Keith Mitchell

Keith Mitchell, the longtime drummer for the dream pop band Mazzy Star, died Sunday, May 14, 2017.

The band members announced Mitchell’s death Monday on their Facebook page:

“Our hearts are broken. We have lost the much beloved Keith Mitchell, a very talented and amazing drummer that we have had the privilege to work with for many years, he will live in all of our hearts forever... We'll miss you Big Fella.”

Mitchell joined the band Opal, which included guitarist David Roback and the bassist-vocalist Kendra Smith. The band was part of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. When Smith left Opal, Hope Sandoval joined the band as the lead vocalist. The new duo renamed themselves Mazzy Star in 1989.

In 2013, the band reunited after 17 years to release the album “Season of Your Day.”
