Roger McCreery Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Grandview Park Chapel on Dec. 9, 2025.
Roger Dean McCreery, 76 of Des Moines, passed away on December 6, 2025, at MercyOne Des Moines surrounded by his loving family.

Born January 21, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a lifelong resident. He was the son of Joseph Marvin and Garnet Irene McCreery.

For decades, Roger was a respected antique dealer. He was known for his keen eye, fair dealings, hard work and endless knowledge.

He was also an amazing athlete.

Roger lived with the energy and spirit of a man half his age. He fiercely loved his family and would spend every minute with them. Anything his great-grandchildren wanted to do he was up for the task. He enjoyed swimming and would catapult himself into the pool just to get Liam and Ellie to laugh. When he would pull-up to our homes the grand kids and great grand kids would meet him at his car to see what new and amazing treasures he had and if there was anything they wanted. He never said no to them and would give them anything they wanted. He never met a dog he didn't like. His rule was simple. Dogs deserve treats and he would make sure they got all they wanted. He was one of a kind.

Above all, he loved his family. He protected them with the strength of a lion and wrapped them in love and protection and never asked anything in return.

He was the devoted father to Christa McCreery-Smythe (Matt) and Joe D. McCreery (Heather); He was a loving grandpa to Joseph R. McCreery (Taylor) Lucas Smythe, Madison Smythe and great grandfather to Liam and Ellie McCreery. He is also survived by his sister Clysta (Ed) /Roll and a large circle of cherished nieces and nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Garnet McCreery, Connie McCreery, sisters Carol Pinegar, and Caren Robuck.

Roger's family will greet family and friends from 5-7 p.m on Thursday, December 11th for a celebration of life at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Chapel located at 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50317. You may send cards of condolences to Grandview Funeral Home or his family.
