about your son you were at the comedy store. You made it a point to stop by every so often even when you were sick and then the last time I saw you was when you were gearing up for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition I happen to be in Cali and you did an impromptu visit and wanted to try new cancer jokes. I admire you for that (being an oncology nurse) I am happy to hear your daughter is ok. I am glad to know at least if you can not be with your daughter you are at least with your son.

I know your grief is great. Please remember that "time and unforeseen occurance" befalls us all. In other words, accidents happen.
So, draw close to God in prayer for he is "near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” Another beautiful assurance from God is that he also promises to comfort your heart. So Aliyah lean on him, he will not let you down.
