Johnson and I sat right next to each other on the plane headed over to Iraq. We both had our headphones on listening to music. Crunk the whole flight never thinking for one second we both wouldn't return home.
The day of his death I had the opportunity of eating breakfast with Johnson in the DFAC and sharing a few laughs. Again, never did I imagine he would be leaving us all later on that afternoon.
Johnson, you will never be forgotten.

Yesterday was 9 years since you left us, battle. I miss your smile and the special way you greeted me each morning. "Mmmm, Momma J, you smell so good." I will wear this perfume for you each year on the 11th. Almost a decade later your name stays around my wrist & your smile on my mind.

Hey,my name is Courtney. I am currently a Senior at Winfield City High School. My government class was assigned a project. Our project was to do research on past military SGT. or ect. with our names. STG. Courtney T. Johnson was the first person I came acrossed. I am blessed to be able to write a message to all his family and friends. With that being said, I would like to say thank you to all who has served in war. May God Bless you throughout the years to come. And I will continue to keep you all in my prayers.
Sincerly,
Courtney

Because I know you're looking down at me I try not to frown or cry, but still not understanding why causes water to fill in my eye. I do know god had better plans for you so it helps to ease my pain, but often times when I need a laugh I have to say your name. We spoke of dreams and aspirations, but death was never in our conversation. So I'm holding onto those memories and all the good times with momma , trev and family to tell Kameron and Camyz. I'll always love you and keep you in my heart. R.I.P Courtney.

3yrs. later today and still it gets no easier. I tried keeping busy but the smile on your face kept slowing my pace. It's crazy how i still hear you calling me "smoke dogg" and laughing all the time, you and trev being dance machines and me and you being the comedy at the family functions. Man those were the best days. Courtney so many people and things have changed it's crazy, but that was the one thing about me and you we kept it real all the time. I MISS YOU SOOO MUCH! Your memory will forever be embedded in my heart and mind. I know i've said it before but you not in my life is a part of my soul that's missing. I'm still searching for ways to fill that empty void and the one true sign you keep showing me is kameron's smile. LOVE YOU BABY BRO RIP COURTNEY JOHNSON

To the family of Sgt. Courtney T. Johnson, Thank you so much for all that you have sacrificed and thank you, Courtney, for your ultimate sacrifice. I'm nearly in tears right now because my church this weekend honored every single soldier who has lost his/her life overseas during the last 7 years. There was an opportunity to draw names from a basket, and the name I drew was Sgt. Johnson's. Even though I don't know him personally, I AM an American - therefore I know his country, his "home turf"...and I'm grateful for his work to keep people like me in America safe. There's no way I can fathom the pain and the loss your family went through and is still going through - but I can say that I'm grateful, mourning with you, celebrating his vibrant life with you, and most of all very, very, very blessed.
God bless all of you.
Kindest Regards, Sara Christina

I miss you so much. Not a day goes by that I don't pray you were still in this world. You held a very special place in my heart. I have never met someone who could put a smile on my face when I was down or sit and talk with me when I needed someone to talk to. You were a very special person and I believe that the world lost someone who could have impacted a lot peoples life in a good way. I'm sitting here just wishing that we could go back to that day and wish that you didn't leave us. I miss you Courtney soo much and it still hurts that you are gone, but I know you are up there with the ultimate being. To the Johnson Family,2
I had the honor of serving with SGT Johnson during OIF V at FOB Hammer, Iraq. When I 1st met him, I thought he was a cocky soldier w/ an attitude to match. When I finally got to know him, I realized what a good soldier and leader he was. He had this amazing ablity to make things happen out of nothing and always took pride in his work. He was our Brother and he will always be remebered. I recently completed 4 half marathons and 1 full marathon and I always dedicate my runs to him. He is my inspiration and motivation and I wanted to let you know, he is not forgotten.

To the family of Courtney Johnson. Please accept my condolences. I knew then Cpl. Johnson when he was at 2D Maintenance Bn. Engineer Maintenance Company, Utilities Plt Camp Lejeune NC. He is a fine young man who left this earth far to early. He will always be in my thoughts and there is no doubt that he will be missed by many.

I was extremely saddened to hear of Courtney's passing. I was his Platoon Commander with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2002-2003. He was a very upbeat, positive individual - simply a lot fun to be around. My fondest memory is after we got set up in Albania and had a little downtime, tossing a football around with Courtney and another young Marine for a good couple hours. He was a professional, reliable, conscientious Marine. It was a pleasure and privilege to know him.

I met CJ at an intramural basketball tournament in MOS school. His team beat my team because they had him. Of all things I know, he was competitive especially when it came to basketball. We did not become friends that day but it laid the grounds upon which our friendship was later firmly established, respect and genuine caring for each other.
In 2001 I was elated to see him check into the same unit I had checked into a few months earlier. He was a source of laughter, who made light of times when it sucked to be a junior troop; he cracked jokes, picked on people, especially me for my accent. In retrospect he helped to shape me into the Marine I am today. He challenged me, forcing me to always be bring out the best I can. He was a good Marine, a better man; physically abled, mentally tough, and an example of what most strived to become.
It is hard, definitely unbelieveable to think you are gone. It is even more difficult to swallow because I only got this unwanted news yesterday. Just a few months ago I was trying again to contact you via e-mail, sending e-mails to your yahoo account trying to locate you as I knew you were in the Army. Your tour with them was only supposed to be for a little while, you said you were coming back and continue with us in the climb to the top of the enlisted ranks. It is certainly hard to digest but, I believe you are in a great place smiling down at us while you brush your hair as you always do.

