I babysat for Lucius 111 when his Dad was attending Andover Seminary in Newton, Mass. and Lucius was asst. pastoring in Waltham, Mass. I loved him and Mary and have never forgotten them...65+ yrs. ago! I've always wondered where they ended up pastoring/serving the Lord and His people. So happy to read all this information.

My brother and I went on a Pastor's for Peace delegation to Nicaragua in 1989. It was a long but inspiring truck ride and we stopped at the most interesting places, like the Highlander Center, where we talked to Miles Horton. The trip was about our own radical education. The following year, Rev. Walker came to Poughkeepsie. In his talk, he said that we were working for a better world for "Ted," my 11 year old son who was in the audience. That's what has motivated me all along. Our kids deserve a better country and a better world.

I went to Cuba this year, thanks to your daughter and your pioneering spirit. I stayed at the Martin Luther King, and I felt you there, several occasions. I smiled to look upon the many painted, sculptured, printed images of you throughout the island. I am sorry you are gone to your next journey, and I am thankful that your beautiful and amazing daughter Gail has stepped up to the plate and carried on the fine tradition, the mission of sending aid and ending the blockade against Cuba.

Met and talked with Lucius' dear friend, Raul Suarez, at the Martin Luther King Center in Havana, June 3-13, while on Witness For Peace trip to Cuba. Also met Pastors For Peace volunteers in Durham, NC on their way to Cuba in July. Lucius would be smiling if he was in on these conversations. Inspired memories of Lucius and his work are alive and well still both in the U.S. and in Cuba.

Lucius Walker, Jr. lived his life by faith, and spoke truth to power, even when it seemed futile; that power renders its functionaries deaf to justice and mercy.
In July 2012, we celebrate 20 years of the U.S.-Cuba Friendshipment, an amazing convergence of international human solidarity. Now two years without your physical presence, we 'walkers' embody your spirit, and the countless, truly millions who cry out to be embraced, and be a part of a movement to build and share a better world, with justice, whose child is peace. Venceremos! Siempre! We continue to walk that long walk.....

Rev. Walker was dedicated to uplifting the underserved - I loved that about him. He was also above a lot of nonsense. I loved that about him, too. I was taken by Rev. Walker’s coordination of Latin American Medical School scholarships to American students from underserved communities. This remarkable story has stayed with me because of the hope that it inspires in real time, and because these are the communities in which I grew up.

It is an amazing tribute to Lucius that remembrances continue to flow in... so, especially in this Season of Lent, we celebrate him as one who was constantly on the journey with Jesus to confront the Jerusalems and the Romes of today as they collaborate in spreading the spirit of empire. Lucius is one we will remember next Sunday among those who have been 'born from above' with a commitment to 'liberate' humanity from dominating and oppressive systems of 'the world,' and to build human community around a principle of 'eternal life' that means what it did for Jesus, a life of quality and dignity in the here and now.

I fell so inadequate expressing my feelings about Lucius' passing, he was such a great human being, such a great pastor, such a great citizen of the Kingdom that makes it very difficult for me to express my feelings in simple words. I imagine that I was not the only one who met Lu and was touched by an angel. He certainly expressed with his life the meaning of Christian perfection, he was an example to me and a witness against my shortcomings as a Christian. My heart aches whith the realization that I would not see him again, nor would I hear him again "mentandole la madre al imperio" every time he witnessed in the name of Jesus.
I know that my life will not be the same because one of God's saints has left us to be with the Lord. My life will never be the same because I will no longer hear the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, in the halls of Congress, in international forums, to the church. Your life will be sorely miss in my life.
My heart goes to all of you who are experiencing and lamenting the loss.
Blessings to all.

Gail: Thanksgiving weekend is the first time I've had in months to catch up on personal things, including reading the NYT that has piled up for several months. I was very saddened to read that your father passed away back in September. He was such a wonderful inspiration to so many and I add my prayers and thoughts, however, belatedly. To the family and friends of Lucius Walker and to all who knew him as a colleague and friend and to those many good people who he encountered and inspired to participate in his work of the Caravans to various countries. We are all richer for having been touched by Lu, yes,he will be missed by many here and in Cuba and other countries. But Lu would say 'don't mourn! Organize' and that is the best thing we can do to carry on his work and to keep his spirit close to us. We need him now more than ever and his loving concern for the world must be carried forward by those of us who knew and loved him. That is the best tribute we can pay.

