Thelma Hieb Obituary

Thelma E. Hieb of Lodi, California passed away October 13, 2010. Thelma was born October 10, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska to Rudy and Esther Meissner. She spent her early years in rural Nebraska and moved to Lodi in 1943. She graduated from Lodi Union High School and worked briefly for F&M Bank in Lodi and Galt after graduation. Thelma married Leroy L. Hieb in 1954 and lived the remainder of her life on their farm east of Lodi, where they had a dairy, raised beef cattle and various row crops, and eventually focused on wine grapes.
Thelma was an only child and her best friends growing up were her pets and the farm animals. This love of animals, the outdoors, and country life was enduring. After her family was raised, Thelma trained and showed her 2 border collies and was active with the San Joaquin Dog Training Club. She was an avid gardener, with large vegetable and flower gardens, including over 200 Old Garden Roses. She actively helped Leroy with the farm, and was especially proud of her Class A license that allowed her to drive the grape gondolas to the wineries. She loved to hike and even in her 70s she could easily keep up with the younger generations. Thelma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lodi, with many good friends from the Meridians social group.
Thelma is survived by her daughters Kathryn Hieb, Louise (Mark) Woehl, and Barbara (David) Uhlich, grandchildren Christy (Joe) Novo, David (Susan) Woehl, and Stephanie, Rebecca, and Stephen Uhlich, great grandchildren Kayla, Madison, Lauren, Jeff, and Hannah, and her sisters-in-law and wonderful friends Virginia Hieb and Betty Hieb. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 PM on Monday, October 18, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church, 200 W. Oak Street, Lodi, followed by a reception at the church. No visitation will be held.
Donations in Thelma's memory may be made to Heifer Project International, Attn: Donor Services, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR. 75503 www.heifer.org. I was Thelma night shift care giver. I spent almost a year with her. It was my home away from home. She had many wonderful stories to tell about Nebraska. She loved talking about all of her family and wanted to go back home to visit. I will miss her and her daughters. Thank you, Jan Royce

Louise, I was just asking Kristy at lunch how her grandmother was, and she told me that she passed away! I am not very good about always reading the paper. Sorry for your loss, I know you worked hard at honoring your mother's wishes of being able to stay in her home.

I was so lucky to have Thelma as my aunt. I spent many wonderful days with her and always learned something. Because of her, I know how to peel fruit the right way. She will be missed, but we have good memories of a special person. Let me know if I can do anything to help. Marilyn and Stan
