Amos Abplanalp, the father of 13-year-old “America’s Got Talent” finalist Evie Clair, died Thursday surrounded by family, his wife Hillary reported on the family’s blog.
Abplanalp had been battling colon cancer for more than a year.
“We watched him take his last breaths as he continued to breathe for about 15 minutes on his own,” Hillary Mann Abplanalp wrote. “The children burst into tears but are now at home laughing at old home movies of daddy and remembering our great love for the most wonderful man any of us have ever known.”
Amos Abplanalp was a bishop with an Arizona ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Deseret News reported.
His death comes just two days after his daughter Evie became one of five acts advancing to the finals of “America’s Got Talent,” following a popular vote that Parade magazine reported as the largest in the show’s history.
Evie captured the hearts of viewers at her audition in June, when she dedicated her moving performance of Christina Perri’s song “Arms” to her father. “When my dad is having rough days, I go up to his room and I sing him this song to help him feel better and give him comfort and strength,” she told “America’s Got Talent” judge Simon Cowell. “They gave him a five percent chance to live, and he continued working and supporting our family, so tonight I’m here to sing for him.”
Hillary has been documenting the family’s journey on their Team Amos blog since April 2016. There is a GoFundMe linked there for those who would like to support the family.
