Although I never met Joey in person, I considered her a friend. She was a sweet and kind person with a bravery most people would be lucky to even have a half dose of. I always looked forward to reading messages from Joey and had hoped to meet her in person one day. Maybe have a glass of sweet tea instead of virtual sweet tea. ;)

To her family--this is by far one of the most difficult things in your life. There are no words to express what you are going through. Know that you are not alone and that Joey's reach was far and wide and she was loved by a great many people. She's touched more lives in a positive way than most can ever do. She was a blessing in many lives and I wish you the best. She loved you, Ted and Michael, with a ferocity I admired. That, in itself, is something special. Stay strong. Take care.

My heart goes out to Joey's family and friends--I am so sorry for your loss. Such a GREAT great loss that I can only imagine. I only knew of Joey as a fellow writer online--but the support and insight she brought to the writing community was always SO BRIGHT and upbeat. There was a certain something that I can't really explain except to say that she gave off such positive, caring energy in her posts and writing.
Sending thoughts, prayers, good vibes your way.

Joey was a loving, strong mother, and a passionate writer. I'll miss hearing her voice, her strength. It's so hard to comprehend and so hard to come to terms with. To her family, know that you were all very, VERY loved! As much as a mother can love her family, and then some. I'm from AQC and I miss her dearly. We've all lost a friend and a burning light.

I can't believe this. Her family may not know me but I'm SC, from her favorite writer's website, AQC. We talked over the phone for hours at a time, and we hadn't done so for a long long while so I DMed her over Twitter to see how she was doing (I lost her number when I switched phones). I can't believe this. You were so full of life, and kept telling me that you're a fighter, nothing can bring you down. I remember your Southern voice so clearly, so peppy even when life got so, SO hard for you. I literally just cannot believe this. The world has lost an incredible person and a writer. I don't know what to think; never having seen you in person, I don't believe you're gone. I am so, SO sorry for not coming to see you when I was in Atlanta. I don't know why I didn't tell you I was there—a stupid reason, probably. I seriously just can't believe this.

As a member of Joey's writing family, I'm so shocked and sorry. Joey was a huge ball of sunshine each and every time I had contact with her.

There will be an empty place in our world without her. Hugs forever, my friend!

Joey moved away from Memphis to Atlanta about 13 years ago, when young Michael was still a toddler. Joey helped organize my wedding with Rada. Our family was close with hers until she left Memphis. Unfortunately, the class did not get to see Joey at the 20 or 25 year class reunion. I know that I was surely hoping to see her again. Joey overcame stumbling blocks and issues presented to her in life. She always wanted to be a positive influence on people. She will be missed.
