Albert Oyama Obituary

Oyama, Dr. Albert A. 88 April 10, 1926 Dec. 04, 2014 Albert A. Oyama was born April 10, 1926, in Portland and passed peacefully Dec. 4, 2014, at home. He lived most of his life in the Portland metropolitan area, except during a period of three years during WWII, when he was evacuated along with all Japanese Americans living in the Portland area to a concentration camp in Minidoka, Idaho. His wife of 63 years, Masuko; their sons, Pat Oyama, Stan (Cathy) Oyama and Dr. Kevin (Karen) Oyama; and five grandchildren survive him. After serving in the U.S. Army, Albert returned to Portland, graduated from the University of Oregon in Eugene, and enrolled in the University of Oregon School of Medicine in Portland. He received the Kenneth A. J. McKenzie Scholarship during his enrollment, and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society upon grad- uation. He received his further medical training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, where he then worked as a pathologist for the remainder of his 38-year medical career. Prior to retirement in 1992, he was the director of the hospital's pathology department, School of Medical Technology and Pathology Resident Training Program. For many years, Dr. Oyama was a clinical professor of clinical pathology at the University of Oregon School of Medicine, now OHSU. He was also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Portland. In 1967, he was appointed by Governor Tom McCall to the Laboratory Advisory Committee to the Oregon State Board of Health. Albert enjoyed a career dedicated to the education of medical technologists and pathology residents. Because of his great interest in the education of medical technologists, he was elected an honorary member of both the Association of Oregon Medical Technology and the American Society of Medical Technology. Dr. Oyama was a member of numerous medical organizations and served as president of the St. Vin- cent Medical Staff, Portland Academy of Medicine, the Oregon Pathologists Association and the University of Oregon School of Medicine Alumni Association. He was an active member of the Portland Japanese American community and served as president of the Portland chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. He and his wife were founding donors and active with the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center. Albert enjoyed his last few weeks with his family, friends and the support of many wonderful people from Providence Hospice Services. It was Dr. Oyama's wish that there would be no service. Remembrances may be made to the St. Vincent Medical Foundation, 9205 S.W. Barnes Road, Portland, OR 97225 or the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, 121 N.W. Second Ave., Portland, OR 97209.

I worked at Prov. St Vincent for a few decades, and have fond memories of Dr. Oyama. He was brilliant, kind, and gentle, and we loved him for all those qualities. The kindness part really made him stand out.

Dr. Oyama was a wonderful physician and administrator. He truly looked out for everyone on his team and had such great wisdom in bringing people together for a common cause. I truly enjoyed every meeting I had with Dr. Oyama.

It was with great sadness I read about the death of Al. I took the obit from the Oregonian out to show David at the memory Care Center and he looked at the picture and said, "that's a good picture of Al". It was nice to know he still remembers him. David so enjoyed working with Al all those years at St. Vincent's Hospital.
We hold your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dr Oyama always valued the technologists that worked with him in the laboratory. He expressed it often. He was respected and loved by everyone.

Dr. Oyama and my father practiced together at St. Vincent's for many years. There was no one my father respected more, as a friend or physician. Dr. and Mrs. Oyama were always favorite guests at our home. Your family should be immensely proud of Al, as a friend, physician and parent. Sincere condolences.
