I knew Dan as a colleague/co-worker in the mid-1980s at United Hospital's Heart & Lung Center in St. Paul, and then at the University of Minnesota where we both went back to graduate school for more learning. While he told me many stories of baseball, I most remember our cycling together - Dan was always fond of reminding me how much weight he had lost since his baseball days and that he could keep up with me on the bike (he being 12 years older than me). I only stayed in touch with Dan sporadically after I moved from Minnesota in 1989, but I will most remember what a kind, caring, genuine person he was. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I just heard about Dan's death. Dan and I have known each other for many years through a mutual friend (Mark Richardson). Dan and I talked once or twice a year about Twins games. The last time I saw Dan was at a Twins game at the Metrodome. It was a playoff game and I was invited to sit with Dan and his friends. Over the years we got together for a few Twins games. Dan was very generous. I remember that he called me a few times to say that he could not use his Twins tickets and that I was welcome to use them (and he wanted no money for them).
I will miss Dan and regret that we did not get together in recent months.

I was only 9 when Dan and brother Dave led Hastings to a State Baseball Championship, but I will never forget the experience of being from little old Hastings and winning the big one. A great family that has been a class act all their lives.

Dear Norma and Family, Our hearts and prayers go out to you. We remember Dan as a wonderful and polite young man in our neighborhood in Hastings. Our latest contacts with Dan were at the Minnesota Gopher football Bowl Games. A memorial has been sent to our friend Father Martinka. He is a missionary in Juarez, Mexico. Leona and John Schutt

To All of Dan's Family and Friends,
We extend our sincere sympathy to all for the loss of a great friend.
We were on our way to the funeral but due to awful roads, we were unable to make it. I think Moose would understand being that we could not even drive as fast as Moose would be driving (and that is really slow).
We will miss Dan's stories even the repeated ones, his wonderful sense of humor and certainly his quoting of baseball statistics! The baseball season will not be the same without Moose!
Our hearts are heavy with all of you, and our thoughts and prayers are with you all today and always.

I was priviledged to first meet Dan when he began teaching classes at St. Thomas and he was so excited about the opportunity to teach there and pass on his knowledge. He was full of energy and inspirational. Very sad to learn he has passed and sincere condolences to everyone who knew and loved him.

Dear Carey Family,
I am so sorry for your great loss. Dan was a very special person, and an important person in my life. I extend my sympathies to you from my whole family. I am sorry that I can not join you tomorow for the celebration of his life. My mother was able to visit with some of you at the funeral home today. Dan's was a life well-lived. I know from following his journey on CaringBridge that he had a large support network of family, friends, students and colleagues. I know that he is at peace and that the Lord is holding him in the palm of his hand. With love, Linda Kelley

Dan was a great friend, teammate and human being, though he would become quite irritated with outfielders who would yell "throw strikes."
We feel a tremendous loss with Dan's passing and wish we could be there for the celebration of his life. The "Hen Room" at Kings will never be the same.

Dr. Carey was my mentor and advisor while I was taking classes at St. Thomas. I helped him in his lab and he was a great help to me while I was in graduate school at the U of MN as he helped me with my research project and even allowed me to do a lot of the research with him at the University of St. Thomas. He was one of a kind as both a teacher and a person. I will miss him and so will the many people whose lives he touched.

Moose was a great friend to my parents and a great role model to my brother and me. With his knowledge and great sense of humor, he was always a pleasure to be around. I'm saddened to hear of his passing, but it's comforting to know that he touched many lives and (especially with all the "Dan Carey lines") will not be forgotten. My condolences to his family and friends.

I had Dr. Carey as a professor for many of my classes at the University of St. Thomas. He knew everything! He was a great teacher but more importantly a great person. He will be missed by all. I will keep Dr. Carey and his family in my prayers. I am certain he has a special place in heaven.

Dr. Carey provided a special service to many in the Twin Cities WLS community. Through him, we were able to get a better picture of our new selves. Peace to Dr. Carey's family.

Saddened to learn of Dan's passing. We remember Moose as a smart, kind, humorous and gentle man. He was a baseball fan of the first oder. It was impossible to stump him with a trivia question. Moose was a ton of fun to be around. He will be sorely missed. All the best to his family and many friends
