Glen Albert Sliger passed away unexpectedly on July 5, 2011, with his family by his side.
Glen was born on Aug. 6, 1931, to Everett and Lucille Sliger in McCook, Neb. He spent his childhood on the ball fields and crop fields, working his father's Chrysler-Plymouth dealership and loading and unloading farming products at the railroad depot in McCook. In his teen years he excelled in sports, played many different musical instruments and spent his summers lifeguarding at the "local swimming holes." He graduated from McCook High School in 1950.
Glen was offered a football scholarship to Nebraska University and was also accepted at University of Notre Dame. The decision was easy! He chose Notre Dame where he participated in the football, track and band programs. In 1954 he graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in physical education and a minor in biology. Glen earned his Masters Degree in confluent education at UCSB. Glen secured his first teaching job at Mullin High School in the Denver, Colo., area. He also coached football and basketball and took his basketball team to two state championships, winning one.
Glen met his wife, Barbara (Bobbie), as she was completing nursing school in Denver. Later they moved to Pisgah, Iowa, to be near their families in Nebraska and Minnesota. In addition to teaching, Glen began a 40-year sports officiating career at both the high school and college levels. In 1956 the Sligers moved to Lemoore, Calif., where Glen taught, coached, officiated and started their family. They lived in Arcadia and ultimately settled in Santa Paula with their family of eight.
Glen continued his teaching career in the Santa Paula Elementary School District for 28 years. In addition, he was the recreation director for the City of Santa Paula for five years. It was at the elementary school level that his teaching skills and caring attitude touched thousands of eager students. He was thrilled to welcome into his classroom the children of his previous students. In later years he was delighted with positive feedback from former students.
Glen loved traveling and camping with Bobbie and family. They traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada. When they were able, the couple traveled to many countries enjoying the variety of cultures throughout the world. He also thoroughly enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's school and sporting events.
Glen lost his wife, Barbara, "The light of his life," in December of 2008. He continued to demonstrate his enthusiasm for life at The Palms at Bonaventure Residence in Ventura. In 2009 and 2010 his sons accompanied him to his high school reunion in Nebraska, and his college reunion at Notre Dame in Indiana.
He is survived by his sister, Jean Todd (Littleton, Colo.); his sons, Terry (Denise) and grandchildren, Justin, Sean, Brian and Kevin (Richland, Wash.); Tom and grandchildren, Wesley and Jenna, and great-granddaughter, Davanie (Gainesville, Ga.); Tim (Evelyn) and grandchildren, Brittany (Ken), Michael and Brooke (Camarillo); Kevin (Ninette) and grandchildren, Heather, Nicole, Andrea, Tylynn, and step-grandson, Trevor (Santa Paula); daughters, Melinda Sliger (Santa Paula) and Mary Sliger and grandchildren, Anthony and Marciana (Ventura). Glen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend and mentor.
Contributions may be made to St. Sebastian School, 325 E. Santa Barbara St., Santa Paula, CA 93060.
I'm Free Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play;
tasks left undone must stay that way.
If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I've savored much.
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift your hearts up and share with me,
I'm with God now, I've been set free.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula Street, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Sebastian Church (corner of Ninth and Santa Paula Streets). A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, at St. Sebastian Church. Burial will follow immediately after the funeral mass.

I just learned of Mr. Sliger's passing. I had him for English in the 5th grade at Blanchard School. I loved his class and his sense of humor. I always remember the way he would kid me about my first name Eileen, he use to say "When I get tired, I lean". He was wonderful

To the Sliger Family,
My wife Martha and I were sad to hear of your father's passing. Glen was one of my favorite teaching buddies at Blanchard School, and he shared such good advice during our many long talks together. He was a man of wisdom and keen, compassionate understanding of human nature; a true friend. It was my privilege to get to know most of you, his children, as your 4th grade teacher. Now I pray that our Lord will comfort and guide you through this time of his passing.

My Mom and Dad believed in them so much, they did'nt utilize their insurance. They just payed cash for their services. No other Dr. was worth going to. Ironicaly I am now in the dental field. Dear Sligers, the thoughts of many are with you at this time. Glen was of the highest quality people we have ever met. He would give you his all and the shirt off his back. I'll never forget him cordinating the relief during the SP floods and his organization in the gym shelters at SPHS and classrooms at Thelma Bedell. God Bless and live as he did.

