FRED DEMMAN Obituary

Fred Demman 1924 ~ 2011 Fred DeVuono Demman, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and local businessman, age 86, passed away peacefully on February 15th, 2011. Born November 10, 1924 in Sunnyside, Utah to Fedele (Fred) DeVuono and Costanza Mascaro DeVuono. Married to Donna Jean Reid October 16, 1948, in Evanston Wyoming, together having two children. After moving with his family from Sunnyside to the Salt Lake City Avenues at the age of nine, he graduated from East High where he made the All City Football Team for three years. Dad was proud of his Italian heritage - but even more of his family. There was an incredible bond between he and his many siblings which lasted a lifetime. He went on to attend the U of U on a football scholarship until being drafted in 1943 to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. Dad proudly served his country spending most of his tour of duty in France and Germany. His patriotism and love of country was solidified and he never took for granted the freedoms and opportunities he fought for and enjoyed. After returning from Europe in 1946, he worked for the U.S. Post Office. He aspired to become a self-employed businessman and soon after, along with his brother Albert, opened and operated the Demman Brothers Milk Depot and Soda Fountain located on the corner of 800 W and 1st North. There he also met his future wife and companion of 62 years, Donna. In 1957 the brothers built, opened and operated Demman's Motel and Café. Other business endeavors included the Putter Club, Demman's Par Three Golf Course and Driving Range and the KOA Campground. Upon selling his business interests in 1975 at age 51, he became a licensed realtor and enjoyed selling real estate and assisting low income families until his retirement in 1996. Dad worked on JFK's Utah campaign and later served as Chair of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party. He also ran for public office twice in 1968 and 1970, because he wanted to serve and make a difference. He served on the Utah State Fair Board in the 1960's, one term as Chair. Dad loved running his businesses, reading, sports, talking politics, telling stories, playing golf and making deals. Above all, he showed us the importance of love of family and this great country. He was also a devout member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Parish. Survived by his loving wife Donna, daughter Sharman, son Reid, sister Florence Barber and many brother and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Tony, John, Joe, Dominic, Sam, Frank, Louis, Albert and sister Rose. The family wishes to thank the care givers at the VA Hospital, Bristol Hospice, Woodland Park and Garden Terrace for their efforts and gentle care the final months of dad's life. Thanks Mom for your lifelong devotion and care of Dad which gave us all the gift of his extended life and happiness. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Dr. Family and friends may attend a vigil which will be held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday evening after which friends may visit from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Interment and military honors will be at the Holiday Memorial Cemetery, 4900 S. Memory Lane. (1950 E.)

Dear Reid,

I am so sorry for your loss. I never met your dad formally, but hearing you talk about him over the years, I know what a wonderful man he must have been. Again, thinking of you at this time.

Dear Demman Family, Fred was a great friend to my parents Don and Carolyn Griffee, who fought the political battles with him. Fred was also a great friend to me. Fred worked for me as a Real Estate agent for several years in the early 90's. I could always have a rousing great visit with a fellow Demiocrat. We also spoke the golf language. I loved Fred. I love you dear brother. I will miss you all the rest of my life. Till we meet again. Tell Sam hello for me and pray for us mortals down here. You were the best. Have no one to help me fight the Republicans anymore. May the Lord keep you in the palm of his hands. Your loving sister, Flo

As a new employee at Utah Power & Light Co., I was fortunate enough to enjoy the delicious sweet rolls that I believe to this day should have been known as "The Best on the Planet Earth Demman Sweet Rolls"! I remember meeting Fred and along with other power co. employees talking to him and enjoying a true friendship with him. To all of Fred's posterity, know that from someone on the outside, he was a truely great giant.

To describe this man and his friendships alone would take far more space than this obituary. I have counted Fred as a personal friend for half my life and so enjoyed his company. So many memories of conversations, advice, laughter. Working at the Fair, hundreds of meals at the motel. And sharing the newest joke over a cup of coffee...I thank you kind sir for your giving and the entire family for sharing him with us...it has been a marvelous trip.
