Eleanor Bennett Obituary

Eleanor Chloe Bennett, 86 SCARBOROUGH -- Eleanor Chloe Bennett, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Pine Point Health Care in Scarborough. Eleanor was born in Harrison, on April 23, 1922, the daughter of Everett and Gladys Kimball Chapman. She was the fifth of seven children. She attended the Bridgton Academy, founded by the Kimball family, class of 1940. Eleanor married Roger A. Bennett on April 12, 1939; they resided in Harrison, while Roger worked in her father's business, Chapman's Express. During WWII, Roger served in the Army, at Camp Gordon Johnson, Fla. where Eleanor worked in the Army Civilian Food Service, becoming the cafeteria manager. After the war, Eleanor settled in Scarborough, becoming active in the community. She was a Girl Scout leader, member of the Scarborough Fire Department Canteen, Engine 1 Ladies Auxiliary, Cub Scout Leader, Sunday School Superintendent at Black Point Congregational Church, and the Scarborough Youth Canteen. Eleanor held many other jobs during her lifetime. She cleaned cottages and houses in Prout's Neck and Higgins Beach, worked at Maine Egg Producers, Sullivan Photo, Inness Photo, Bicknell Photo, and Konica Photo. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star, and was Worthy Matron of Longfellow Chapter South Portland. She was one of the founding members of Alger Chapter OES, in Scarborough, where she also served as Worthy Matron. Eleanor enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, cooking, knitting and genealogy. She loved going to the family camp in Porter, especially with her two grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time in Bridgton and Harrison visiting family and friends. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Roger A. Bennett Jr. Oct. 6, 2006. Her son, Steven, daughter in-law Christine; a granddaughter Stephanie and her husband Joshua, and a grandson Nathan survive her. The family wishes to thank Nancy at Countryside Family Adult Care, the staff at Pine Point Health Care and Beacon Hospice for the care and support they provided for both Eleanor and her family members. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., Portland. Steve & family: Sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. We always had a great time together at Bicknell's. I can remember her faithfulness to her can of tuna at lunch time -- everyday! She was a hard working person but ever so faithful to her family. We are sure she will be greatly missed.
