Stephen Beck
"Papa"

Stephen passed away peacefully at his home on March 29, 2011 surrounded by his loving family.
Stephen, the 13th of 14 children, was born to Anton and Oline (Bratvold) Beck on a farm in rural Maddock, ND on March 16, 1921. He attended country school and as a young man worked on the family farm and later lived and worked for his brother-in-law, Ed Schmid.
In 1943 he enlisted in the Army Air Force and after training was sent to England. He was trained as a waist and tail gunner and on April 18, 1944 was shot down over Berlin. He was captured by the Germans and spent the next 13 months in captivity in Stalag 17B in Krems, Austria.
Stephen was a past president of Normanna Lodge and a lifetime member of the Sons of Norway, the VFW and the American Legion.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary; four children, Greg (Jill), Scott (Jamie), Laurie Larson (Scott) and Chris (Nicole). He was the proud papa to eight grandchildren, Jeremy Nyman (Stacey), Amber Nyman, Katy (Sam) Mattern, Travis Beck, Bailey and Hannah Larson, Riley and Stephenie Beck; two great-grandchildren, Noah and Cole Nyman; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Providence Hospital Cancer Center and the wonderful care and support of Hospice of Snohomish County (we couldn't have done it without you!)
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Snohomish County, the Normanna scholarship fund, Central Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday April 2, 2011 at Central Lutheran Church, 2702 Rockefeller Ave., Everett, WA. A gathering will immediately follow the service ath the Sons of Norway, 27th and Oakes Ave. Arrangements are under the care of Solie Funeral Home.

Steve, you will be missed dearly. It was a great privilege to be your neighbor at Lake Riley and in Lake Stevens. I will always remember when you would stop and tell me that my clock on my garage was not the wright time. Then you would laugh and drive away. You are in good hands now. Each time I'd see him and knowing I was Greek, Steve always let me know all the Greek friends he had. Always talked to me about the Greeks. We'd go back and forth about the Greeks and Norwegians and always have a laugh. What a happy, wonderful man! Among the best of the Greatest Generation. Great memories. I won't forget him.

It was a privilege and an honor to know Steve Beck. We're sorry we can't visit with him more. What a life he lived. We remember the incredible story he told of his life during WWII. It was great to hear his stories growing up on a farm. I suppose coming out to our farm once in awhile brought back some of those memories. What a great man, one from the "greatest generation".
