Steve Smith Obituary

KINSTON - Steve Smith died peacefully during an afternoon nap on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the age of 63. The previous night he slept better than he had in years and enjoyed the return of his appetite. Steve was a world renowned Shad and Speckled Trout Fisherman and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He enjoyed lunch each day with his friends, looked forward to the UNC football season, and was proud that his Heels won the 2009 NCAA Championship. Most importantly, he eagerly awaited the birth of his second grandson, Taylor, who will arrive in just under a month. He was loved by his family and many friends and lived his entire life in the city of Kinston. He was the son of the late Gertrude and Bill Smith. He is sur-vived by his wife of 39 years, Susan Rayner Smith; and his daughter and son, Rayner Smith McMahan and her husband James, and his one year old grandson, Hudson from Apex, and Randall Smith of Wilmington. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Daniels of Wilmington. There will be a graveside service on July 4 at 11 a.m. at Westview Cemetery with visitation being at the Smith residence after the service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Kinston Arts Counsel in his name. Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Sign the guest book at www.kinston.com. (Paid obituary)

The last 3 visits to Kinston to see my cousins they've actually given me Steve's address and shown me where he lives but I put off till the next trip. Well, Steve it looks like you've taken that final trip and I'm sorry it had to end so soon. If I get that far please don't black- ball me and thanks for all the laughs at Carolina.

Rayner & Mrs. Smith

Our lives are not marked by the quantity of years but the quality of years. Your dad spent his days doing quality things, fishing and UNC games! I know he loved being a grand dad and I know you have lots of wonderful memories of him. What a blessing to sleep in peace. May you find comfort in the Lord during this time.
