Randy Scruggs Obituary
He passed away after a brief illness.
Scruggs is the son of bluegrass music legend Earl Scruggs.
Scruggs won four Grammy awards for his instrumental work and was named the “Musician of the Year” at the Country Music Association Awards twice.

He was born in Nashville and was often in the company of country music legends growing up due to his father’s fame.
The guitarist contributed his talents to recordings by Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Wilco, Randy Travis and Vince Gill.
He produced albums for Waylon Jennings, Toby Keith, and Alison Krauss.
Also a talented songwriter, he wrote numerous hit songs including “We Danced Anyway” for Deana Carter and “Shakin’” for Sawyer Brown. He co-wrote multiple songs with artist Earl Thomas Conley when Conley had a string of hits in the eighties.
Scruggs produced and played guitar on the critically acclaimed Grammy-winning album “Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two” for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1989.
As a recording artist, Randy and his brother Gary released two albums in 1969 and 1970, and then formed the progressive country rock band the Earl Scruggs Revue with their father. “I Could Sure Use the Feeling” was a top 30 hit for the group in 1979.
Roseanne Cash paid tribute on Twitter, "So incredibly sad to hear of the death of my old friend Randy Scruggs. He was a brilliant musician and a sweet soul, and my first serious crush. My heart aches today."
Singer Lisa Loeb on Twitter, "Tonight I heard that Randy Scruggs had passed last night. I’m so sad. He was a friend and a collaborator who I loved working with. We had some unfinished songs. I’ll miss him."
He is survived by his wife Sandy, his daughter, Lindsey, and his brother, Gary.

Randy was a quiet, sorta shy guy who you hardly knew was there. . . . Until he picked up his guitar. He was one of my sister's crushes during high school. Gary was in my class. You should have seen him in his drum major outfit. I will always remember those two.

Always enjoyed Randy's music, guitar playing and really feel fortunate to have got to see the Scruggs Family with Earl live at The MACC Fest Hoover Y Park around 2003. His version of Both Sides Now is simply beautiful. Thanks for all of the wonderful music through the years and God Bless!

Wow just now im hearing of randys passing. My name is sue rowe, i worked at costco in Brentwood doing samples for 8 years. I never new he was so famous, he and his wife would come in and we always said hello how are you, we would be so casual, yet seemed like old friends. Wow, randy and is wife where so kind, so gental in there manner. So polite, and randy so shy, was refreshingly different. I moved to butler Indiana a few years ago, randy had wished me good luck and was glad to have known me. What a loving man. Bye randy again until we meet again in Gods glory. Randy, I've always admired your style of picking, and you always presented yourself with class and dignity while remaining humble in spite of your success and carrying the Scruggs name. A lot of folks may not realize your enormous contribution to music and the awards that you've deservingly won. My heart breaks at this sorrowful time just as it did when your father passed away. My deepest condolences to the Scruggs family.
I will never forget the first time I heard Randy play a beautiful instrumental version of "Both Sides Now" on one of the Earl Scruggs Revue albums. As a fan I soaked up the many contributions he made to projects by other artists. His session playing as well as producing ( Will the Circle Be Unbroken 2 among many others)
He was amazing as he played on almost every song during the tribute to Johnny Cash. His iconic playing on Roseanne's hit record, "Tennessee Flat Top Box" comes to mind as well.
I only knew him through his musical contributions to the world but I have read many comments from those who had the privilege to know him personally and all express a good hearted man that will be deeply missed. Rest In Peace, Randy. Thank you for touching lives with your amazing talent.

Randy was a sweet soul and a fantastic musician. I had the privilege of playing piano in the Revue in the early seventies got to know him on the road when he was still in his teens. He was always kind, quick to laugh and filled with enthusiasm for music. He left us too soon. Many blessings to his family.

Had alot a great times back in the 70s when Randy use to come down to Hampton Florida and hang out at the farm and the studio, have not seen him in years but i know i will see him again.praying for the family and especially Gary who has had to see his entire immediate family pass.But i know they have left him an eternity of GREAT memories.

We are saddened that Randy is not with us anymore. Even though we know that this is temporary we still are heartbroken. We ask that our creator give all who loved Randy the comfort and strength needed to help them through this very hard time. I am deeply saddened by the passing of one of the sweetest, most talented, grace filled, most family oriented, gentle souls I've ever met. I had the great honor of writing two songs with Randy. He was always a gentleman- and a soft spoken, quiet, lovely human being. My deepest condolences go out to Randy's family. God bless & rest his soul.

Grew up watching Beverly Hill Billies. Anytime I hear the name Scruggs, I think Earl and Rascal Flatts.
Ironically, my son and grands last names are Scruggs. Will always remember the Scruggs family.