September 16, 2008
Hello my name is Darryl Taylor and I met CJ back in 2000 in MOS school and with there being only four blacks in our class we kind of bonded together from the beginning. We became close friends and since i stayed so far from base on holidays and even weekends CJ would always invite me to come home with him. And him and his family would accept me as one of their on. After we graduated we split up I went to Japan for a year while he remained stateside, i came back stateside and coincidentally me and CJ ended up working together in the same shop with us even being roommates our last year in the service. People use to say you couldn't see on of us without the other being far. I use to look at CJ as more than a roommate, a fellow marine or a friend, but as the big brother I never had. I owe a part of who I am to this man. From driving, to playing basketball, getting girls, to dressing, to just having self confidence. I owe it all to him and I just want to say thank you CJ for being my best friend. And may God bless you and your family. You will never be forgotten.

July 11, 2008
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
WOW... just coming to his site and seeing his 1000 WATT smile... it lit up my own face
and then tears for the loss of your dear loved one.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know 'CJ' , but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Asondra, Robyn, and family:
I'm thinking about Courtney even more on this, the first anniversary of his passing. You all are ever in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for being such a loving family! You all are the most beautiful tribute to Courtney's wonderful life. Though I'm no longer in Raleigh, you and the memory of Courtney will always be near my heart.

First and foremost my condolences go out to the Johnson Family. I served with Sgt. Johnson aka CJ during OIF 5 and was proud to have known him. He was the best soldier, my best friend, and brother at most. I think about him everyday and he is always in my thoughts and prays. Everytime I get on the basketball court I always remember him and I running the courts, we always called ourselves "Double C's"(Craig & Courtney). To the Johnson family I hope this reaches you. I would like to write you. Mrs. Johnson I would like to visit you and the community center Sgt. Johnson grew up at. Your best friend

Courtney Johnson was a very dear friend to me! We met in the Marines through a mutual friend. His spirit was such an uplifting one, that can never be forgotten! I remember being in the room crackin up watchin all the comedy shows together, playing basketball, bowling. It really didn't matter what we were doing, as long as he was there, it was going to be a good time. After I got out I always thought about CJ, what he was doing, where he was? But never in a million years did I think he'd be up in heaven watchin down over us!! To his family I send my deepest sympathy!

Courtney,
I was saddened to learn of your passing. My prayers go out to the family; especially your child. My mind goes back to the days at Daniels Middle School where I was fortunate enough to serve as your Social Studies teacher. You were always such a respectable student. For that, I admired you. To your mother, I say thank you for giving all of us an opportunity to be in the life of someone who was genuinly nice. To Courtney, rest in peace.

I hope to see you guarding the pearly gates of heaven. I know you are looking down on us smiling from ear to ear as you always did, in peace I pray you rest. Til we meet again...

I was completely floored when I found out what happened to one of my good friends from the Marines. CJ was and still is a part of who I am today. That's one of the best things about serving in the Marines, you meet people from all over the country and you take something from every one of them. The trait that I feel I took from CJ was his ability to make light of any situation and to somehow have a positive attitude no matter what the circumstances may be. He always had a smile on his face and brought the spirits up of anybody that was near him. He is a person that I am very proud to say that I have him as a friend, and he will remain in my thoughts day in and day out. But, to give everybody an idea of how I know him...I didn't meet him until I got to MOS school with the Marines. We were both in the same class (EERS-03-01), and quickly became good friends since we both loved to joke around and make the best any given situation. Perfect example-we were lucky enough to be selected for guard duty, we ended up being room-mates and had a great time. We'd be out on firewatch all day or all night in the freezing cold, then we'd come back to the room and blare some Ja Rule (back when he was popular, lol). He used to either call me the "crazy white boy from Kansas" merely because of stellar dancing abilities, or "pinky" because my face would always turn pink from the cold. I remember when his mother and sister came down to visit him during one of the holiday breaks, and when they came walking up to our barracks, CJ and I performed our Will and Carlton dance from The Fresh Prince of Bellaire that we had been working on for quite some time...jump on it, jump on it! From there we graduated school and went to the fleet together at 2nd Maint. Bn. located on Camp Lejeune. When we checked in, we had to sit down with Gunny Burger (smeltzer and rainville know who he is) and have a talk. Unfortunately, this gentleman has a very lazy eye that kept on drifting off while he was talking to us and neither one of us could look him in the eye without giggling until he finally got fed up and yelled at us "look at me when i'm talking to you, warriors!" So we did our best to keep eye contact, but we just fed off of each others laughing...so needless to say, our first day didn't go over so well! Once we got all checked in, after being there for only a couple weeks, I got activated for a deployment. While I was gone, he got activated...so the next 2 years or so, we kinda' lost touch due to that factor that Marines have to deal with. Fortunately though, we got back together in the end of our 4 years at the very same shop that we began at. Once again, we made the best of it and had fun along the way. After we both got out at the same time, we talked via phone or myspace a few times. The last time I talked to him was on myspace about 5 months ago and I found out that he had joined the Army. Of course I gave him hell for doing so merely because of the sibling rivalry amongst the different branches. But in the long run, we're all in it for the same thing and we all do our part. I commend you CJ for everything you did to make this a better country for all of us to enjoy for many countless years to come. And I sincerely send my thoughts and prayers to your family and friends. You will be dearly missed bro and I will think of you everyday I am alive until we meet again someday down the road. -Pinky out

I remember the first time I met CJ he made me laugh so hard, I told him you remind me of Chris Tucker. He was a great person and when I found out he passed I was heart broken. He will always be in my heart and may he rest in peace and God Bless him for all that he has done for this country, I'm just sorry he had to die for it. Thank you for being a great friend and person you will be missed. Rest in Peace.
