I knew both Jon and Ted Erikson from the late 1960s. Jon and I were the same age and swam together at Ridge Park in Chicago. I will never forget the day he told me he wanted to do something that no one had ever done before. We were both eleven years old. He said he wanted to swim the English Channel. The following year my family moved to Arizona and Jon became the youngest person ever to swim the English Channel. I lost contact with Jon for almost 45 years but reconnected with his dad late in life. I always have missed my friend. Rest in peace Jon. Joe Foley.

Jon... Dad died Wednesday morning (December 1, 2021).
His passing was a shock for everyone.
We thought he was getting better.
The day before, Ted received a pocket talker that I sent and the social worker helped set up a face time call for Dad and me.
Ted heard every word and we talked for some time.
He was happy and even laughing.
So, the next morning, when I received the news, I was shocked.
The social worker said that sometimes when a person knows they are going to die, they "Rally".
And she thinks that is what Ted did on the Face-Time call.
Now I take comfort in the fact that he is at peace and maybe even swimming up there with you and Umbra.
I am sending you all my love.

Dear little brother
It is truly amazing how many lives you have touched.
*******
I thought of you today, but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday and days before that, too.
I think of you in silence. I often speak your name.
All I have are memories and your picture in a frame.
Your memory is a keepsake from which I’ll never part.
God has you in his arms.
I have you in my heart.

I ran across a Facebook post about Channel swimmers, and I stopped and googled Jon. He student taught at my high school (Thornwood, South Holland, IL) when I was a freshman (76-77). I was certainly in awe of his accomplishments. He was a truly kind and caring person. He stopped back a few years after his student teaching cycle and asked how my butterfly times were. He had mostly worked with the varsity team, so I was impressed that he actually remembered who I was, let alone my events. Along with asking he offered genuine words of encouragement. This just speaks to his genuine interest in the students he worked with and all the people he met throughout his life. I'm sad to hear he died prematurely. He is not forgotten.

Jon Erikson's life was fore shortened by a unidentified malady. I felt it necessary to record his last few hours during a sad visit to his hospital bed in Boca Raton. His open water swim achievements as a 2014 Honor Open Water Swimmer are recorded in the annals of the International Swimming Hall of Fame...

Jon was destined for greatness and his life achievements prove that! I am still shocked that he predeceased me. But, I know that he is making a big difference in Heaven. That smile of his was really something! I can still feel how my hand would hurt in my catcher's mitt after catching his fastball.

I was Jon's catcher in Little League baseball and I will never forget having to put a cutout sponge in my catcher's mitt because of how hard Jon threw his fastball!!!! It really came at you fast and hard and even with the sponge in my glove, after catching him for several innings, my hand would hurt. He was a great pitcher, and he could really hit the ball too! But most of all, I remember that he was a great teammate and I will never forget that smile of his, which he seemed to always have. And I absolutely will never forget the time that I stayed over at his house and the strawberry crepes his Dad made for breakfast the next morning. I had never had anything so delicious!!!!

Here's a riddle
I can bring tears to your eyes,
Resurrect the dead,
Make you smile,
And reverse time.
I form in an instant,
But I last a life-time.
What am I?

Jon - you and I were on the same RMP Little League team. You were the pitcher and I was your catcher! I knew you were a great swimmer then, but I also knew you could have easily become a major-league ball player! You had the stuff on the mound and you also had power at the plate - rare in a pitcher! I just found out you passed in 2014. I am so sorry we lost touch! But, I know you are at peace with Our Father in Heaven! You were a true friend and a great American! I'll never forget the time I slept over at your house and your Dad made his famous crepes!!!! Best I ever had!

I remember one year you taught the Boy Scouts about the Hopi Indians.
Here is the HOPI PRAYER of The Soul's Graduation:
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight
On the ripened grain.
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there.
I did not die.
My Spirit is still alive

Jon Erikson is an inspiration - even to people who have never met him. The written story about his first swim through The Channel, at just 14 years old, in his own words, - it's unforgettable. It blows my mind how someone can be so determined, strong and spirited and capable of a heroic feat - at such a young age. He was a truly remarkable person!
