Joseph DiMino Obituary

Dr. Joseph M. DiMino, 76, of Plymouth Meeting, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 26, 1941 in Norristown, he was the son of the late Bartholomew “Barney” & Calogera “Lena” (Indelicato) DiMino and the loving husband of Josephine “Dollie” (Mastercola) DiMino. Dr. Joe grew up in the East End of Norristown and was a lifetime member of Holy Saviour Church. He attended Holy Saviour School and Bishop Kenrick High School from which he graduated in 1958. In 1962, he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science with a degree in pharmacy. He attended Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and he graduated with the class of 1966 with a Doctorate of Osteopathy. On July 15, 1967, Joe married Dollie Mastercola, and in October, he was drafted to Vietnam. He was a Captain in the United States Army where he served as a Flight Surgeon for the 1st Aviation Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division (also known as the Big Red One), Republic of Vietnam, from the beginning of the Tet Offensive in January of 1968 to January of 1969. His military decorations include the prestigious Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal with 2 Oak-Leaf Clusters; the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry; the Vietnamese Campaign Medal; the Vietnamese Service Ribbon; and the National Defense Service Medal. After an honorable discharge from the military in 1970, Joe returned home to Norristown to open a solo family practice on East Airy Street. Five years later, he joined Dr. Tom Natoli on DeKalb Street in Norristown, and together they established Norristown Family Practice. Joe continued to practice at NFP until his retirement in October 2012. His medical career included board certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine (MD); certification from the American Osteopathic Board of General Medicine (DO); board certification as a family physician from both the MD and the DO boards; and board certification as a medical review officer (for drug surveillance). He had numerous medical appointments, some of which included Chief of Medicine at Eagleville Hospital; physician for the Kennedy-Kenrick Football Team for many years; and the Director of Health and the Medical Director of the Montgomery County Health Department for more than 10 years. Dr. Joe’s affiliations and achievements in his beloved Norristown community were among those of which he was most proud. These include the following: service on the Board of Advisors for the Central Montgomery County Technical School; membership in the Catholic War Veterans; President, Child Development Foundation of Norristown; membership in the MSS Society; membership in the Italian American Social Society; membership on the Board of Camp Rainbow for Children; and recipient, Outstanding Citizen of Italian Heritage Award, Americans of Italian Heritage Council. Above all, Joe was a true family man with an unparalleled zest for life and a passion for friends and food. To his 5 beautiful granddaughters [Sophia (9), Mia (6), Maria (6), Giada (3), and Lena (2)], he was the beloved Pop-Pop who always had a silly story, a smiling face, and lap big enough for all of them at the same time. They were the love of his life and are his legacy to a world that will never be the same without him. Dr. Joe was an exemplary humanitarian who was never too busy to help anyone in need. Through his strong faith and love, he touched so many lives with kindness and compassion. His selflessness was evident in his devotion to the patients for whom he cared and his dedication to the community that he loved so dearly. He was a humble man who never forgot his roots—and who was proud of them to the end. In addition to his loving wife Dollie, Joe is survived by his three children, Tara (Jim) Catagnus, Andrew (Ashley) DiMino, and Traci (Peter) Hunter; two sisters, Anna May (Ted) Dragon and Mary “Dee” (Claude) Penland; one brother, William (Deborah) DiMino; his granddaughters; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members. Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing for Dr. DiMino on Thursday evening December 28, 2017, from 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM, at Holy Saviour Church, 407 E. Main St. Norristown, PA 19401. A viewing will also be held on Friday morning December 29, 2017 from 8:45 AM – 10:45 AM at the church. Mass will follow the viewing at 11:00 AM on Friday. Interment will be in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Holy Saviour Church, to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org), or to the Vietnam Veterans of America (www.vva.org). Doc...I still have your personal data in all my comm devices. I've saved a couple of voice mails which I listen to occasionally and recall the many good games of golf we have had at Plymouth and all the other venues. You were a great friend and competitor then and I will never forget now! PROMISE! Joe C

Our family just recently received the news of Dr. D'S passing. It sadden all of us. Dr. D. was a caring, loving, kind man in every way possible. Being patients at Norristown Fam Practice for nearly 30 yrs he was our first doctor. He was an exceptional doctor. He reached out to our daugther, an honor student, after she showed an interest in Pharmacology and decided to become her mentor. His kindness and compassion helped her in so many ways. She attended Phila School of the Sciences with his daugther, on a full scholarship, much to Dr. D'S efforts. She is now a RN/BSN and he was proud of her.
Dr. D was one of God's angels on earth, walking among us and doing for others in many selfless ways. We will miss him tremendously as I know his family and friends will. God bless you all and you have our deepest sympathy. With a heavy heart, Kenneth, Vivian and Felisha Reid.

