Mary was an inspiration to everyone who knew her but especially my dad, Burl Hays. When he retired, he started walking at the track in Fairfield. He was pleasantly surprised to find that Mary, a long time friend of the family, also walked on a daily basis in the "wee" hours of the morning. Then a third walker came along, Lucille, and they fast became the "Three Walking Musketeers". They watched out for each other. As time went on,phone calls were made when someone wasn't going to show up to walk. The three developed a great friendship. When Mary had to give up walking at the track,Lucille and Dad continued but greatly missed her. Dad would call and keep her updated on the "goings-on" at the track. Mom and Dad visited Mary about two weeks before she passed. She was her upbeat self and they joked and laughed the afternoon away. Dad and Lucille will continue to walk knowing that their "friend" will be watching out for them from above. So, on behalf of Lucille and the Burl Hays Family, the entire Bowermaster Family is in our prayers. Mary will live on in our hearts.

I knew Mary when I first started playing tennis at Riverside Racquet Club. I was her partner in the inter-club tennis. She was a very good tennis player and friend. I just heard she passed away and we all will miss such a wonderful person.

At the passing of the last surviving relative of my Mom & Dad's generation, I share a few reflections about Aunt Mary. She was an authentic human being and one of the kindest persons I have ever known. As I was growing up, especially in my teen years, she often bolstered my saging self-esteen. Whether it was coming in first in a spelling bee, or winning the American Legion essay contest, she hugged me and told me how proud she was. Uncle Don did the same.
My fondest memory of Aunt Mary was her wonderful knack of making me and my brothers & sisters feel good about ourselves.
While I was enormously proud of her and her amazing athletic acheivements, it was her genuine love and caring for family that I will most remember and cherish.
I love you, Aunt Mary, and thank you for making this a better and happier world while you were here.