I knew Mr Sliger as a great supporter of his daughter and the Bonaventure softball team. I helped coach the team for a while and always appreciated parental support for the girls on the team. And he was without a doubt, the greatest supporter of the team.
Will always remember that.

Dear Sliger Family: Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of Glen, Mr. Sliger to me. I has Mr. Sliger in the 5th grade at Blanchard School. He was so funny and fair. Every student liked him and were awed when he punted the football out of sight. We knew he loved Notre Dame....he did not keep that a secret! Sorry to see a great father and human being pass away but Glen leaves a great legacy with a large loving family and loads of friends....a truly wonderful man!

I had the privilege and pleasure about ten years ago to get to know the Sliger family, and what a amazing and fine they are. Glen was the finest of human beings, and the anchor that held all of those folks together. He and Bobbie were proud, I am very certain, to have been able to lead their family into this world. Glen, I'll miss you, and I have a ton of fine and fond memories... To all the rest of the family, my heart and thoughts are with you at this time...

Please accept our sympathies at this time. Your father was one of the best influences in my life in the classroom and on the field. I can tell you a story about a football game at SPHS that I was in and Mr. Sliger was a referee. I did something that I should not have and 2 seconds later he was in my ear;"five two, if you want to let down your team and watch from the sidelines, try that one more time. Thats not how you play football". After the game he came up to me and said, "Way to shape up five two." No ref ever cared about the players like he did. I dont think I ever had a teacher who would treat everyone with the kind of respect that he had. May he rest in peace.

We just lost a great one. Mr. Sliger taught all of my children in the 80's and they all quote him to this day. On a sad day we can have solace in knowing that all those he touched now have the best guardian angel you could ever have.

To the Sliger Family,
My condolences to Mr. Sliger's passing. He was my catechism and confirmation teacher prior to my being confirmed at St. Sebastian Church in Santa Paula in 1972. I thought he was a great teacher who was dedicated to making us understand and memorize our prayers. I had forgotten most of my prayers after I departed St. Sebastian school as a Third grader in 1969. Mr. Sliger made us recite every word of those long prayers to him by memory. Now that was a real challenge for me. However, I thought he was a great inspiration in my life. My sister, Lisa, will miss seeing him at Dr. Stewart's office in Santa Paula. We will keep Mr. Sliger in our prayers.

Dear Sliger Family,
I had Mr. Sliger for 5th grade P.E. He had us do marching, & made me a "guard right." It was fun. He was so very kind. Letha's best memory of Glen: He went into the teacher's room @ Blanchard. Norma Paillette loved pepper. Glen unscrewed the pepper shaker, placed a napkin over it, screwed back the lid & tore the overlapping napkin off. Norma came in, started shaking the pepper all over her food but nothing came out! He was always a great jokester!
Great memories,
Letha Weaverling & Nancy W. Austin

Hey Grandpa,
I just wanted to thank you for being such a great role model, coach, teacher and inspiration in my life. I know you realized the positive influence you played in my life; not only as a Grandpa, but my greatest fan. You came to almost every one of my basketball or soccer games. You showed up early to filled me in on the skills of the players of the opposite team. Your talks always, got my head in the game and made me feel confident. After the games you wouldn't leave until we could connect, and talk about the things I did well and what I can improve on. If it wasn’t for you I don’t think I would’ve received a sports and academic scholarship for college. You also played a great role in my academics by teaching me skills, keeping me motivated and telling me about the requirements needed to succeed after High School. I could talk to you about everything, you always gave the best advice and you were always there. You and Grandma held the Sliger family together, and the reason why all of us are so happy and successful. Thank you so much for sharing my wedding with me , it meant so much to me that you traveled 9 hours to be there. You said, “Well, I wouldn’t miss it” and chuckled. You were always kind, and warm, which made everyone feel welcome and accepted. Now Grandma does not have to wait for you any longer, and both of you can look over us together. I will always cherish the moments I had with you.
