Googled his name after coming across an old cookbook he put together and published. I worked with Hippo in the Blue (Neuro) Unit at MCCG. He showed me where the best fish sandwiches in town are (Saleem's). My wife and I still grab one when going through Macon. Fun guy to work with! Sorry to hear of his passing.

How Ya'll Durin',
It's hard to imagine that our friend and brother Hippo has been gone for a year. I miss him greatly but know that I am a better person for having as him a friend.

I can't believe it's been a year since you've been gone. I really miss you a lot and think of you often. Michael and Robert still want to press all the buttons everytime we get in an elevator "cause that's what Mr. Hippo did" they'll say.

Kelly Weaver printed a really sweet poem of rememberance and had them posted around today. Hippo would have been proud.

Thinking of you often,

Debbie

I was so stunned to hear of the loss of Hippo. He was one of the first people I met when I started working at the Med in EMS. I went on my first call at the Med with Hippo. He was truly a gentle giant and a great man. I am the better just for having met and known Hippo. To his family, may God give you the strength you need to face the days ahead and use his precious memories to see you through. Hippo may be gone, but will NEVER be forgotten!

It's so hard to believe you are gone Hippo! you really took me under your wing when I came to the EC in 1996. You kept me in stitches. Your jokes would have me in the ER floor laughing. You also taught me a lot of what I know today. Some of your advice was invaluable. Too bad I didn't take the most important bit of advice you ever gave me....."Shirley....put a pen in your mouth (like I do sometimes)and clamp down on it with your teeth. It will keep you from running your mouth! That mouth will get you in trouble around here!" You were right....I learned the hard way! Your stories and practical jokes will never ever be forgotten. I will see you on the other side. When I get there, I am going to say, "Hello again NURSE"....and I may even give you a betadine tail!

I'm sure you are keeping the angels in stitches. Just tell some of your COWBOY stories.....they will all just love it.

You will be missed

To Mike's family:
I have known Hippo for 17 years. My most vivid memories are of him in the EC. I can save that he saved my life at least once if not more. A seclusion patient pulled a razorblade on me and Hippo stuck out his hand to shake this guy's hand. The patient shook his hand and Hippo never let go of him. The razor came by my neck and face and then he was down, on the ground. He kept him from cutting me and I will always be thankful for his quick thinking. Working a trauma, well we used to call it Trauma Time, he was always on the mark and a real asset to any task that he was involved in. We laughed allot and complained allot together and I am glad that I knew him. See you later Nurse!
And to his family, you will be together again someday! You WILL be together again. Hippo would never let you down!!
Much love and sympathy,
Chris and Jill Wilson Brown

I have greatly missed seeing Hippo pass by me at the desk of the Childrens Hospital. He was always upbeat and had something cute to say to me. Hippo was a true gentleman, loved and respected by many, and especially me. Thanks for the memories, Hippo, my friend, I will never, ever forget you. Until we meet again.

I grew up in Reynolds with the Hippo Twins. To me, they were "older brothers"/bodyguards/ role-models in mischief. I thought they were too cool for school, especially the time they actually cut the top off of an old car to make their own convertible, then rode around in it all over town. Reynolds people were proud to tell stories of how the twins would go to all-u-can-eat diners and take turns going in, till all the food was gone. It was like we had our own local Paul Bunyan times two! They were larger than life. I treasure those memories. My thoughts and prayers are with Will and the rest of the family. Mike was an awesome person, and we will all cherish his legacy.

A dear friend has passed and will surely be missed by many, many people whose lives he touched with humor, love, and T.L.C. and all of the wonderful things that made him who he was. I worked in Dublin, Sandersville, and Milledgeville and saw Mike as a coworker throughout the last thirty years. We also attended college together at Macon. I never worked with anyone who had a better attitude all the time. I'm sorry for your loss. Heaven's a little better now because "Hippo" is there. May GOD bless you with His peace and love.

Hippo was a friend and colleague whom I knew for almost 23 years. I knew him as a kind, gentle, compassionate and fun man who never met a stranger. How can I ever forget the call I received from him on the morning of my 55th birthday to inform me that I was now eligile for the Kroger senior citizen discount - what a guy! All who came to know Hippo will miss him for when he left he took a little bit of our hearts.

Hippo, this is for you - from an Old Irish Blessing:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hallow of His hand.

To the Crawley family:
Mike was a wonderful person and definitely in the right profession. I went to school with Mike at FVHS back in the 70's and, after all those years, ran into him at the Med Ctr Cath Lab--my son was taken to the Medical Center with chest pains. Mike was great and such a comfort to my son and me. The nursing world has lost one of it's finest.

