God Bless, You, Fr. Daniel Berrigan, and Rest in Peace with Jesus Christ the Lord: who's message is the Victory! Along with God the Father, and in Communion with the Holy Spirit. Along with all are His own, amen. As you have always said, "What is truly heroic is not the individual; it is the community."

Daniel Berrigan was and always will be an inspiration. It was a privilege to hear him speak and to have the chance to meet him as a college student at a Jesuit school. His life bore witness to the heart and soul of who Jesus is.
He epitomized the motto of the Jesuit community he loved so dearly. He lived life 'for the greater glory of God'
Well done and thank you, Father Berrigan, good and faithful servant.
May you rest in peace!

To each member of the Berrigan Family,
I was attending Mass last Sunday in the Chapel of Fordham University, Lincoln Center Campus in New York City when the priest said that Father Daniel Berrigan had died. I immediately put my hands over my face and said: "Oh no!" I was very upset. Father Berrigan was a peace activist when I was young. He lived what he believed. He had a powerful impact on me because I too was Catholic and continually protesting publicly against the Vietnam War. I became a lifelong peacekeeper. For 6 years I publicly protested in front of Rockefeller Center against the War in Iraq with Grandmothers Against the War. There were very few people with us publicly raising their voices against the war.
It's not easy to stand up publicly for what you believe. Father Berrigan did that with devotion. He took peacekeeping seriously. I honor this sacred priest who effected me and many others. His life was a powerful example of living close to the Lord but also living in the real world.
I hope that you'll find comfort in the fact that on last Sunday at the Fordham Mass, the students prayed for Daniel. He was cherished.
With All of My Moral Support,
Patricia McHugh

Our thoughts and prayers are with you these days. It takes courage to stand up for what you believe, and he was a good example of what it was to put your faith into practice.

Inside the beast with you
There's breathing room
inside the belly of the beast
because of you, having
left an opening and
given voice to the idea
that sound travels far
in water, through bone
the beast leaking love
from the opening, taking on
water and, of course,
more passengers floundering
or fabricating rafts but
not the shore, it's
in the distance, inside
the beast, inside the puppet with you
it all seems so reachable.

Like Daniel Berrigan, we yearn for the time spoken at Isaiah 2:4, "They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they will they learn war anymore." In loving memory of Daniel Berrigan!

He was our Professor chez Woodstock Seminary, [maybe in 'G-dbox", N.Y.C.. He was oft polite to me, when I happened to see him in some other environments. Once. he recited a poem to me, near Milbank Hall ! Maybe, he regretted a snippy comment re Women, later. Oh, the elevator emergency episode in a U.T.S. residence ! His brother Phillip, & P.'s wife were in the hallway. 7 Months of demolition/construction, & Bolivian Spanish language, next to my current abode; i.e., haven't had QUIET enough to write to Daniel, while he was alive. I'd difficulty finding his address @ 2015. Also, saw a Culpepper in "The trial of the Catonsville 9".

I was fortunate, when I was introduced to Dan by our mutual friend William F. Stringfellow. On the late '60s. while Dan was at Cornell University I visited him I we talked about the issues we were facing opposing the war in Vietnam and the poverty conditions of the poor. Dan was also a prolific cook. Both at Cornell and when we visited William Stringfellow an Anthony Town, a poety too. (Eschaton) in Block Island we share their culinary art as well as our conversation. Dan thank for allowing me to be your friend. RIP.

I appreciate learning about people who strive hard to encourage peace among all people. This is what I am learning about your loved one.
We live at a time when peace and unity are getting even wider by the day. May the family of Daniel Berrigan be comforted by the grace of God and by the love and support that you are receiving by many well-wishers.

He was a gifted man, teacher and artist. An inspirational man throughout his life who certainly along with the other Jesuits I knew greatly and permanently enriched my life.
I had the privilege to be one of his students at LeMoyne College. I will always remember his indignation when he was told a statue of the Madonna he had made looked pregnant. He said, "She's supposed to!" A man of conscience, he will surely be welcomed home; well done, thy good and faithful servant.

I was 18 when I met Daniel in 1969. I was in DC protesting the war. He hugged me and thanked me. I rolled out my sleeping bag on his basement floor and wiped away the pepper gas. What a gift of kindness and courage he gave me. From that day, I wanted to be as courageous as Daniel Berrigan.
Be courageous, be proud of your kindness. Be as relentless as Daniel.

Dan traveled with me to the North of Ireland twice, championed the rights of Irish republican prisoners and those who suffered under British rule there. Eventually, he performed the wedding for Annie and me in Brooklyn. We loved him, and now he has gone to meet Our Lord.
When I first called him and asked if he could help us in our struggle to get better conditions for Irish prisoners in British jails, he said, "Of course. I have been waiting for your call," although he had never met me or spoken to me before. He (and his two brothers) proceeded to help for a long time. It was more proof to me that faith always negates supposed "coincidence." No coincidence, Dan, that I thought of you yesterday. May Our Lord embrace you, forgive your sins and bring you into the home all of us long for.
Requiescat en pace, Father Dan!

In the late 1960's, a friend of mine - Bill Spear & I drove from S.I.U. to Syracuse N.Y. and went to the home of Daniel Berrigan. It is truly an honor & blessing to hope & pray for what humanity could be, a trait, that set Daniel apart from the crowd. My deepest sympathy to the family.

Dan was thoughtful, caring, and generous; more than a mentor to those who encountered him. A Pastor, who led and nurtured, comforted and inspired, he remained supremely humble, and always, always kind and insightful. He was 'mindful' before Buddhism became popular; he was a 'priest' who led his Bishops. But his personal generosity in thousands of quiet gestures was remarkable and I am forever grateful to have known him.

He was a friend and spiritual advisor to my parents. He baptized me. We shared letters over the years, and he critiqued my writings I would send to him. So much of my world has been shaped by who he was. He taught me the true meaning of hope... In the face of impossibility. Hope is what remains when all other lights go out. <3
