He attended both Geyserville and Healdsburg High Schools, graduating from Healdsburg in 1961. He served in the US Air Force from 1961 To 1966. After leaving the military Carlos worked briefly for the North Western Pacific Railroad before being hired as a Police Officer for the City of Healdsburg, where he worked from 1971 to 1974 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In 1974 he became a Deputy Sheriff for the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department where he worked until his retirement in 1990. During his tenure with the Sheriff's Department, Carlos worked as a patrol deputy and was a detective for eleven years having worked both Property Crimes Investigations and Violent Crimes Investigations. For the last 15 years Carlos worked as a security guard for Ferrari-Carano Winery. Devoted husband of 42 years to Martha Basurto, whom he met in 1967 at Healdsburg's Centennial Celebration. Loving father to Carlos Basurto Jr. of Windsor, Rey Cajeme Basurto of Geyserville and Erica Basurto McKinney of Cloverdale. Carlos was a huge fan of the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Raiders and enjoyed watching the games with his family. He also loved fishing and vacationing with his family. Carlos adored all his grandchildren and loved watching his grandsons play football and baseball and was a common boisterous fixture at every game. The only other thing he loved as much was spending time with his three granddaughters. This is to everyone who still breaths, I met carlos a couple of times... even managed to embarase a time or two. I can say this, a more wonderful individual, other than my mother.... other than my own father... and my brother Ricardo Arizmendez... have made my life such a wonderful thing. A gracious host, the first to toast... the people of dreams. The ones we want the most. He brought Bubbles and Cajeme just to mention the few and the wonderous others oh believe I'm not through. My tio Basurto, I know you can't see. I Pray every day that if it really is true. One day papa we will meet again. Your nephew, and I hoped was always your friend.

Okay dad....this has been the hardest thing for me to do...it's makes this whole nightmare real..but like you said I need to be a big girl. My whole heart is empty without you and you took a part of me that will always be gone...I miss you so much it hurts...everyday..allday. I can't imagine I will ever get over this and I don't understand how it gets better over time like everyone says because I just miss you more as time goes by, but somehow your getting me up everyday and helping me live my life for your grandkids. I have so much more I want to say to you but I will save that for one of our talks. I miss you daddy and I will love you always!!
Forever your daughter.....

God looked around his garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. His garden must be beautiful, he alway's takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain. And knew that that you would never get well on earth again. He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes, He whispered to you Peace be Thine and gave you wings to fly. When we saw you sleepinfg so calm and free of pain, we would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again. You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide, You live on through your dchildren, you're allways by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Carlos and I were partners in a number of assignments and projects during the 16 years that he worked for the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department. He was a great partner and a lot of fun to work with. He did a lot of good during his many years as a deputy sheriff and detective.

We spent many hours talking about family during our years as car partners (Car 10) on graveyard patrol. Carlos loved his family very much and was very proud of them.

Martha, Carlos Jr., Cajeme, Erica and their families are Carlos' living legacy. Carlos was very fortunate to have had such a wonderful and loving family.

Godspeed my friend.

It is with much pride, I am blessed with the honor of calling myself Carlos' son. My Father has reached out, touched and made a positive impact on so many people. He was a dedicated and devoted man to his career, but he never forgot what was most important...his family. His final months of life were challenging and emotional, but Dad kept us all together and focused by putting up an honorable and courageous fight. He never backed down and never gave up hope, even when the odds were against him. He kept swinging until the final bell.

Dad, it will not be the same without you around. I'm already feeling the impact. Although the absence of your physical presence is a great loss to our family and friends, rest assured old man, your spirit will continue to thrive amongst us. You've left Mom in good hands, she'll be okay, I promise you that. Thanks for Everything, Pops. I love and miss you tremendously. I am not going to say Goodbye...I find that saying "I'll see you later" is more appropriate. Now, go find yourself a fishing hole where the bite is on and save me a spot next to you up there.

Your Proud Son,
Cajeme

Basurto Family,

Our prayers and thoughts are with you and will continue to be for the rest of our lives. Carlos was my Compadre and I wish we had more time to make up for the lost years, but we will always have the good memories we did get to spend with you when we were together. We had some good laughs & good times. I'm sure Comadre Martha wasn't too thrilled when I shaved his head and he looked like Mr. Potatoe Head! LOL But seriously, we will all miss him and know that he is no longer suffering and he is finally resting and watching over all of us. May you Rest In Peace Compadre Carlos.

To Carlos' entire extended family and friends: My thoughts and prayers are with you, today and always.
As you well know, Carlos was a remarkable man who loved his family and friends, his community and his work. He was a caring and lucky man and he shared that with all who knew him. I worked with him for a number of years and there was never any doubt that he was doing what he loved, that he was where he wanted to be, and that, above all, he adored his family.
That smile, that warm heart of his included everyone and he was loved, admired and respected by almost everyone he came in contact with, including a number of the people he arrested.
I'm thinking of Carlos and Frank Trejo keeping everyone in Heaven laughing with their stories and shenanigans.
I know Carlos left his amazing legacy in his chidren and will keep an eye on everyone from Heaven, but still, for me, this world is a much lonelier and scarier place without him. Miss you, my friend!! Vaya con Dios!!
