Not often do we see such an outpouring of love for a single person. Anne Whitney told me the news today by email, and it is really interesting to review Pat's life from so many perspectives. I have had a wish to hold a party at the Center Lovell hall, with Pat and Gary Searles as the main event, and I would MC. Life does pass quickly, I lost a daughter, Jessamyn, in 2000, but she is still with me, as are all friends and family who have moved on. Sounds like a call to all of us on this page to recall the writings, songs, and there must be some photos out there to post. Ya think we could get Ronnie Shaw out here to do a musical tribute to Pat, and all of his friends. I'll do the Lovell thing if appropriate, but let's get some photos please.

I first met Pat in the mid sixties as one of my main rivals skiing in high school. I went to Deering High and we raced against Pat at Pleasant Mt. and the hill behind Fryburg Academy. I have many memories of our heated races. I would bump into Pat once in awhile at his office in downtown Portland, and we would talk about the old days. You have my deepest sympathy during these difficult times. He was a great guy.

I am sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do, please let me know.
I will remember Pat as a energenic, smiling person. When I was young he was Josh and Kerry's cool dad. I was in awe when he fixed or built things. I would often hear him playing his guitar, the soft chords drifting in the summer air. I remember when Anna and Connor were born.My sister and I would babysit them. Now they are all grown up. How time goes fast.
Pat helped my brother after a tragic fall. I have always been grateful for his help. I don't think he realized how much that meant to me and my family. Pat was a great person. I will miss him, his sparkling eyes and his smile.

Dear MaryAnne,
My thoughts and prayers went out to you when I heard about the passing of Pat. I can't imagine how hard it must be for you and your family.
My memories of Pat from Bridgton and Pleasant Mountain will always be of him skiing. He was a great skier with great style and a huge smile plastered on his face. What a cutie.
We will all miss seeing him on the slopes.

I knew Pat Cushman because he wrote fine stories. He wrote of cowboys, rope swings, sawdust, and arm wrestling. He wrote about a world I
understood.
And I saw him in his real world. The world he created with a woman he loved and children he cherished. I will miss him. I will miss just the possibility of being able to hear his voice or catch his smile from his big green truck. He made a difference in the world. He knew how to tell a story and how to live one as well.

I knew Pat mostly form the Nordic ski community. He was always smiling and the two of us had a really funny episode during the Great Glen to Bretton Woods Race. He had fallen on a really tricky tight corner of the race course and I was the next to come upon him. I had to jump over him because stopping was not an option. I cleared him without a problem and as he got to his feet he yelled at me with encouragement. Within a kilometer he had passed me to finish the race with a great time as I remember. A great skier and a great man.

I'm sad to learn of Pats passing. Such a sweet soul, he will be missed by many. I last saw Pat in the Bridgton Hosp. as his Mother was in her final illness. He was a brave and gentle person. I will be praying for the Cushman family.

Pat and would occasionally ride bikes together. Two mid-fifty aged men, riding expensive two wheeled, self-propelled machines. It could be on a group bike club ride, or on three occasions during an organized Century ride [100 mile bike ride]. Those three century rides were held at the end of September and were known as the Loon Echo Century; a hundred mile ride that goes up and down the White Mountains and hills of western Maine.
One of those Loon Echo century rides sticks out, and that ride resulted in us finishing a ride well below the century mark. During the 2006 Loon Echo ride Pat and I conspired/convinced a group of nine riders to turn back in the heavy rain at the Waterford stop. We turned, the nine of us, and stopped and shared coffee and food at a Bridgton café, leaving gallons of water on the floor of that café. I distinctly recall the fun I had with Pat on that wet ride back to the Shawnee Peak park lot. Finishing up with 45 plus miles, sopping wet, realizing that a wet ride was enough, we convinced each other that we didn’t need the 100 miles, in the rain: that we were smarter riders, and wasn’t that what is all about, riding smart. During that ride, and during many other rides, Pat was always game for fun, exertion, and always held out a helping hand. Pat will be sorely missed by anyone who had the privilege of sharing a bike ride with him, or, I’m certain, a life with him.

I am very sad to hear about Patrick. I knew Pat via his sons and his involvement with the Portland Velo Club. He was always an enthusiastic supporter of the club and his 2 sons. Especially supportive of Conner, when he got into cycling and I got a chance to coach him. Pat always was out there on the roads even in rainy weather and had a thirst for life. He will surely be missed by all of us including myself.
I wish Conner and Josh the best and hope they can work through this trying time.

Connor and Family, You have my deepest sympathy and condolences. Pat always inspired me, by watching his ability to fit biking and ski training into his busy schedule and full life. His ability to find time to coach and mentor others was amazing. I will remember him as someone to emulate.

When we moved to Maine in the fall of 1988, Beth and I had a 3 year old son, Colin, and another, Merritt due the next spring. I was starting a new carreer, and we were trying to find affordable house so we might survive on one income while the kids were young. We had no idea at the time how fortunate we were to locate next to the Cushmans. The whole block was full of kids and regular gatherings were the norm. Pat always brought a spark to our picnics, a story around the fire, or a song. His energy was infectious. He could play all of the old rock and roll standards, like House of the Rising Sun, but he could also take Gloria and compose a new lyric on the fly, in honor of our friend Bill’s birthday. I still don’t know how he manage to substitue “B-I-L-L...” for “G-L-O-R-I-A, Gloria!”, but he did. Kids and adults alike were in awe. What a great, creative, loving, guy he was. Our family has benefited in countless ways from the gift of Pat Cushman- from the ride to school when our car wouldn’t start, to the offer of Pat’s basement ski waxing service. Thank you so much, Pat. God Speed. Our love and prayers are with you, your wonderful family and the many people you touched, who feel your absence so deeply. Be at peace...

