Ralph Houk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2010.
BOSTON (AP) — Ralph Houk, who guided the powerhouse New York Yankees of the early 1960s to two World Series championships during his 20 years as a big league manager, died Wednesday. He was 90.

Houk also skippered the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox in a managerial career that spanned three decades.

Red Sox spokesman Dick Bresciani said Houk's grandson, Scott Slaboden, told the team Houk died at his home in Winter Haven, Fla. Slaboden, who lives in the Boston area, wrote in an e-mail to the team that Houk "died peacefully of natural causes after having a brief illness."

Before reaching the big leagues with the Yankees in 1947, Houk served in the Army in World War II and rose to the rank of major — a moniker that stuck even when he returned to baseball.

Houk spent parts of eight seasons as a backup catcher for New York, appearing in just 91 games. Former Yankees shortstop Tony Kubek, who played for Houk in the minors and majors with New York, said Houk learned a lot about handling a pitching staff from working with Hall of Famer catchers Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey in the bullpen.

"He had the Yankees' spirit, the Yankees' winning attitude," Kubek told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "He had all the qualities that make a special manager."

Houk managed 3,157 games and won 1,619 with a winning percentage of .514. He followed Casey Stengel as Yankees manager in 1961 and was George Steinbrenner's first manager for New York in 1973. He resigned after one year working for the Boss and moved on to Detroit.

Houk managed the Tigers from 1974-78. His final stint in the dugout came with Boston from 1981-84.

"People forget that before he was a manager, he was a war hero and he was a catcher for a lot of years," Tigers radio analyst Jim Price said. "He was a great guy, I knew him very well, and everyone that played for him loved him."

It's been a tough couple of weeks for the Yankees organization, which has lost three notable figures from its storied history in the last 10 days. Longtime public address announcer Bob Sheppard died on July 11 and iconic owner Steinbrenner passed away two days later.

Houk's best seasons as a manager were his first three in New York. He took over the Yankees in 1961 and behind Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris the team won 109 games and a World Series championship.

The Yankees repeated as champions in 1962 and won the AL pennant in 1963, but were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

Houk managed a handful of Hall of Famers in New York, but Kubek said he was an integral part of the team's success.

"Sometimes when you have good players, you can mess it up and he didn't do that," he said. "He didn't overmanage. He was probably, more than a strategist, a handler of men."

Houk moved into the front office after the series loss to the Dodgers, serving as Yankees general manager in 1964 and '65. He returned to managing the Yankees in 1966 and held the job until 1973, but he only had four more winning seasons and never finished better than second place.

The Lawrence, Kan., native had only one winning season with the Tigers, his last in 1978.

"Ralph was a great baseball man who handled his players well and they played hard for him," Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline said in a statement released by the team. "He was well respected and a fun guy to be around. I enjoyed playing for him during my last year."

Houk came out of retirement at the age of 61 to become Red Sox manager. He had three winning seasons before retiring for good in 1984, leaving behind the core of a team that would reach the World Series in 1986.

"He was a great players' manager, a real good guy and a tough son of a gun," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "I got to know him after his managing days, and he's a great credit to the Yankees, Red Sox and Tigers organizations."

But he'll most be remembered as a Yankee.

"He was just a wonderful guy, loyal to his players," Kubek said. "The Major was just a great person."

Houk is survived by his daughter, Donna Houk Slaboden, his son Robert Houk and four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

All the baseball memories are there but many remember him helping the less strong in the awful cold of the 1945 German winter. Often under fire, the Major never paid much attention to incoming. He gave his clean socks and other gear to a lot of freezing GIs. He was a good man and a great soldier and those who served with him shall remember.

My heart goes out to the family of Ralph Houk. His name will stay with me forever as I remember so many years ago he came to Willimantic, CT as the guest speaker when my Dad received the "Sportsman of the Year" award. Mr. Houk presented my Dad with a baseball signed by the entire "Yankee" baseball team. I wish I could remember more, but I was too young, but I do remember how proud my Dad was to know Mr. Houk and how thrilled he was when he came to his award ceremony. I'm sure there was an article in the paper the next day about Ralph Houk being in Willimantic, but unfortunately, I don't have that. But...obviously Ralph touched many hearts throughout his years and for sure one of those was my Dad's! My sincere sympathy to all!

In the mid to late '70s, Ralph Houk helped develop the young corps of players (Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Lance Parrish, etc.) that would eventually win a World Series in 1984 under Sparky Anderson. As a Tiger fan, I'll always be grateful for Mr. Houk's fine tutelage of that young talent. Baseball lost one of it's greats. Rest in peace, Ralph Houk.

America has lost another member of our greatest generation. A war hero, tenacious ball player, great manager and great American. As a Red Sox fan, I will always remember the fine job that he did keeping a depleted roster very respectable in the standings and the deep respect all the players had for him. Good-bye Major!

I was deeply saddened and shocked in hearing the passing of, Ralph G. Houk.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting, Ralph, in 1988, when I was working with the Boston/Winter Haven Red Sox.

He was a man of enormous integrity, character, and courage. As a Major in the U.S. Army during WWII, Ralph was a true war hero. His dedication to service, leadership, and love of country exemplified his patriotism, strength, and fidelity.

As the Manager of the 1961 New York Yankees, they won a grueling pennant race, a stunning World Series victory-and the title "the greatest baseball team of all time." He later wrote a book, "Season of Glory" depicting an unforgettable portrait of that legendary team. He would later manage the Boston Red Sox for a brief time.

My deepest sympathy extends to his children, grand-children, and great grand-children. May God contiune to watch over, guide, and protect you at this most difficult time.

2 Tim. 4(7-8), "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."

May He rest in peace.

Ralph Houk was the first Yankee Manager I remember. He managed that very tough 61 team where he dealt with death threats on his players, and the media show that went with the race to 61 home runs. And he did it with grace and dignity winning 109 games and a World Series title along the way. To me he was a hero. Later on, as a baseball writer, I learned of his distinguished military career and his cool and calm in the dugout made sense. Now he joins that amazing group of Yankee Spirits and we are proud to have him. May he rest in peace.

I was so saddened to see that Ralph had died. My parents (Chester & June Lyon) became friends with your parents at Cypress Woods in Winter Haven and spent several years entertaining back and forth. My dad's birthday was on New Year's Eve and your parents usually had a party and celebrated and made a big deal out of his birthday. My dad was a grain farmer from the plains of Illinois, and I often wondered what they could have possibly had in common to forge the friendship that they did. I would say it was a testament to both fine men. Please accept my condolences.

To All of Ralph's Family,

I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this terribly sad time. Many years ago the Houks were my next door neighbors in Lakeland. They took a special interest in our very young sons and treated all of us to special box seats at the Tigers spring training games. Until her passing, your mother and I exchanged cards and notes and pictures. My sons, now 39 and 37, treasure the autographed balls and other things your parents sent them over the years. To us Ralph was just the very nice man who lived next door who never complained when he had to move the Big Wheel out of the way before he could put his car in his garage.

Although baseball has lost another legend, you have lost a beloved parent. I know your hearts are very heavy today but I pray that as time passes they will soon be filled with wonderful memories of all the happy times you spent together.

As a kid who could only afford to sit in the bleachers, it was time well spent. I hate to read the news more and more as the Icons slowly pass on. I am greatful to have been able to watch and have that time cast in stone in my memories. To have been able to touch so many people each and every day. That is such a gift. I almost feel that the Yankee's are all moving to a Newer Stadium where no more games will ever be rain out. If I able I will assume my place in those bleachers again.
