Kenneth Pope Obituary

Kenneth “Poonie” Pope

Oct. 4, 1946 - Jan. 11, 2017

SOUTH BEND - Kenneth (Poonie) Pope, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. He was born October 4, 1946, in South Bend, Indiana to parents, George H. Pope, Jr. and Ella Mae (Townsend) Pope. Kenneth (Poonie) attended Washington High School and later worked at the Corrugated Paper Warehouse.

Kenneth (Poonie) confessed faith in Jesus Christ at a young age, and he was baptized at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Bernard White. After a long absence from the church, Kenneth (Poonie) rededicated his life to Christ in 2012. He was reinstated as a member under Pastor Andre McGhee. He also spent time serving as a volunteer with the Food Pantry ministry.

Kenneth (Poonie) loved people. He was known for his outgoing personality, friendly smile, and crazy laugh. He liked to joke around and make people laugh. He also was a sharp dresser and loved to dress. His hobbies included cooking and playing cards. He loved jazz music, and in the day, he danced on the Hoosier Favorite show televised here in South Bend. He loved his family and adored his mother for whom he was caregiver during her illness.

Kenneth leaves to cherish his memory: five daughters: Latoya Pope, Stacy (Rodney) Jennings, Taquisha Hines and Tiffany White, all of South Bend and Tracee Minnis of Indianapolis, IN; four sons: Demetrius Horton of South Bend, Martell White of Gary, IN, Shawn Hudson of California and Kevin Price of Milwaukee, WI, and a play son, Larry Palmer of South Bend; two brothers, Ronald (Mary Rose) Pope and Michael (Donna) Pope of South Bend; and one sister, Rosalind (Elige) Hannah of Niles, Michigan.

Preceding him in death were his parents, George H. Pope, Jr., and Ella Mae (Townsend) Pope; two sons, Damien Driver and Kenneth Horton; one granddaughter, Stacia Jennings and one brother, Carl Pope.

He leaves to cherish his memory, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a special friend, Michelle White.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 19 at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St., South Bend with visitation one hour prior to the service.

The Palmer Funeral Homes-West Chapel has been entrusted with funeral services.