Sara, Will, and Family,

I will miss Hippo terribly. He was as good as they come, and always had a smile, or a good joke to tell. I got to know him when he was assigned to work in my room in the cath lab. We became partners and always did the first case together. We had such a good working relationship that he even called me his "work-wife" (something about he could get that kind of abuse at home!!). I'm really going to miss him. Thank you Will, Sara and family for sharing Hippo with us. It was an honor to work with him and I'm very glad that I was given that opportunity. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

We will miss Hippo tremendously. He was a pleasure to work with in the GHC, because he was a leader among the nursing staff. Hippo always set an example for all of the GHC nurses to follow. My condolences to the family and to you Susan(an old friend) you will be in my thoughts and prayers!

Hippo was a wonderful Co-worker and an even better friend. He always liked to make people laugh either by telling a joke or one of his stories. He would help anyone in need. Every one loved Hippo, and he knew so many people because he would talk to anyone no matter who it was. My son (who is 4) wanted to see Hippo everytime he came to the Hospital. He will be missed by many people who's lives he touched.

Hippo, you will be missed. I will always remember the old days when we both worked in EMS; all the long hours and even the tough calls; but, you were always there to help the patients and help us get trough the shifts. As we both became "Nurses" and continued our careers you excelled. You will be missed my friend, but I know you go to be with all of our friends who were there waiting to welcome you home. Mark and I will always remember you and look forward to seeing you again. So "Nurse" thank you for the memories. To your family we will keep you in our prayers.

Hippo, I consider you one of my best friends. I knew I could always count on you for advise when I needed it. From stock and gambling tips, to questions about my career, to just advise about life itself, you were always there for me. I will truly miss our times together. However, I know we will meet up again someday, and I look forward to "hanging out" with you again. Also, I must say I am a bit jealous of you. Because, you have the best seat in the house for the Superbowl! I will remember you always.

To The Crawley Family,
May you find comfort in knowing that "Hippo" impacted so many lives in such special and heartfelt ways. As we listen to varies accounts of his life and the many encounters he had with so many people, The common thread seems always to be care and concern he had for others. It was not "talk the talk", but for Hippo it was action. From a kind word of salutation to helping to someone destitute, or taking some new employee under his wing to show them the ropes. He was a gentle giant.
May God guide and guard you.

Pharis Jennings

February 3, 2007

To the Crawley family:
I did not work with Hippo and did not know him on a daily basis as a lot of his friends did. I meet Hippo for the first time a couple of years ago. My best friend was having surgery and Hippo stopped by to check on him several times a day since they worked together. Hippo went out of his way on the day of the surgery to stop by to make sure I understood what the doctors had told to me and came by the room each day and brought me something to eat. His kindness touched me and made me realize when I got the call that he was sick and then had passed away that this world had lost a wonderful person. He touched my life in a way that I will never forget. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you during your time of loss.

Crawley Family, We both have great memories of seeing Hippo daily at the Medical Center, and I have a very sweet memory of him when my Mike was having a cath, and Hippo was with me for a while. He was so empathetic and kind, and knew that at that time that I was a wife and not a 'nurse', and I will always love him for that kindness. Our sympathy is with you and your family. He was one of the greatest.,..

As you can tell Hippo was a loved man by both friends and coworkers. I met Hippo many years ago and considered him a true friend. As a fellow Paramedic we often crossed paths. Some of my most fond memories will be of him trying to get me to always bring him some peperoni bread. To the family I will keep you in my prayers during this most difficult time. Just know through all the pain and sorrow we will all be together again someday!
May God guide and keep you always.
To Hippo we will meet again hubba-bubba!

Hippo made such an impact on every life he came in contact with. He had such compassion for all mankind. I will miss my phone calls from over the weekend to post cases always beginning with "Precious, I have another one for you". We had many of morning talks over his large bowl of cheese grits, scrambled eggs with 5 packs of ketchup and black pepper, I'll always remember as he would put it "get me my usual". Thanks for all the wonderful memories and the love you showed to me for Hippo definately was the definition of what a true friend is. To the Crawley family, thank you for sharing your precious husband, father, father-in-law, brother and grandfather with us for he spoke of all of you often with numerous stories from the past to the present. Hippo will be greatly missed and noone will ever fill his shoes in my heart.

I was able to have the "HIPPO" experience as a Paramedic in EMS at the Med. Hippo was riding with Marable at the time and I really enjoyed their "war" stories of calls they ran together in Macon. Sara, Will , and Charles,
It has been a very sad 2 weeks watching my good friend Hippo go through what he did. He fought a good fight till the end. You know how much we cared for each other and we both helped each other through our heart disease. He was the most caring man with the most pleasant disposition I have ever met. It was my great pleasure and honor to work with such a fine nurse who took pride in helping patients and also the many friends he has. I will miss my friend every day and will always see things at the med that he in some way touched and made better, myself being the first. Rest well my friend, you turly deserve it.

