Lee Allen Shauer was born Aug. 30, 1958, in Alexandria, Minn., to Robert and Mildred Shauer.
As a boy in Minnesota, he grew up hunting and fishing, going to his favorite duck pond before school. He graduated from Hoffman High School and attended Alexandria Technical College.
Lee moved to Seward in 1981 and spent many great times with friends hunting for caribou and Dall sheep in the mountains and fishing throughout the state. For 11 years he lived in a small cabin in Ester.
He started working for Big State Logistics hauling fuel and entered a new phase of his life. After a long separation his boys, Lucas and Marcus, came to live with him. He purchased a new home in Fairbanks and in December 2005 he married Star Davis.Â
Lee worked hard and played hard. He was a skilled gardener well known for his green thumb, greenhouse tomatoes, vegetables and squash, and the potatoes that he skillfully crafted into homemade lefse. He loved his Harley and eagerly awaited summer pavement. His sense of humor, warm heart, kindness and generosity endeared him to many. His unexpected death on Sunday, May 10, 2009, has saddened many whose lives were touched by him. He will be missed.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mildred Shauer; grandparents; and special grandfather, Martin Peterson; uncle, Clifford Peterson; and his dog, Gus.
He is survived by his wife, Star Davis; his sons, Marcus and Lucas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Don Simmons, Roberta and Dennis Kennedy, Carol and Paul Sanderson and Corrie and Nick Seekatz; his stepmother, Adeline Shauer; nephew, Raif Kennedy; and a number of other nephews and a niece.
A memorial service will be hosted at 4 p.m., today at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fairbanks, 4448 Pikes Landing Road.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Lee Shauer memorial fund at Northrim Bank.Â
Arrangements were by Northern Lights Mortuary.

Lee grew up with four sisters, 3 older and one younger. When the last sister, Corrie, was born Lee cried and said, "Not another dumb sister!" Today, Lee's Minnesota sisters, Carol and Karen had a informal memorial service at Lands Cemetery in Hoffman. Lee's grandparents, Esther and Theodore, and his parents, Mildred and Robert are buried there. We read several bible verses, prayed the Lord's prayer, and prayed for comfort and peace for our grieving family. When Lee was a little boy, our Mom taught him the words to a hymn, Son of My Soul. Lee would be asked and then bribed to sing the first verse of this hymn, accompanied on the piano by a sister. Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear, It is not night if Thou be near; Oh may no earth-born cloud arise to hide Thee from thy servant's eyes! We ended our service with this song and then spread Lee's ashes on the graves of his Mom and Dad. A memorial stone will be placed at the cemetery.

Lee and I spent a lot of time together while attending Hoffman High school. I will always remember our spirited debates, hanging out at Elk Lake, late night campfires with friends, but most of all I will remember his absolute friendship. Godspeed Lee.

Many memories I have of Lee and his family. Lots of laughs and good times and being able to share in the birth of his 2 sons with him and his wife was a special experience. I will miss running into him at Fred Meyers and catching up on life. My love always to Marcus, Lucas and Birdie.

Lee and I shared a bond that was deeper than brother and sister. We were so very close throughout the joys and sadnesses of our Minnesota youth and the joys and sorrows that we shared together in Alaska. We were always proud to have been the first Minnesota "adventurers" to come to the North. And we were happy when Corrie joined us.
Thank you to the many friends and family that spoke at Lee's service. It was wonderful to hear your stories and I wanted you to keep coming forward to talk more about our brother.
To our Minnesota family, we will forever love and hold Lee close in our hearts. Trust in knowing that this terrible sorrow will slowly leave us and will someday be filled with warm memories
of our beloved father, husband, brother, step-son and friend.
The birds are singing a chorus in his honor this early morning with the Canadian geese that Lee loved, picking up the bass.
Lee will be forever loved and missed and someday he and I will wrap our arms around each other again in heaven. I love you, my dear brother.

To Lee's Family,
I was Lee's brother-in-law and friend. We used to spend a lot of time together as a family. One of my best memories of Lee was having Lee come up to my Mom's house. My Mom made her fried chicken dinner and Lee made lefse. Mom loved it so much she bought Lee a lefse grill and turner and gave him an open invitation to return at any time. Now it's sad that both of them are gone, and I miss them both but I live with the belief that I will see them both again sometime and somewhere down the road...or trail.

I was Lee's buddy and roommate at UAF. Lee always had your back and knew just what to do or say to make you feel better. He was a dedicated father, scholar, gentleman, expert pool player, expert gardener, marksman, craftsman and comedian.
I learned a lot from Lee and think about him often (especially when I hear Steely Dan).
Lee I miss you man.

Love of Lee
Lee and I shared many loves:
The love of his four sisters and two children, the love of gardening and raising poultry. Catch and release and catch and keep fishing.
The love of a glass of good whiskey and a heated political debate. The amazing beauty of Alaska, its clean water and wild life.
Lee's remains will be spread in one of the arctic streams Lee loved to fish and when my time on this earth is over I can't wait to join him.
Love you Lee

Corrie, Karen, Birdie, Carol and Adeline:
I am so sorry for your loss!
In all of the time that I spent at your house in our years of growing up, I rarely heard Lee talk. But I remember that when he did say something, he was usually teasing Corrie.
I know you will miss him! You are all in my thoughts and prayers!
