Lucia Rodriguez Obituary

The night Lucia Rodriguez died, she had dinner with friends and looked toward her future. Days after her death, her friends looked back on the life of a woman who danced with Austin's Ballet East company for more than 10 seasons. Friends Toni Bravo and Sharon Marroquin met with Rodriguez Sunday afternoon at a house near Lake Austin to discuss an idea they had for creating a new dance initiative in Austin. The plan was to birth a project from Bravo's Diverse Space Dance Theatre that would educate individuals about social issues through art, Bravo said. Before Rodriguez left that night, the three dancers were talking about steps to put their plan in action. Rodriguez died Sunday night shortly after leaving that dinner, friends said. Police identified Rodriguez, 33, as the woman whose body was found in Lake Austin on Monday morning. Officials say she drove into the lake; her death is being investigated as an accident. Friends say they think Rodriguez became lost when leaving the house. She drove down South Quinlan Park Road, where there is one sign notifying drivers of the upcoming dead end and boat ramp into Lake Austin. During the day Wednesday, the sign was obscured by branches; it can't be seen in the dark, according to many of Rodriguez's friends. "The lighting is almost completely nonexistent in the area," Bravo said. "It could have happened to me if I had taken a wrong turn. It could have been anyone." It wouldn't be difficult for someone to accidentally drive into the water, Austin police Sgt. Richard Stresing said Monday. Stresing said four or five people die each year in similar accidents at Austin's lakes. Friends and artists who performed with Rodriguez say they want to hold someone accountable for the barely-visible boat ramp at the end of the road, a place they call "a tragic spot." "Although this is a huge cost, we have to come together to do something," said Ballet East Associate Director Melissa Villarreal. Rodriguez lived most of her life in East Austin and was the 11th of 20 children, said Russ Smith, an Austin photographer who knew Rodriguez well. "She came from nothing and created her own life," said Rodolfo Mendez, artistic director for Ballet East. Rodriguez graduated from the University of Texas with a dance degree and was one of the only members of her family to graduate from college, Mendez said. Bravo and Marroquin said Rodriguez's vision for a new type of dance in Austin won't be forgotten. "We'll work on it in honor of her," said Marroquin. "It will have a poignancy it wouldn't have had otherwise." While she danced professionally for companies such as Ballet East and had trained across the country with companies such as Alvin Ailey, Rodriguez's large family rarely came to see her shows, Villarreal said. When Villarreal questioned her about it, she remembers Rodriguez's response. "She wouldn't let her family come to her shows. She said she was never good enough." Her friends disagree. "She danced with her heart open," said Chika Aluka, who also danced with Rodriguez. "I always felt I had to meet her where she was and open my heart, too." Funeral arrangements for Rodriguez are pending. Bravo said she and others are planning a vigil for Rodriguez to remember her life and commitment to the arts.

We all have truly lost an inspirational, brilliant, soul. I met Lucia through a company that we worked for. I had just moved to Austin and was facing many of the difficulties associated with picking up and moving to a new area. Lucia and Kathi Herrin were enormous inspirations to me, and they will both be in my heart forever. I will miss your presence, Lucia but you will be in my heart and mind always.

I knew Lucia through Pilates classes at the YMCA. I was always impressed by the grace in her movements. She taught me well and it was a pleasure being in her class. When I think of her, I see her walking slowly, gracefully, head held high, and her hair flowing freely. I'm so glad I knew her. I share in the grief of her family and friends.

my lucia, one of my very best friends in the whole world, it's funny, earlier today, I remembered one of the things you would say "It's funny because it's true" and we would just break up laughing over nothing. I thought of that earlier today, then I received later this evening the news of your passing. I speak to you directly my sweet friend, you made my life better with our laughter, our goofiness, screaming good times, had a blast working with you 2002-2004, best work friendship ever. Every day was a blast, we had glorious times hanging out at lunch and break, taking walks, hanging out with Kim and David, the best times of my life. I broke down and cried my eyes out a few minutes ago after the news sunk in. I love you forever my friend. Your spirit will shine on us and make us smile when we think of you. I will send some kisses and hugs your way via angel's wings. Tell my sweet Brad hello for me.
your friend forever, Kathi Herrin

I have had the extreme pleasure of knowing Lucia and Aaron for the past two years as their neighbor, and have seen what a wonderful and kind person she is. I've never known to encounter her without a kind word and a smile. She is truly a shining example of what it means to be a human being, was a wonderful friend, and is and will be missed. God rest and keep your soul, Lucia, and thank you for the light you brought to this world.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Lucy's beloved family. As Lucy's second grade teacher at St. Mary's Cathedral School, I recall her as being a sweet and highly advanced student. She was so creative, loved to read, and was so attentive. She set a fine example to my other students. I will always hold my memories of Lucy near and dear to my heart. She acquired her mom Mary's courageous spirit and motivation for learning, as well as her friendliness and respect towards all. I know God has a very special place for her. He created her with much beauty and talent which she shared openly with others who were fortunate to have been acquainted with her. My prayers are with Lucy and her family.

Lucia was the kind of person to be a good friend to the friendless; A true Angel on earth! I wish I could of told her that personally.

I know she is dancing in the heavens for our Creator.......

I pray that God pull your family through this. I know Mrs. Rodriguez was proud of her daughter. Everytime I ran into her at a store and asked for Lucia she would fill me in on how great she was doing.

"Dancing is the most intimate self-dialogue. When we dance, we drop our ego and freeze the moment of time to be in the now. We move to the rythm of our heart while listening to the wispers of our Soul." May Lucia's Soul now rest in peace as she dances with the angels...
