Alfred Muller Obituary

Alfred Herman Muller

April 9, 1932 - January 22, 2017

A third generation Stocktonian,

Edison High School and Stockton College graduate, Al Muller

received his bachelor's degree from University of the Pacific where he majored in International Relations and minored in Speech. His career as a teacher and theater arts

director at Escalon and Edison High Schools and San Joaquin Delta

College spans 51 years. At the age of twenty-one he was hired by Escalon High School to teach

History, Speech, Driver's Education and First Aid. He was also

assigned extra duties: to direct the junior and senior plays,

thereby changing the direction of his future teaching career AND the rest of his life.

He has staged over 250 productions including the classics,

musicals and a canon of contemporary plays, in addition to premiers of original works. He earned an M.A. in Dramatic Arts at San Francisco State in 1966 and was the recipient of a John Hay Fellowship in Humanities to attend University of California,

Berkeley for one year. Later he completed post graduate studies in Children's Theatre and Creative Dramatics at the University of Minnesota.

An advocate of community partnerships, he has directed collaborations between Delta College, Stockton Opera

Genuine Thespians.

Active in a variety of capacities at Stockton Civic Theatre since 1961, Al has directed, designed, and performed in many "Willie" award-winning productions and intermittently served on the

Artistic Committee and Board of Directors, most recently as

president. He is a founding member of the Stockton Arts

Commission who honored him with the "STAR Award" in 1985.

In his retirement, he had the opportunity to develop two

outstanding countywide after school arts programs as collaborations between County Office of Education and San

Joaquin County Human Services Agency - ARTSworkYES! And BOY'S CHIOR. A one - semester directing/teaching assignment at University of Pacific provided further opportunities to serve his alma mater as a member of the Pacific Theatre Alumni Advisory Board, Rhizomia Alumni (Rho Lambda Phi), and the COP Alumni Advisory Committee. In 2001 the UOP Alumni Association

honored him for "Distinguished Public Service".

Statewide and national leadership roles included: President of the California Educational Theatre Association, President of the

California Alliance for Arts Education, Regional Chair of the

American College Theatre Festival, and National Chair of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. In 1988 Al was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for his leadership and service to state, regional and national theatre.

Alfred is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Camilla; his sister, Lullabelle (Bob) Barton; five daughters, Jessica Muller, Mary Niven, Alison Aldrich (Robert), Lori Gray (Russell) and Domin‚e Muller- Kimball (Paul); nine grandchildren, Christopher (Melanie) Mendez, Jennifer (Greg) Weaver, Joseph (Lena) Mendez, Joshua Uht (Johanna) John Pratt (Nicole), Meredith Wright (Jonathan), Ashley Kimball (Karl), Alyssa Kimball

Miss him, so. One of my fondest memories is when we last visited Stockton, my wife and I took Mr. Muller out to lunch and then he guided us on tours of Edison High School and the theater at Delta College. This was the year before he passed. He was a great teacher and human being.

The one and only time I worked with Al was when I was cast in the Woodminster Theatre (Oakland, CA) production of "South Pacific" - it was its premiere season in 1967. I remember him as efficient, professional and kind. I also remember Camilla who, as our costume mistress/designer, was amazing. A few years later, I became aware of Al's work in the community when I attended the University of the Pacific. I was fortunate to see him 13 years ago to let him know how much I appreciated him. He was gracious and personable. Reading his obituary and all the wonderful tributes to him has been both enlightening and inspiring. I send my sincerest condolences to Camilla and the family. It was truly my privilege to have the opportunity to work with a true professional of the theatre, and one whose vision and impact on his students and colleagues will never be replaced.

Mr Muller was my favorite Senior year teacher when I joined Edison High as the AFS 1967 Foreign exchange student. He opened my eyes on the wonderful world of acting, thus imprinting my career as a PR professional for the rest of my life. He entrusted me with leading parts in the Sound of Music, Doctor in spite of himself, Dark of the Moon, giving me this way a lot of self-confidence, for which I always was grateful to him. His memory has always been vivid with me. All my heartfelt sympathy goes to his daughter Mary. La paix et le salut soient sur lui!

I had the pleasure of having Al Muller direct a play I wrote. He was able to make suggestions that became improvements and gave so much more life to my script. He included me in the readings and rehearsals and was amazing to work with. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and anyone who was fortunate enough to work with him.

My condolences to Mrs. Muller and his wonderful daughter. Mr Muller was such an inspiration to me and influenced my entire life. His faith in me as a young man led me to become lighting director at Edison High School and production manager for Othello at Delta College. I fell in love with his family during the production of A Sound of Music at Edison and while painting his house one summer. My love for him will have no end. May the light of perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Muller was the best teacher I had in Delta College back in the early 1990's.
I always looked forward to attending his class. He taught us so much about theater and plays. Because of him, I do enjoy theater; one of our assignments is to go to 5 plays or concerts in one semester.
He was an awesome person and a total gentleman. I was always impressed of how he talked about his wife and daughters with the utmost respect for them and women in general.
After college, I looked forward to going to his plays, and I would run into him at the post office on Robinhood. I can't say enough, he will be missed for sure. May he rest in peace!

Great man. Those 2 years (69-71) I spent in his classes were some of the best years of my life. Also loved the New York trip to Broadway our group took in 1973 when we got to see all the new plays like "Pippin" and "Grease". He won't be forgotten. Love to his family.
