Kyle Calloway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 6, 2016.
Kyle Calloway, a former professional football offensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills, died July 2, 2016, after he was struck by a train while jogging near the railroad tracks in Vail, Arizona. He was 29.

Calloway, who was born into a military family June 21, 1987, in Belleville, Illinois, attended three different high schools in four years, according to his University of Iowa Hawkeyes biography. By the time he reached his senior year, the talented athlete was named first team all-city as well as all-conference.

After deciding to play football at the University of Iowa, he was redshirted in 2005. He played sparsely in 2006, but in 2007, he earned a first-team spot at right tackle. He became such a standout player that by 2009, his last year at Iowa, he started 11 games at right tackle and was named second team all-Big Ten by the media covering college football. In all, he started 37 games between 2006 and 2009.

In 2010, the Buffalo Bills selected Calloway in the seventh round. Although he signed a multiyear deal with the Bills, he only participated in the offseason and as a member of the practice squad. In 2011, he played similar roles with the Hartford Colonials and Baltimore Ravens.

Iowa’s head football coach, Kirk Ferentz, tweeted the news of Calloway’s death Tuesday: “We are all stunned and very saddened to hear of the tragic accident claiming the life of Kyle Calloway.”

In a news release, Ferentz said, “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Kyle’s family and to those who knew him. He was a valued and respected member of our program.”

Kyle was a neat kid with a big heart. I had him in my AFROTC Class and he told me he was a Air Force BRAT. Fast Forward 2 years later...I had a friend who had a 3 star football player moving back from Germany (military move) in his Senior year. Having spoke to Kyle on a few occasions and hearing about how he dealt with moves and his sports I asked him to send my friends son an email....No questions asked Kyle said give me the address and sent the email.and made him feel at ease about his move. He even offered advice and gave the fellow BRAT his phone number if he wanted to talk. He did make a difference in many people's lives and I am deeply sorry that he has left us too soon. Kyle's family and friends are in my prayers.
