Samuel OWEN Obituary

OWEN, Samuel J. Samuel "Sam" Jeffrey Owen, age 20, passed away on February 26 2016. His passing was sudden and unexpected. Sam was a resident of Suwanee, GA. Sam was born on October 22, 1995, in Atlanta, GA. He was a kind-hearted, sensitive individual who was compassionate toward all people in all of life's circumstances; he was likewise very fond of animals - so much so that he quit eating meat for many years. Sam was an excellent student who made straight A's through high school and near perfect scores on standardized tests. Sam graduated North Gwinnett High School in 2014 with honors, and was currently a sophomore at Georgia Technical Institute, studying physics. Sam was an excellent swimmer who was on the high school swim team for four years. He was committed to making the State Championship team for his senior year. Through hard work and perseverance, he saw this goal realized. Sam was a tremendous brother and son to his sisters and parents. He was always willing to help out in anyway needed, by anyone who asked. Besides tutoring and charitable works, he was selfless in everyday acts of generosity, both in word and in deed. Sam is survived by his loving family: Nina Owen (mother), Jeff Owen (father), Maggie Owen (sister), Claire Owen (sister), Marvin and Mary Newman (grandparents in McKenzie, TN), Kathy Owen (grandmother in Tuscaloosa, AL), Corene Bennett (great-grandmother in McKenzie, TN), uncles, aunts and many cousins, many friends, and his girlfriend Sarah Hendrickson. The loss of this beautiful mind and near-perfect heart will never be reconciled in the minds of his family. We are less without him. Our only solace is that he is in a better place where he is already affecting others. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Duluth, GA with Pastor Dr. David Fry officiating. The family will received friends at the funeral home on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send any memorial donations to the animal shelter or the mental health charity of your choice. To express condolences, please sign our online guest book at www.flaniganfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by: Junior E. Flanigan, Flanigan Funeral Home and Crematory, Buford, GA (770) 932-1133.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Owen,

I learned of Sam's passing from a friend who is a coworker of Mr. Owen. I remember Sam as his first name is the same as my son's. Sam came in to the running store in which I work right before the Gwinnett County High School county finals his senior year. He had questions about nutrition prior to his meet, as he told me that he was trying to swim a state qualifying time. We had a wonderful conversation, and I remember being quite impressed and taken with what a mature, intelligent, and composed young man he was. I asked him what events he was swimming, and I told him that I would be cheering for him as I would be attending the meet watching my daughter swim. I remember watching his reaction as he swam his qualifying time, and I was so happy for him when he met his goal.

My heart breaks for you, as I cannot imagine how difficult it is to lose a child. I am so sorry for your loss, and my thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Reading through everyone's messages, it is evident how many people's lives Sam touched. May you take comfort in that, and God bless you and your family.

With sincere condolences,

Kristin Aziz

Nina & Jeff,

Mark & I wish we could have spent more time with you both tonight but there was such a crowd. What an awesome tribute to Sam and your family.

There are so many different connections. Sam touched a lot of lives himself and through you both, his sisters, family and and all of his friends he spread a lot of goodness.

Nina, Jeff, Maggie and Claire,

We are so sorry to learn of your loss. We have many happy memories of Sam from when we were neighbors and especially from the summer when he watched Thomas, William and Stephen while I was teaching summer school. He was so kind to them, and they looked up to him. They say he was the best sitter they ever had and he always reminded me of one of my boys. He was quiet, kind, smart, philosophical and handsome.

When I think of Sam, the strongest memory that comes through is the pure and absolute love you had for him and for each other. I saw expressions of this love so many times and had such admiration and respect for you all because of it.

Dear Mr. and Mrs Owen, Claire, and Maggie

Sam had become like a brother to me from the first day of our freshman year at Georgia Tech, and his passing is a terrible tragedy for all of us who knew him. You and your family have my deepest sympathy. Sam was an inspiration to me. I admired all those wonderful qualities that made him the special person that he was. He had intelligence, wit, charm and a caring heart that made him a great friend.

I will always be thankful that I had the opportunity to get to know him better and to call him a friend. I will cherish his memory for all of my life.

The poet Yeats once wrote "Count where man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory is I had such friends."

In Sympathy,
