June Unger Obituary

Unger, June Mary DeBoer
M.D., age 79, passed away peacefully in Scottsdale, Arizona on March 19th with her husband and six children surrounding her. June was born on May 28, 1932 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her mother was Mary Elizabeth DeBoer and her father, Bokke DeBoer. June graduated from Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1949 and from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1953. While attending medical school at the Womens' Medical College of Pennsylvania, she met her husband, George Francis Unger II. George and June were married on June 22, 1957. June graduated from the Womens' Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1958. In 1959, June attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania in Radiology between 1959-1961. She was board certified in Radiology in 1962. George and June moved to Elm Grove, Wisconsin in 1962. From 1962-1985, June worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Milwaukee and was also Associate Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She later went into academic practice at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she was a Professor of Radiology from 1985-1995. June was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, President of the Milwaukee Roentgen Radiology Society, President of the Wisconsin Radiologic Society, and a member of MENSA. She was a published author and lectured nationally and internationally throughout her career. June had a passion for travel that she combined with her work and family life. She traveled to Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Tibet, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, and throughout Europe and the Americas. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was her ability to raise six children, maintain a successful medical career, and nurture her creativity. She was an artist who enjoyed painting, knitting, and sewing. June was a gourmet cook and her elegant meals were often the centerpiece of family holiday celebrations. She was a loving mother, role model and hero to her family. Her family will miss her sense of humor, guidance, and passion for life. June is survived by her husband, George Francis Unger II; their six children, George III, Daniel, Joan, Jeffrey, Suanne and Gregory; her grandchildren, George IV, Christopher, Amanda, Shane, Rachel, Teresa, Sidney, Skyler and Spencer. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23rd, immediately followed by a service at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary in Scottsdale, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation or Hospice of the Valley- Sherman Home (Phoenix) in memory of Dr. June Unger.

Dear Ungers

We send our thoughts and strength your way. It seems like just yesterday that we were kids in Elm Grove. Your Mom was a lovely woman...

Take care,

Dear Toosey (we never graduated from that nickname while I knew you), Chopper, Chip-tooth heater (jeff -I remember Chopper calling you that), George (the 15 yr old limo driver for all the ladies in the neighborhood), Dan and GJ;and of course Dr. Unger (the ultimate rose bush nurturer): I am so sorry about your mom and wife. I remember her being so kind and gentle. I didn't know what a terrific chef she was. Again my recollection goes back to only picturing Gamms in her bed-coat in the kitchen yelling "Goddamnit Geooooge!" Nonetheless, my memories of all of you are fond and I am so saddened by the news about your mom. You are all her living legacy and one I'm sure she found to be a source of pride and joy. God Bless you all. With love, Kim Cafaro Schlifske

Dr. June was the kindest most helpful person I have ever had the honor to work with. The world is a far poorer place today with out her.

I attended med school and residency at UW Madison from 87-94 and always was happy to find Dr Unger manning the light box when I went to the file room to review the team's films. She was so kind, elegant, brilliant and a wonderful instructor even or especially to a lowly med student and non radiologist.
My condolences on your family's very great loss. What a treasure, it seems her great medical skills paled in comparison to her artistic and personal accomplishments.
Sincerely,
Michele Tschopp, MD