All of us who had contact with Lucius Walker either on the Caravan or as support community will never forget this caring, daring amazing man. He always had a personal word no matter how long it had been since you had hugged him. To the Walker Family,
My Beloved Pastor, Rev. Dr. Lucius Walker left this old world peacefully to be with his God and the ancestors.
Thank God he does not have to rush any more. He was a rock for my family and friends. In 1999 a good friend of mine was critically ill. It did not matter that she was not a member of Salvation Baptist Church. She was someone in need of a visit from a pastor. Rev. Walker visited and prayed for her.
He dedicated babies to God, fed the hungry, prayed with and for those in need, and gave of his personal means to the needy. He was not a selfish man.
" I wanted to nominate him for the CNN hero's award for this year."
I personally will miss him as I think of his easy smile and humble manner of being.
We will do our best to carry on his work at Salvation Baptist Church where he is surely missed as our beloved pastor.
Faithfully submitted on behalf of my family, friends, neighbors, Amalgamated Bank of New York, our local community in Clinton Hills & Salvation Baptist Church.

Rev Walker was known for his sensibility of heart. This could be seen through his dedication to help others especially the young people. He understood that young people are the future of the world and that bringing his contribution was necessary. He understood that he could make the difference in the world by sending love and hope to the unfortunated. He understood that good actions perpetute itself just like the bad ones but stay forever.
Last year, I had serious family problem and was so stress out. I was completely in a state of mind that even my family and friends could not comprehend. I remember that day; I went at the office in New York crying. I was going through so much and did not have a place to spend the night. The entire staff was there for me especially Rev Walker and Dr. Mann Ahmd. In the mist of my sorrow, I remember the voice of Rev. Walker telling me “don’t worry everything is going to be ok”. By saying those words he put out who he was “a person who has a heart”. Those words translate his compassion, love, hope of his heart that he wanted to share with me to fill out what was missing in me.
Reaching out to the needy was the purpose of his life. He was an unselfish, caring, loving person who saw life differently. He was unique in himself. Rev Walker really sowed seeds that will grow and bring fruits in the near furture and forever. May everybody in the world follow his footsteps. May his soul find peace and love.

It is with great sadness that I have recently heard of the untimely death of Rev Lucius Walker Jr.
I had heard of him from afar over many years but I first heard him speak to thousands while attending the World Social Forum in Caracas, Venezuela in I think 2005 and it was this moment which finally inspired me to join The Pastors for Peace caravan to Cuba and back the following year which was a truly life changing experience.
Coming from Britain, this was also my first and most memorable of experience of travelling through The States and ultimately meeting Lucuis Walker in person, working with him and getting to know him albeit for a very brief period and one which I shall always regard as a great honour and genuine pleasure.
I send respectful solidarity greetings and my deepest heartfelt condolences to all his family, friends and all those with whom he closely worked with within IFCO and the Pastors for Peace caravan,in the US, in Cuba and Latin America and beyond.
His untimely passing is a very great and sad loss to the solidarity movement and Lucius will always serve as a great inspiration to me and I'm sure to many many thousands of others who were fortune enough to have known him.
in solidarity and struggle
Best wishes

My condolences to the Walker family regarding the passing of Rev. Lucious Walker. To give an early insight to the MAN LUCIOUS,..I was privileged to meet him at Shaw University when we were students in the early 50's. He was an inspiration to many of us on campus even then. He seemed to have been born to become a leader, no matter the career path. As President of the Student Body, he demonstrated this extraordinary ability. He truly embodied the Shaw spirit that has and continue to inspire so many of it's students. Those of us who were there during his time realized that the World would be hearing much more from this kindred spirit.
Well done Brother Walker, they must be gathering for a GREAT camp meeting to greet you in... The Promised Land. R.I.P.

