Marcus Mathes Obituary

ZEPHYRHILLS - Marcus Mathes, a Zephyrhills High School graduate, was among four U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq on Monday, his family said.

Mathes, 26, was one of three soldiers killed in eastern Baghdad by mortars or rocket fire. The U.S. military did not give an exact location for the attack.

Mathes' father-in-law, Chuck Ehrman of Dade City, said Mathes' Bible was found near his body. Mathes was married to Ehrman's daughter, Julia, for six years, and the two had been high school sweethearts.

"Like most young men, he enjoyed his car very much," Ehrman said. "He also was the type to make everyone feel happy; he was very fun-loving. His niece will severely miss him. She's in second grade now, and they were best friends."

A fourth U.S. soldier was killed Monday by a shell in western Baghdad, the military said.

Ehrman's other son-in-law, Bryan Harvey, was in a nearby equipment truck when Mathes' truck was hit but was not injured. Ehrman's older daughter, Heather, met Harvey while visiting Marcus and Julia in Fort Polk, La., where he was stationed.

"They were in the same division and squad for quite a while," Ehrman said of his sons-in-law. "They were both equipment drivers and serving over there in Iraq."

I had the honor of running for Sgt. Mathes in the 9th Run for the Fallen. I've read all the information I could find online and I watched the memorial video. His name will not be forgotten. I thank you for his service and for the service of his family. I saw the rock was gone on Sunday so family must have been there. I wish I could have met you.

The kids sang to you ALLLLL day yesterday, and talked about their Uncle Marcus who lives with the Angels and Jesus. Kayne was convinced that you were going to help him win his baseball game last night, because you loved sports too. He knows that you look down on him, and are so very proud of the little man he is becoming.

It is so heart-warming to come back and read the comments everyone leaves. Thank you all for remembering. Marcus touched so many people with his infectious smile, contagious laugh, charming ways and outgoing, fun-loving personality. He will always be missed; this hole in my heart will never heal.
Marcus: We all miss you so much. It is still hard to believe you are gone. Life goes on, but yet sometimes I am locked in the past.
Your little brother will be getting married soon. How I wish you were here to share this day. I remember the day you were married.... Love you, son.

I can close my eyes and remember waiting with Marcus for the end of a short rainshower. We would hop in his TransAm and go drift our neighborhood; around street corners slick with water and oil. Still don't believe he is gone.

Marcus got to meet his nephew, Kayne Ander, when he was born 4 weeks before his deployment to Iraq. Their relationship was one that was held over the computer via Yahoo messenger. He loved his niece Elyse and nephew Kayne so very much... When I got pregnant when my husband Bryan got home from the deployment that they should have completed together-- I decided that whether I had a girl or boy, the name would in some way honor Marcus.
On February 9th, 2010 a beautiful 6 lb. 2 oz. baby girl was born, and was given the name:

None of our kids will EVER forget their Uncle Marcus. They watch videos of him from Ft. Polk and slideshows that we made after he was killed. I miss him every day, but know that he is watching them grow up and smiling down on us.

On this Memorial Day weekend, my church, Corpus Christi, in Aliso Viejo, CA made available all of the names of our hero's who have died in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. I picked Marcus' name from a basket of over 5,600+ fallen soldiers. I pray that the Mathes family find comfort in knowing that an unknown fellow American 3,000 miles west of Florida cares for you and is praying for you this weekend. May you find peace in your heart that Marcus is with God. My flag will be flying proudly on my home this weekend in honor of your husband and son.

In Arlington Virginia, there stands a Military Cemetery where rows of white stones stand in silence. Every day the silence is broken by the weeping of a new widow, parents, or friends of a fallen hero. Those stones shall never be forgotten. They shall never be let to fall. Too many military cemeteries have forgotten stones or have vanished without care. Let this building be a stone that shall never fall. Let it be a place where honor is recognized as we salute Sgt Mathes. Dade City Post Office Dedication 4-15-10

You were family I never had the privilege to know, but your choice to serve and the sacrifice you made defending others right to freedom and basic civil rights speaks volumes of your character.

To say thanks just isn't enough. I'll think of you each time an opportunity arrives to help support our troops and I'll make certain to take advantage of that opportunity the best way I can in your honor.

My prayers are with your family and friends that loved you so. I pray their hearts are healed more and more each day as little by little it becomes easier to remember all the good times they shared with you.

On April 28, 2008; our world was forever changed. There is a wound in our heart which will never heal. Many mornings we wake up thinking, "this is all a bad dream". When your adult child dies, often your loss is discounted because they were an adult, they had married, gone on to school, etc. We know we were very blessed to have Marcus in our lives and continually strive to remember that his life was a gift to us that we neither earned or even deserved; just something to be very thankful we experienced at all. It doesn't lessen the pain of our loss, but does allow some light to fall on the inherent darkness of grieving the loss of an adult child.

To the family and parents of Marcus I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

My heart truly goes out to you Sue, Julia, Kyle, Zack and the rest of the family
A Lt.Colonel Davis said a few day's ago, he's never seen such a serious dedication out of a contractor to the point of the job being personal. I told him the story of meeting Marcus and Julia after they celebrated Christmas in October before his deployment and how I was impacted by this young man's vigor for life, and his dedication for what he believed in. When I was in Iraq for four day's and didn't get the chance to meet with him, then suddenly... The Wife was stripped of her Husband, the Mother and Father were stripped of their Son and I was stripped of a friend, I just began to know. Yea it's become very personal for me. He IS a hero in every sence of the word. His dedication, beliefs and name continues in my work... (This ones for Sgt. Marcus Mathes)

Julia, Lynda, Chuck, Brett, Ms. Bo, Heather, Bryan, Elyse, Baby Kayne and all family and friends of Marcus,

My heart hurts for you, as your hero rests, may you find strength in your faith, comfort in God's love, and peace in knowing your friends are praying with you. Remember those we love remain part of us, our loved ones leave this world, but never our hearts.
