Talbot Chubb Obituary

TALBOT ALBERT CHUBB
Talbot Chubb, Ph.D., of Arlington, Virginia, died December 10, 2011 at Virginia Hospital Center.Talbot was born on November 5, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the youngest of three sons of Charles Frisby Chubb and Mary Clare Carroll Albert Chubb. His brothers Charles F. Chubb, Jr. and Nicholas Chubb preceded him in death. Talbot was married to Martha Capps Chubb, who died in 1990. He is survived by their four children, M. Carroll Chubb (Thomas Langer), Nancy H. Chubb (Pete McQuillin), T. Spence Chubb (Debra Tedder Chubb), and Constance L. Chubb, eight grandchildren (Jennifer, Emma, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Cory, Nicholas, Eric, Oliver), and one great-grandchild (Beatrice).During World War II, Talbot worked on uranium isotopes for the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN, and served in the US Army. For over 30 years, Talbot was an experimental physicist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. His research included experiments that examined the earth's upper atmosphere, the sun, and a process for storing energy collected from sunlight, called Solchem. His NRL team were pioneers in X-ray astronomy and discovered early evidence of the existence of neutron stars and black holes. After retiring from NRL, Talbot worked with his nephew, Scott Chubb, Ph.D., on the theoretical basis of low energy nuclear fusion. Recently, his goal was to raise awareness of the experimental evidence of cold fusion and to foster research on this new energy source. Talbot was a loving, kind, and insightful person with a ready smile, who will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. May 12, 2012 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA. Interment will be private, in Pittsburgh. Memorial contributions may be made to New Energy Foundation (P.O. Box 2816, Concord, NH 03302-2816), Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (800 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222), or the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (P.O. Box 808, Newark, NJ 07101-0808).

A great scientist, and a warm, kind human being. He will be greatly missed, along with his nephew, Scott. This is very sad news too all that were lucky enough to know Talbot.

Talbot was a dear family friend all of my life. It was many years before I realized that he was also one of the pioneers of the nuclear age; to me, he was just one of my Dad's colleagues at the run-down Navy compound next to the sewage plant. There wasn't a pompous bone in his body, and he always appeared to be highly amused by life. RIP, Talbot.

Talbot was the best father-in-law in the world! He was the sweetest, kindest, most generous person I have ever known. I am honored to have been included in his family. He will always be remembered with love.

What a kind, gentle, friendly, genuine, open, good-humored and good-natured, intelligent, interesting, endearing man. Great smile. He always made me feel welcome and worthwhile even (and especially) when I was just a kid. I enjoyed talking with him. To learn lately that he also wrote poetry...ahhh, we'd have had so much more to talk about! God rest and God bless this dear man.

I feel honored to have lived next door to such a great mind, who accomplished so much in life. Fondest memories always of a welcoming home, and walks to school with his daughter, Nancy!

Talbot and I were in the Army together at th Special Engineer Detachment in Oak Ridge Tennessee,1943 through 1945. We were good friends and associates. I always looked up to him, as it was clear rhat he knew much more than me on many subjects. He served as Best Man at my wedding.

My late husband, Kandy Shivanandan, worked with and for Talbot for many years at NRL. He valued him not only as a scientific colleague but a trusted friend as well. He was a treasured guest in our home many times over the years and we also enjoyed our visits to him in Arlington. We marveled at his enthusiastic engagement in cold fusion as a new source of energy right to the end. He will be greatly missed.