To the IFCO-Pastors for Peace family and friends. Since I heard the news my heart has been heavy and my thoughts have been with you all. We are so fortunate to have had Lu in our lives and are better people for having learned from him and walked with him on his journey to end the blockade of Cuba and bring justice and love to all who suffer in this world. Thank you Lu for your inspiration, love and witness. The world and this country especially is in a very dangerous moment. I have rededicated myself to the struggle and pray for wisdom to know what to do. Someone else said Lu was the real deal and that he was. After the 94-day "Fast for Life" by Lucius and other activists forced the U.S. government to reverse its stand in restricting humanitarian aid to our Cubans sisters and brothers, I wrote a poem for them. I can't find a copy of it, but in memory of our beloved compañero, I tried to reconsruct it:
When the unstoppable force of our love
Meets the irresistible wall of their tyranny,
Something's gotta give.
It was more than computers breaking through customs:
The people,
Through your courage,
Have broken yet another hole
Through the wall that has blockaded our human family.

I first met Rev. Walker 47 years ago when I was 16 and responded to a church announcement for Weekend Workcamps through Northcott Neighborhood House in Milwaukee. For a Wisconsin farmgirl, the experience expanded not only my religious understanding, but also a deep appreciation of the people in Milwaukee with whom I lived and prayed. My late father, Everett Welbourne, and Rev. Walker organized two bus loads of kids from the city to spend a day out on working dairy farms around the small town of Hartford, Wisconsin. Rev. Walker was a strong influence on my life and my family's. He challenged us to always do more for others; not what was easy, but what was right. A rare man who will be greatly missed.

To family and friends
The Reverend Lucius Walker, Jr. will live forever in the hearts and souls of people who strive to bring peace, justice, and understanding in a world filled with greed and human suffering.
I cherish and deeply admire a rich legacy brought about by his full commitment in challenging the cruel and inhumane blockade of Cuba – my native land.
Lucius through his actions was and continues to be a beacon of hope. His life as a Shepherd of Peace will inspire others to follow his rich and noble examples of solidarity and human compassion.
On behalf of the Cuban American Alliance Education Fund, I convey my eternal gratitude to the Reverend Lucius Walker, and offer my deep condolences to all his family and friends.

I knew Lucius back in the early 1980's when we were both on the East Coast Farmworker Support Network Board together. Just as he was a powerful early leader of the farmworker movement on the East coast, he became the founder and executive director of IFCO, fighting for justice in the U.S. policy toward Cuba. Every year we met and broke bread with the Pastors for Peace caravan here in Chapel Hill and heard their reports and felt their enthusiasm and hope that some day we will overcome. We will all miss Lucius' personal and spirit-filled leadership, but we know that you, his personal family, will miss him the most. Our hearts and prayers go out to you in your grief. I hold both you and Lucius in the Light. "Well done, my good and faithful servant!" We will try to take up the cross he left and carry it to victory. Hasta la Victoria!

Revolutionary Condolences!
It is with great respect and honor that the All African People's Revolutionary Party extends condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and comrades of the venerable Reverend Lucius Walker.
For decades Lucius Walker has inspired, motivated and steadied students, professionals, progressives and revolutionaries alike with his courage, quiet confidence and commitment to justice. He has faced the wrath of imperialism in his unwavering support of the Cuban People without flinching.
His contributions to the moral and spiritual repository of humanity are legendary. His work with Pastors for Peace thrust him in the category of liberation theologists not unlike the Archbishop Oscar Romero, Reverend John Chilembwe, Martin Luther King Jr., Denmark Vessey and Gustavo Guiterrez. Reverend Walker followed a consistent path of supporting revolutionary and progressive movements, organizations and governments. And his support was often times more than rhetoric. He provided for us a living example of the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah's admonition to a skeptical left that there can be a harmonious co-existence between religion and
revolution.
For many years Reverend Walker has introduced, trained and facilitated the growth of the pro-Cuba movement. He has done this in a number of ways. His work with the Cuban medical School Scholarship program introduced to the lives of many students of North America the vision of a medical school experience anchored to the notion of service to the People and that
financial costs to the students would be covered by the state. A concept unheard of in america. Reverend Walker helped turn this vision into a reality. His many efforts at organizing caravans into Cuba exposed the realities of the Cuban experiment to many citizens of the U.S., as well as facilitated the actualization of material relief to the Cuban People. The courageous and revolutionary People we are assured are proud of Reverend Lucius Walker. Progressive, peace and justice loving People around the world are proud of Reverend Lucius Walker, and Africa is certainly proud of her child, the Reverend Lucius Walker. The All African People's
Revolutionary Party is proud and in the most humble way gives thanks to Reverend Lucius Walker and will always remember him for his great service to humanity.
The All African People's Revolutionary Party, whose objective is Pan-Africanism and guided by the ideology of Nkrumaism-Tureism continues its work to build a revolutionary, politically educated, conscious political party motivated by the will and interest of the masses of African People and inspired by the example of the Reverend Lucius Walker.
Viva! The spirit of Reverend Lucius Walker!
Viva! The Revolutionary People of Cuba!
Viva! Comrade Fidel!
Ready for the Revolution!

