Michael Nieters Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Grandview Park Chapel on Dec. 13, 2025.
Michael Thomas Nieters January 9, 1950 - December 11, 2025

Michael Thomas Nieters, age 75, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2025 as a result of MSA (Multiple Symptom Atrophy). He was born on January 9, 1950, in Rock Island, Illinois.

A visitation will be held on December 18, 2025 at Iles Grandview Park Chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on December 19, 2025 at Altoona Christian Church beginning at 11:30 AM.

Mike lived most of his life in Des Moines and embraced many interests throughout his career. He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1968, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1972, and received his law degree from Drake University in 1975. He practiced as an attorney early in his career before following his passion to become a graphic designer with the Graphic Corporation. Later, he attended culinary school and worked as a culinary specialist at the Des Moines Club, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. He concluded his career as a paratransit operator, serving individuals with disabilities in the Des Moines community before retiring in 2012.

While Mike enjoyed his work, he was most passionate about the talents and hobbies he explored throughout his life. An avid woodworker and artist, he shared his beautiful creations with family and friends across the community. He was a past president of the Des Moines Woodturners Club and a member of the Art Directors Association of Iowa. He was proud to be a Des Moines resident, often exploring the city and its history and serving as past president of the Des Moines Historical Society. He was a longtime member of Altoona Christian Church.

Mike was truly a lifelong learner, always exploring new activities with old friends and new acquaintances. He loved photography, kayaking, biking, and sailing, and his home was filled with books. On any given weekend, you could find him watching Iowa Hawkeyes football with a dark beer or playing with his grandchildren. He was exceptionally kind, generous and always willing to offer a joke.

Most of all, Mike loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Carol Nieters; children Piper Nieters Su (Andrew), Belinda Hood, and Michael Jones, Sr. (Patty); grandchildren Michael Jones, Jr. (Kristen, Cole, Connor), Courtney Lyle (Drew), Zak Jones (Jenn), Emily Hood (Tyler), Nick Hood, Angelica Jones (Neiko, Zaylee, Brynley), and Elliot Su; great-grandchildren Alisa Jones, Kal Jones, Charlette Jones, Chase McMickle, Brielle Lyle, Tucker Jones; sister-in-law Grace Nieters and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, Norbert and Gertrude Nieters, and brother Mark Nieters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Altoona Christian Church.
