Rupert Otto Obituary

Otto, Rupert G. Chelsea, Michigan Richard Rupert Grant Otto died on June 16, 2015 at Towsley Village Memory Care Center in Chelsea, Michigan. He was born May 3, 1919 in Bessemer, Michigan, the second of three sons born to C.A. Otto and Margaret E. Otto. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his younger brother, Donald. Rupert joined the army in 1942. He married Alice Fretz of Newberry, MI on June 1, 1943. During the war Rupert taught for three years at Ohio State University, and was discharged as a captain in 1946. Rupert taught English and Social Studies for more than 40 years in Michigan public schools, and he was also known for his musical skills on piano and organ. His career as church organist began at the age of thirteen and spanned over seven decades. He and Alice gave piano and organ lessons in their home for many years and were enthusiastic participants in the Friends of the Four Hand piano society. Rupert played the Bartonorgan on Friday and Saturday evenings at the Michigan Theater for many years. Alice died of cancer in 2000 after 57 years of marriage. After her death, Rupert frequently played afternoon organ programs for retirees, assisted-living groups, government and service groups, church groups, and others. In 2002 he designed a large three-manual draw knob concert organ for the new recital hall at his alma mater, Northern Michigan University. He is survived by his brother Fred and by five children: Barbara Wilson of California, John (Jerri) of Oregon, Margaret Otto of Whitmore Lake, Deborah (Steve) Burling of Ann Arbor and Jim (Sarah) Otto of Manchester. His grandchildren are Staci Elliott, James (Laura) Burling, Sarah (Andrew) Sesma and Logan Otto. The family would like to thank the staff at Towsley Village and Rupert's many friends for their caring support in the last years of his life. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Michigan Theater Barton Organ Fund, c/o the Michigan Theater, 603 East Liberty Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104, or to The Chelsea Music & Memory Project, Chelsea Retirement Community, 805 W. Mr Otto was my homeroom teacher at Ann Arbor Senior High in 1967-68. I recall him as a kind and gentle man, a great lover of music, and it was thanks to him that I attended a recital by Virgil Fox. I'm delighted that he was able to live to such a great age -- and still making music all the while. Well Done, Mr. Otto, well done indeed.

Rupert was the first person we met at the Michigan Theater that was involved with the organ restoration. This was sometime in the early 1970s. His friendship led us to be part of the theater restoration project. We enjoyed hearing him play for many years.

Rupert and I had a special bond over the last 7 years. He taught me piano, how to laugh at life and that the young and old are not that different. I showed him the importance of exercising to keep both mind and body sharp. I was there to care for him yet, all said and done, it was the other way around. He became my grandpa and my very best friend. I am sincerely honored to have known him. I'll always miss you, Rupert.

As new residents of Chelsea in 2007, Chuck met Ruppert at Big Boy in the morning. From then on, Ruppert's fascinating personality was captivating. Ruppert opened up his home to us, played the organ for us and our friends and family. The likes of this man we will never see again. God rest his soul. Chuck & Carol Quandt.

"The only permanent thing in life is change" Rupert Otto - He had this on a sign hanging from his social studies class in Pioneer around 1975/1976 and it always stuck with me.

More than a piano teacher to me; more like a family member. Rupert was a wonderful, giving soul with great passion for teaching. I will miss him dearly.

An organ never stood still when Rupert Otto was around. Quite a musician. And he always laughed at your jokes
regardless of how poor they were. Rupert was one of my favorite teachers at AA Pioneer HS and I know many of my classmates felt the same. "Mr. Otto, I have one more paper to hand in!" (see below) I feel he is making music and correcting papers behind the Pearly Gates! God Bless!