On behalf of the friendship association Germany-Cuba , the magazine "Cuba libre" and the solidarity group "Cuba si" from Hamburg, Germany, we express our heartfelt condolences to his family and the IFCO family. Even on the other side of the world Lucius has been an inspiration to us through his uncompromising attitude and his courageous work to change the US foreign policy towards Cuba. I had the honor of traveling with him on many pastors for peace caravans to Cuba.

I traveled with the Pastor's For Peace Caravan to Cuba in 2009 and was deeply touched by the compassion, commitment and love that Lucius Walker demonstrated every day.
The world suffers the loss of a great exemplar of justice. May his life inspire others to continue his work.

To Rev. Dr. Lucius Walker's Family,
An outstanding advocate for peace and justice has entered into eternal rest. Words are not sufficient to describe how deeply we feel about his passing. He was the pastor of pastors. As my pastor, Rev. Walker was always there for me when I needed him.
He officiated at my wedding & my husband's funeral, attended my birthday and retirement celebration, and always answered my calls himself when I telephoned him . I shall miss this remarkable man. Please accept my prayers and unconditional support. Call at any time.

In Remembrance of Reverend Lucius Walker
The All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (GC), the Party of Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Ture and Kwame Ture, sends our heartfelt condolences on the recent transition of our beloved Comrade and Brother, Reverend Lucius Walker, a freedom fighter against U.S. imperialism, terrorism, exploitation, racism and injustice, and a sterling example of one who struggled for a better world.
To his biological family and his extended ideological family in the IFCO/Pastors for Peace, the Caravanistas, his Cuban family and all of his other religious, social and ideological family from the various social justice, peace, liberation theology, and international solidarity movements, we send our respect and honor.
Brother Lucius has impacted us all profoundly during his life of service throughout the world. We will miss his physical presence, but through his revolutionary spirit and the historical lessons that we have learned from his exemplary leadership on how to struggle against the enemy, he will always be cherished and remembered by all of us that he has touched. He will continue to serve as an inspiration for those who shall continue to fight the battle for freedom, redemption, justice, solidarity, socialism and peace.
We would like to emphasize the three attributes we feel have earned our Brother Lucius a Chapter in the eternal history of the people’s struggle and its victories:
(1) His unswerving consistency to engage oppressive and reactionary forces and to hold on to the torch of justice to the very end. He never abandoned this torch of service, struggle and sacrifice for justice, peace and equality for all human beings.
(2) His ability to face the enemy, eye to eye, without fear and continue to stay focused, by keeping his eyes on the prize…toward victory was a great strength. Examples abound, including his work and support for the liberation movements in Africa, e.g., MPLA in Angola, PAIGC in Guinea Bissau, and solidarity with the Sandinistas (FSLN) of Nicaragua at the height of the Contra war, where he himself was shot, the (EZLN) in Chiapas, Mexico in the 1990’s; and with the FMLN of El Salvador’ … This display of fearlessness and discipline is to be respected, admired and emulated, for those who seek to follow his path.
(3) His uncompromising and principled position on Cuba and its Revolution, its right to national sovereignty and socialism…his battle cry was… “end the illegal, immoral and racist U.S. Blockade against Cuba and free the Cuban 5, now.” This struggle consumed the last 20 years of his life.
In this, our final salute to our Brother Lucius, we say he was a spiritual man who did not put great emphasis on accumulating material wealth or social status, but, rather, on the need for men and women to develop together as human beings. He understood that human development is the most important development that a society can embrace, and it would ensure all people their rights to freedom, independence, dignity, happiness, human rights and empowerment. His love for humanity will never be forgotten.
In Struggle,
