Preschooler Saved Drowning Friend

Xander Vento (Photo courtesy of Dignity Memorial)Xander Kahle Vento, age 4, did a remarkable and selfless thing on August 6th – when he saw a 3-year-old friend struggling in the water, he jumped into a community swimming pool and got under her to hold her above water. His heroic actions that day saved her life. Sadly, Xander took in a large amount of water while saving her. His family made the extremely difficult decision to remove him from life support four days later.

It is no surprise to us that Xander received a medal for being the “Most Loving” student in his preschool. As his mother writes in his obituary in the Dallas Morning News, “This child was never afraid of receiving or giving love and affection. As parents we are so proud to have taught him the importance of affection and showing people that you love and care for them. We believe that is why he did what he did on that day.”

A hero in both life and death, his family chose to donate Xander’s organs to save even more lives. Friends of the family have created a site through which people can make donations to assist the family with medical and funeral expenses. It is clear from the large number of donations ($74,000+ at the time of this writing), that young Xander’s story has touched others as much as it has touched us.

Thank you, Xander, for teaching us that heroes come in all shapes, sizes and ages.