To Hippo, AKA (Pops). You could alway count on Hippo saying good morning "nurse" Or if he wanted to say something to you, you were always addressed "Hey Nurse" let me tell you something. I will truly miss my friend, my co-worker. Hippo was truly a man who enjoyed life, enjoyed and loved his work and loved his family and his work family. I will always treasure the fun we had together in the EC, the laughs, the jokes and most of all, the talks. Hippo would give you the shirt of his back if you needed it. To the family of Hippo; I pray God's
blessing upon you all. A writer, Thomas Hughes, once said"Blessed are they who have the gift of making friends, for it is one of God's best gifts. It involves many things, but, above all, the power of going out of one's self, and appreciating whatever is noble and loving in another." I feel blessed to have known Hippo as a co-worker and friend. He was truly an asset to the mission of the Medical Center as a hospital that cares.

I have the privledge of working with Hippo in Chest Pain Center. He was a joy and we also had something very special in common...we are twins! I loved him dearly and he will be missed!

To Sara and family - I was lucky enough to have worked with Mike at Middle Ga. Urgent Care. He was a fantastic nurse and coworker. Mike had a great sense of humor which made it a pleasure to come to work. He will be greatly missed. You all will be in my prayers. God bless you.

I am so very sorry for your loss or should I say our loss. Mike was a big part of my life when we were growing up. When you lived in Reynolds everyone was a big part of your life. God Bless each of you during this time of sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mrs. Sara,
I am so sorry about your loss. The Medical Center will just not be the same without Hippo. We had some good times with him in the Chest Pain Center and also going out to eat with the two of y'all. My prayers are with you through this difficult time.

We are sadden by your loss. Mike was great guy. And he will be missed by all. He was always a familiar face to those from Taylor County, when they were admitted into the Medical Center. You and your family will be in our prayers and our thoughts..

MIDDLE GEORGIA LOST A LEGEND YESTERDAY. HIPPO DID MORE FOR OTHERS IN ONE DAY THAN MOST PEOPLE DO FOR OTHERS IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFETIMES. HE WAS LOVED BY MANY AND WILL BE MISSED BY MANY, INCLUDING ME. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL.

Sorry for the loss, he is someone who will be missed greatly. I met Hippo 8 years ago, when I started at the Med.

TO SARA AND FAMILY: I CAN'T BELIEVE MY BEST GUY PAL IS GONE! HE WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF THE MOST CARING, COMPASSIONATE, AND UNDERSTANDING NURSES I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING AND WORKING WITH. HIPPO WAS WITTY AND HUMEROUS, YET, VERY INTELLIGENT CONCERNING HIS JOB. THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT COULD TELL A HIPPO STORY, THAT A BOOK COULD BE WRITTEN. HE WAS A GENTLE GIANT WITH A HEART BIGGER THAN STONE MOUNTAIN, WOULD GIVE YOU HIS LAST PENNY AND NEVER SAY A WORD ABOUT IT. THERE ARE SO MANY OF HIS FAMILY, FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS THAT ARE GRIEVING TODAY BECAUSE OF OUR LOSS, BUT THIS IS A BETTER WORLD BECAUSE OF THIS WONDERFUL MAN THAT IS SO LOVED AND SO MISSED. WE WILL NEVER FORGET HIS USUAL GREETING OF "NURSE" WHEN HE WOULD SEE ONE OF US OR HIS HABIT OF PUSHING HIS GLASSES BACK WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO TELL US A JOKE. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER GUY LIKE HIPPO TO US BECAUSE HE WAS AN ORIGINAL, GENUINE, SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN WHO WAS LOVED BY MANY, MANY PEOPLE. YOU FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT, MY FRIEND, A FIGHT THAT YOU WON BUT WE LOSS. OUR WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF YOU WILL CARRY US THRU THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND HELP REDUCE THE HEARTBREAK OF OUR LOSS. THANK YOU TO THE FAMILY FOR BRINGING HIPPO BACK TO MACON SO WE COULD ALL SAY OUR GOOD-BYES. IN MY CASE, NOT GOOD-BYE, BUT SEE YOU LATER, HIPPO. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.

I always thought of Hippo as a person that was friends with everyone. He never met a stranger. His desire to help others he came in contact with in his life was very evident in the past two weeks. The out pouring of friends and co workers leaves no doubt that Hippo was a friend and person that you could always count on. I will greatly miss this gentle giant.
