Sgt. Robert "Bobby" Rapp

Robert Rapp Obituary

Army Sgt. Robert "Bobby" Rapp of Sonora was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, the military announced Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Rapp, 22, was four weeks from the end of his deployment when the bomber drove a car laden with explosives into the gates of an Afghan government building he was guarding Monday, said his mother, Jennifer Rapp. Rapp enlisted after graduating from Sonora High School in 2004 as a response to the Sept. 11 attacks, his mother said. He spent four months in Iraq in 2005. The attack happened in the Sabari District of Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan and southeast of the capital city of Kabul. The bomber also killed Spc. Steven R. Koch, 23, of Milltown, N.J. He and Rapp were part of the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Memorial Day is coming and as is often the case my thoughts turn to the events of Sabari, and all we witnessed that day. I have not, nor shall I ever forget you Brother and the many lessons you taught me. I've taught my son about you, and Koch; about the meaning of sacrifice and the weight of duty. In some ways it seems like a lifetime ago, and in others like just yesterday. I hope to get out to California to visit you, and pray you forgive my lamentable absence. You were the best of us; the Regiment, our Army and our Nation are poorer for your absence. Hold the high ground Bobby, I'll see you again some day.

December 5, 2015

I am visiting Sonora and in your home Bobby, looking at pictures, seeing the memorial items your mom has saved, and breathing in you--how much I miss you--Auntie Laura.

Thanks Bobby for your honor and service to God and Country .May God Bless you foreverand keep you in The palm of his gracious hands. Peace. Assunta

I was just ready through my son Jake's guestbook and read your message. I am so sorry to read about your son Bobby. We both know how terrible the loss of a son feels. It has been 7 years for us and there are times still where I feel my heart is breaking when I think about Jake. When we lost Jake I realized what they meant when they used the expression broken heart. It actually felt like that was the case.

Time has eased the pain somewhat and all we can do is talk about them with everyone so we keep them alive in our hearts.

Take care,

Mary Ann Vanderbosch

I was embedded with Bobby Rapp over a several day period during Christmas 2007, while working with ABC News radio. I was incredibly impressed with his maturity and command, despite his youth. More importantly I felt instantly secure and safe with his team - who were assigned not only to do their duty, but to secure a reporter. Years later I still marvel at their hospitality and immediate friendship.

My oldest brother joined the Marines and that was one of the hardest things for me. I look up to him so much. He is the reason I'm going to be joining the Marines too. Every man that joins really deserves so much respect and gratitude. One of the greatest lines I ever heard was when my dad's brother passed away. He said "guys don't worry about me I'll be fine, because where you go it must be pretty cool because most people don't come back. And plus I'll be up there with mom, dad and the rest of the clan." So where ever Robert is it must be nice. So my heart goes out to the family.

I work in Food Service at Sonora High and some years ago I put a poster of Stairway to Heaven in a window there where students can see and read it, along with a picture of Bobby. I want them to realize that if there must be war, they should live their lives in such a way that they are worthy of the sacrifice.
For the pain and the deep sense of loss you must endure every day, my heart reaches out to you and wishes you peace and comfort.

I never met Bobby. My family and I visited Twain Harte and we saw the flyers for the Sgt. Bobby Rapp Memorial Motorcycle Run. I had to learn more about this young man, who sacrifice more for this country than the average citizen. I learned from reading about him that he was an honorable man who was devoted to his country and community--he was a rare individual these days. God Bless his family and those who continue to honor him. He now belongs to the that old tapastry of lives given for the birth, rebirth (i.e., the civil war) and continued struggle for our country, America. My family owes much to men like Bobby.

NO pipes have skirled;
But heaven's wildest music blares;
Above the compound lightning flares,
The rain is whirled.

No drums shall roll --
Only a private soldier gone!
The cold light paints no funeral stone --
No bell need toll!

He lived his tame
And little day of silent tasks
And silent duty -- no one asks
To know his name.

The milestones fade
Along the road that he has come.
No cheer of music takes him home --
His wage is paid.

The wind shrills high;
The darkened day is chasing grief
With lash of blinding rain -- and brief
The footfalls die.

We did not know Sgt. Rapp but he will be in our hearts forever. His great sacrifice humbles us. He was a true American

Dear Loved Ones of Bobby Rapp,

It is with heartfelt sympathy that we send our condolences to you and your family.
We, too, know the heartbreak of war and it's toll on our family as we look back on the special years we had together before losing one of our family members to war.
There is one consolation, and that is, we are the best country in the whole world and when one of ours falls, there are many of us who never forget.
We are very proud of your Son and we know that he is in heaven with God, because he fought in a war to try and bring peace to a region that has never known peace.
May God bless Bobby and his beautiful family.

I can still remember the day I met Bobby through his friend and fellow soldier, Frankie Phillips. His first words to me were "I see we got another ginger here!" His smile was contagious and I will always remember him and his infectious laughter. Bobby was one of the strongest, bravest people I've ever met. My prayers are with his family as they've suffered the loss of a truly amazing and courageous man.

March 26, 2008

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

Jennifer, Ted & Patrick - I am so, so very sorry for your loss. For many people he will be Sgt Robert Rapp but to you he was your son, your brother & I know you would trade Sgt Rapp to have Bobby back any day. I remember how I felt that summer day so many years ago when two soldiers appeared at our farmhouse to tell us my brother had been killed in Vietnam. I know how I've felt everyday that my son served in Iraq & Afganistan. It is a measure of the quality of your son's character that one can do a Google search & have his name appear ten times on one page. For a 22 year old to elicit the response that Bobby has is testament to what a remarkable young man he was. He clearly made a positive impression on everyone who came in contact with him and we are all diminished by his loss.

Don't think of him as gone away--
his journey's just begun
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost--
and he was loved so much.

I am writing to offer my deepest sympathies to you and your family over the loss of your HERO Sgt Robert Rapp. I lost my son in Iraq on May 6/2007, so I can well understand your pain of losing a loved one so dear.

I pray you will be guided by a higher power to give you peace, comfort and strength in this time.

Jennifer Ted & Patrick,
What a fine young man , that you raised. You must be so proud of his life, he touched all of us, we are so proud of him.He was so mature for his 22 years, he will never be forgotten. He helped make a safer place for us , for our freedom. We are with you in prayer, as you try to process this loss. Praise God, he is with him, some day we will all be there rejoicing.

I am still hurting by this loss and my deepest regards go to his family. He was so dear to me and everyone who got the amazing chance to know him. The ceremony was therapeudic it enabled me to grieve his death, rekindle old friendships and it also served as a reminder that life must be lived to the fullest because everyone dies (it is inevitabe). I know that many of us are still in utter disbelief that we will never see that magical smile of his again. Bobby brought the best out in people because he simply was the best. He fought for our freedom and died with honor and dignity. I love you 4ever Bobbo and will continue to pray for you.

I did not have the honor to know your son but he has been on my mind and in my heart since the news of your loss became public. We live in a world where heros are few and far between. Your son is a TRUE HERO. As a parent of two young boys who attend Sonora El. I sometimes question the sports figures, actors, etc. that they idolize. I am proud to say that they now have your son to look up to and admire. God bless you.