I knew Pat from cycling as he would periodically join one of CCCP's weekly club rides and from riding with him several years in the Loon Echo Bike Trek. He was always one of those riders that I was happy to see show up because rides were always more fun, not to mention, funnier when he was along. He was always the guy still smiling when laboring up the long mountain passes..
He lived life to his fullest extent and I only hope that when my time comes I too will be in the middle of doing something I love like biking or skiing.
He will be sorely missed by all of us at the Community Cycling Club of Portland. Our deepest sympathies to the Cushman family.

I am a grand nephew to Guy & Fannie Cushman, so I guess that would have made Pat my 2nd cousin, or something like that, I can never get that straight. Pat was 13 years older than myself, but I do have some fond memories of him. One day we rode around in his VW bus, going from one junk yard to another looking for a steering gear for the bus. I don't remember if we ever found one, but we had lots of fun that day. I think I was only 12, or 13 years old at the time. I'll always remember thinking Pat was a cool dude! One time I was visiting Maine, and was leaving from the Portland airport with my dad, and his wife, Pat came to the airport with his guitar, and played right in the airport. (told ya he was cool!) Even though I have never met Joshua, I do remember when he was born, we saw Pat in San Jose at my Grandma Pat's house. I was very little at the time. Anyway, Pat will be greatly missed, as he was greatly loved by his whole family. My deepest sympathy for MaryAnn, Joshua, Kerry, Anna, Connor, Guy, and all the rest of Pat's family. Ski for eternity Pat Cushman!

I have often wondered just why we moved to Rangeley. I know now that perhaps the best part was getting to know you, Mary Ann, and Pat. His sheer brightness of personality will always be in our hearts and memories. We shall be ever so grateful for the time we spent in his presence. But not enough time. Maryann, you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

My fondest memory of Pat was when we would get together, usually on a Saturday night, and play our guitars and sing. On many occassions we would sit around a campfire or get together at somebody's house and play music. Pat had the kind of personality that you had to like. He was a free spirit, he loved music, he loved skiing and the outdoors. I've seen him ski and he was an excellent skier. I knew his mother and father well. He touched many hearts and he will be missed. If there is snow in Heaven, Pat will be skiing.

When one hears the news that someone you know has passed on time stops and reflections take over. Ones own life and mortality comes into question. Pat lived life to the fullest and whenever our paths crossed he would always show warmth, compassion, and understanding. His wonderful smile and sense of humor is something we will always remember. The shock of hearing that Pat died is still very real. He was a special cousin to me since childhood. We shared many good times, lots of laughs and pleanty of fun. He was a ball of energy, a natural athlete, very intelligent, kind, caring and very loving. All who were lucky enough to know him should feel very blessed. He was one of a kind. To Maryann and her children, I hope you stay strong and keep Pats love close to you...always!
Much love to all of you,

I have been thinking a lot about Pat since I heard the news of his death. It is an incalculable loss for us all.
I remember coming upon Pat once parked in his truck on the Eastern Prom, a copy book propped against the steering wheel. He was writing because he was a writer and a superb writer. He brought many heartfelt characters into the world and his world was generous and compassionate. He was a brave writer and not afraid to enter into both the dark and light of life. I'll miss him.

The weather today in Colorado seems fitting of my mood as I sit and reflect over the passing of my Uncle. It is cold and snowing and the everyday to do list has been pushed aside. There is a great sadness in my heart of the passing of my Uncle Pat and for the loss and pain his family and friends are feeling. I can recall the first time I met my Uncle, I was just a child but he had this long great curly head of hair, he always had this great smile. Over the years growing up, he became to me the free spirit of the family. I remember the wedding day to MaryAnn, when they were together you knew they just fit and this is what love should be about. I remember sitting on porch one summer afternoon and Pat started playing the guitar and singing One of These Nights. Pat was one of those people that you just wanted to be around to have in the room, there was such a great sense of clam and peace and love about him. Although I did not stay in touch as much as I should have, as life has a way of pulling us in different directions and time slips all to quickly, his passing has stopped me in my tracks and the blessing is to take hold, to offer more compassion to those in need, and to keep my family close. To his family, my love and sorrow go out to you on this cold and snowy day. I wish I could be at the service, but even though I can't I am going turn the lights low, light the fire, and play One of These Nights. ....rest in peace Pat.

My deepest sympathy to Pat's family. Pat's leadership with the Portland Ski Club greatly benefited many Portland youths. He was a talented athlete, but more importantly, a warm and inspiring man who had knack for teaching skiing to others. I am very grateful that my sons had the benefit of having a role model like Pat in their life. He will be sadly missed, but forever remembered.

Pat Cushman was not a good man, he was a great man. He always had a smile and a story or a well thought out question, and he always wanted to chat about his kids or his camp in Rangeley. This is a tragedy beyond words, and my deepest sympathies and prayers go to his family. The world has lost a phenomenal human being with the loss of Pat.
