Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Dec. 12, 2010.
SOLANDER, Christa Rosemarie, our mother, passed away December 7, 2010, during her sleep at her residence after a long courageous battle with brain cancer at the age of 67. She was born January 31, 1943 to the late Josef and Marie Leitner in the town of Feldsberg in the former Czechoslovakia. Left to cherish her memory, is a loving sister, Maria and her husband, Col. (Ret.) Bill Grey; her daughter, Leslie Watkins and husband, Jeffrey, of Colonial Heights, Va.; her son, Lt. Col Kevin Solander and wife, Samantha, of Roanoke, Va; her grandchildren, Kati Watkins and Christopher Watkins, both of Colonial Heights, Va. and Petty Officer Third Class Andrew Solander, stationed at U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School in Charleston S.C., and Connor, Tucker, and Patric Solander of Roanoke, Va. and her surviving relatives in Germany; especially her cousins, Seigret Zugner and Alex Zugner. Christa was a longtime state employee of the Virginia Correctional Enterprises in Chesterfield, Va. In her spare time, she enjoyed line dancing, bird watching, yard work, thrift store and antique shopping. She also loved her yearly vacations and visits to relatives in Germany. Christa was a warm and loving person. I knew her many years ago and so funny, just asked Elfi about her a few days ago. She told me she had a brain tumor. I was so sadden by this news. She was and still is a sweet, caring lady that has touched the lives of so many. She now has a new spirit and body that knows no pain, sorrow or tears. She is home where we will all find this in our Father. For there are many rooms in my Father's mansion. Earth is just a learning ground and now she is home.

I knew Christa for many, many years at VCE. I had many long talks with her and visited her in her cubicle many, many times. She would make you laugh and tell funny things, but mostly she talked about her life in Germany and her family. I will miss her deeply, but will always keep her close to my heart. May she rest in peace and feel the warmth of God's hands upon her as she makes her journey into heaven!

My sincere condolences to the family. I grew up with Christl in Wertheim, Germany. I had the pleasure of spending a weekend in San Antonio, TX at one of our Hometown reunions, a memory that I will not forget. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep, since we had a lot of catching up to do, but it sure was nice visiting with Christl and her sister Maria. I will always remember the good time we had.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a lady I considered to be a special friend. Christa approached her job as a professional with standards and integrity rare in the workplace. She approached her friends with a warm smile, a frequent funny story and a sincere interest in their well being. I was proud to call Christa a colleague and prouder still to consider her my dear friend who I will sorely miss.

Ii worked with Christa for many years at VCE and considered her a good friend. We had many wonderful talks and enjoyed her stories about Germany. She will be missed but she surely fought a good fight. Christa's family was her love and priority. condolences to each one. God bless you Christa

Leslie, Kevin and family...no one need tell you that Christa was 'one of a kind'. Her physical presence will be missed, but her spirit will endure in all of us who had the pleasure of knowing her and calling her FRIEND.

Christa was a wonderful friend who shared her life with her friends to the fullest. It would be hard not to smile at the times we had no matter what we were doing. She loved life but most of all she loved her family. I will miss her.