We were privileged and honored to be his sister and "brother." There are no words to contain our grief. Our entire family stands a little taller because he allowed all of us to lean on him. And we will do the same for Dollie, Tara, Andrew, and Traci. We will ask ourselves when in doubt about anything "what would Joe do" and know we'll find our answers. Rest In Peace Joe.

To The Dimino Family, Your father was my husbands family doctor and then our children's. He referred to our girls as his favorite redheads! He gave us so much help and advice over the years, we are indebted to him for life. I never knew a kinder man. His gentle, calm manner of speaking made you feel better the minute you stepped into his office. We loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. My last phone conversation with him revolved around his naming the granddaughters. How he loved them so. Peace to you in this time of sorrow. Thanks for sharing Dr Joe with us. He was a gentleman and a gentle man.

Dr. DiMino was my doctor in 1972 when I was 12, I later worked as a Nurse in his office in 1983. He was my daughters' Pediatrician and I learned so much from him. As a Nurse in his office, we were always so backed up because Dr. Joe always gave his patients all the time they needed. He cared so very much for everyone. He was truly a loving servant to all who knew him. God is surely pleased with the kind, giving heart of this legendary and gentle man. My deepest condolences to Dollie and family!

I moved across the street from Joe and Dollie on 1978 and they were the first neighbors that I met. Through the years our children grew up together like brothers and sisters. Joe was always there if anyone needed him and he never turned anyone away from his door, no matter how many times they came back. Joe lived his life as the Bible tells us to, and I know that our Lord welcomed him home with open arms. I know how much he is missed by his loving family and everyone that ever knew him. My prayers go out to Dollie, Tara, Andrew, Tracy, and their families. You had the best husband and dad.

Dear Mrs. Di Mino,
I am so sorry for your loss. You were not just husband and wife, but best friends. He loved you more than I have words to express. You were his everything.
As you already know it was a honor to have Doctor as my friend for so many years. I often said G d sent him to me, and so many others, as a special gift.
Even during his illness he kept on giving of him self. He and I started a support group for Veterans in Phila. He attended the meetings even when he was ill. He was the guest speaker , this past Veterans Day ,at a Nursing Home. He struggled but stayed the entire event.
One Veterans event really remains in my mind. Dr. saw an elderly Veteran looking about. Dr asked if he needed something. The man replied" I am looking for a clock to see what time it is. Dr asked if he had a watch and the Veteran replied no. Doctor took of his watch and gave it to him.
That was Doctor Di Mino. He gave everything he had to help anyone . No thanks was necessary.

I know G-d is with you and your family and doctor is sitting next to him. Who else would G-d want to be with ?

My sincere sympathy to Dollie and family. I met Joe in 1975 and worked with him for several years in the Airy and DeKalb St offices. However, we remained friends over these many years and it saddens me to hear of his passing. May God give all of you strength to cope with your loss, especially during this Christmas season.

Dollie and family:

He was an incredible man, husband, father, grandfather and Doctor. Everyone he met or helped knew he was not typical. We will never forget how blessed we were to have had him as our doctor when we were all the same age; The medical profession changed so much over the years; but Joe did not. Our sincerest condolences to you; and the consolation is that when we make it to Heaven; he will be there to greet us with his beautiful smile. Guy & Maria Sacco

Dollie, So sad about the Passing of "Doc". I spoke wit him this summer and knew he had an uphill fight on his hand. As anyone who knew him knew he always had a positive outlook. At this time I shared with Doc that our mutual friend, Dick Fenn was undergoing treatment for Bladder Cancer, and of course Doc was on the phone with him offering encouraging words. He will be missed by all who knew him and never forgotten until the last soul who knew Doc Dimino passes. May he Rest in Peace and be given a warm welcome into the Kingdom of Heaven.
