Dennis Greene Obituary

Dennis Greene passed from this life on September 30, 2014 after a long hospitalization. A farm boy and Yooper, Dennis joined the US Army at the close of World War II and served in occupied Germany. His education led him all over Europe and to the Universities of Vienna, San Francisco, Michigan and ultimately to the University of Arizona where he was a professor of German from 1958 to 1990. Dennis married Mary Jane Foran in 1961 after they lost their hearts in Heidelberg. Their four children, James, David, Baird and Moira, were born and raised in Tucson and in turn all attended the U of A. Dennis' passions included German literature, travel, gardening, imbibing, a good party and especially family. Dennis also pursued a keen interest in his Highland heritage. To his nephews and nieces, he was often the favorite uncle. Charming, kind, generous, compassionate and enthusiastic, he lived a good, full life and touched thousands of students for whom he always had a soft heart. Dennis is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; father, Rupert and mother, Anna; and all eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by James (Jill), David, Baird and Moira (David) and his four granddaughters, Hannah, Molly, Bridget and Janie; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. A Celebration of Dennis' life will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church at 8650 N. Shannon Road. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

I went to grade school in Fairport with Dennis. I believe he was a Janitor at the school and rode his bike to build a fire and haul in water for the one room school

My Papa and I had this special bond that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Just the way we looked at each other evoked this emotion of happiness and love. I feel forever blessed by all the time I got to share with him as a child, and I wish that time could have been lengthened throughout my teenage years. But nonetheless, I know our time will be spent together again many years from now in Heaven. I love you Papa, and I want you to know that playing the piano is even more of a beauty for me now because it makes me think of your smiling memory.

Dennis and I worked together at the UA during the mid-1960s in the Department of German and Russian, when I was starting my career as a teacher/professor of Russian. He was always cheerful, always helpful, always friendly, always supportive. That was 50+ years ago, but I remember Dennis well; I couldn't have asked for a better colleague. Condolences to the family.
